[ Solved ] Fix Error Apple Mobile Device Service Not Started

by Rohit Khurana on June 8, 2010

There are times when you connect your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to your windows based computer and a error message window pops up saying Apple Device Mobile Service as shown in the image below.

This could happen due to the stopping of important apple service which runs in background in windows and is required to be running so that the apple devices get recognized when they are connected.

Follow the procedure to fix this problem

For Windows Vista or Windows 7

  1. Close iTunes and disconnect the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  2. Click the Windows Start button .
  3. In the Start Search field type Services.
  4. In the Programs section of the search results, click Services.
  5. Right-click on Apple Mobile Device service and click Properties in the shortcut menu.
  6. Set the Startup type pop-up menu to Automatic and click OK.

For XP

  1. Close iTunes and disconnect the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  2. Click the Windows Start button.
  3. Go to Start >> Run and then type Services.msc and press Enter
  4. Right-click on Apple Mobile Device service and click Properties in the shortcut menu.
  5. Set the Startup type pop-up menu to Automatic and click OK.

Note: If the above service is already set to automatic, you just need to right click on the service name and then select start, so that service gets started if it is suspended for any reason.

We hope you like this simple tip to solve this problem which occurs while connecting apple devices, we had already shared some other iPhone, iPod Tips which you can consider reading.

Update on 14 Aug 2012: As it looks like from some user comments running a check disk on the drive where you have iTunes installed could fix this problem for you. Thanks John for this tip.

I’m a Windows Vista user. I have followed this procedure many times, and it always works. The problem is that I have had to do it many times. Every time, I change the app to start automatically (in the properties), and every time I reboot the computer, Apple Mobile Device service is off and the property has changed back from “automatic” to “manual.” I can’t find why it keeps changing back. Anyone?

Matthias November 18, 2010 at 4:30 pm

I’m on XP and I have the exact same issue as John. Every time, I change the app to start “Automatic”, but every time I reboot the computer, Apple Mobile Device service is off again and the property has changed back from “Automatic” to “Manual”.

John November 18, 2010 at 9:16 pm

I might have found an answer: a tech guy suggested running a chkdisc to solve some wifi logon issues I was having. I did, and I have not had the Apple Mobile Device problem since. It may have helped both problems.

John November 18, 2010 at 9:19 pm

…and here’s a good link explaining how to run it: http://www.windows-help-central.com/windows-vista-chkdsk.html

“Could not start the Apple Mobile Device service on Local Computer.
Error 5: Access Denied”

Problem is….I’m the ONLY one using my computer!!! I AM the ADMINISTRATOR!!!
Please help -.-

Ron August 7, 2011 at 10:11 am

Hey guys, I’m having the same issue here… tried everything above, and MORE. Trust me when I mean that in capitals. I want to sync my iPod Touch very badly to my laptop for new music transfers and unfortunately the service Apple Mobile Device Server/Helper won’t start. I know all about going into Services, checking if it’s Auto or not, etc. I still for some reason can’t turn it on; I try to start it in the services window and it just keeps loading and eventually I get my error 1053 which tells me the Local account couldn’t start it due to timely fashion error. When I go to Windows Task Mngr, I find that in Services I can see the AMDS again. Its status is “Stopped” for some reason every time I start the computer… and when I attempt to start it in Task Manager it prompts me that the Operation Could Not be Completed… Access denied. ANY HELP? :(

Bob August 17, 2011 at 2:17 pm

The Apple Mobile Device service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts service.

Anyone knows what this means?

dans August 19, 2011 at 1:49 pm

thanks….u are rock…..!!!

aaron August 21, 2011 at 10:05 pm

I tried both of the options but it still didn’t work. What do i do now?

Stuart August 26, 2011 at 1:05 am

Once I did this and tried to start it it came up saying “The Apple Mobile device service on local computer started then stopped. Some services stop automaticly if they are not used by another service or programe” any help would be appreicated !!!

Danny September 2, 2011 at 1:28 am

Thank you. it worked with easier instructions than other websites

Van September 4, 2011 at 9:31 am

I am using windows 7, and your instruction doesn’t work coz when I typed “services” in the search box in the startup menu, it says “NO ITEMS MATCH FOR YOUR SEARCH”. What should I do then??

david hobson September 5, 2011 at 1:22 am

Joe (august 3rd), Ron (august 7th),

geek889 October 28, 2011 at 3:51 am

hey everybody, I had the same problem that I have read a few times up here. The The Apple Mobile device service on local computer started then stopped. Some services stop automaticly if they are not used by another service or programe’

I spend a lot of hours trying to fix it, and the problem with my computer was that I had a new Virus Security Service, called Norman Security. This blocked out the Apple Mobile-device, so it was not able to work right. Don’t know if you guys just recently installed a new virus security, but this might be the solution to your problem, it was for me anyway.

You just have to make your virus security allow the Apple Mobile-Device and your Ipod/Iphone will connect properly to iTunes again. Hope it will work out for you guys too!

bukayo October 28, 2011 at 1:09 pm

hello guys i have this problem for 3 days and now i just figured it out, i think if the fix above is not working its because of a trojan in my case the name of the trojan is opachki.ru, i uninstall the itunes and components and i run the spybot search and destroy and i found out that i have a trojan after i deleted it and reboot, and i install the itunes and i do the fix above set to automatic and apply. i open the itunes and connect my iphone voila and its syncing! sorry for my english this is not my 1st language.

Stalker November 10, 2011 at 2:02 pm

my sister gave me an itouch. before she gave it to me she deleted everything on it and now it doesn’t have mobile service. how do i get it? the whole serch and start thing isn’t working. do i have to take it to an apple store?

Al January 17, 2012 at 9:21 am

ok so check services and check if the apple mobile devise is actually turned on cause it could say something else and it could not be turned on, thats what happened with mine, and just click start when you right click “Apple Moblie Devise” and also go to its properties and set it as automatic, and you’ll be good to go

Electro January 29, 2012 at 8:43 am

iPod Touch (4th Gen), iOS 5.x

ANOTHER SOLUTION for the problem:
MobileDeviceService stopped working and was closed;
and; Faulting application AppleMobileDeviceService.exe

From another web site, from user dkenealy:

…UNINSTALL MegaKey (and Mega Manager etc…) It is part of MegaUpload.

It worked perfectly for me !!!!! Yeahhh

Finally! Thank you dkenealy.

If anyone is still having the “ The Apple Mobile Device Service on local computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs ” error, I have found an easy solution.

I’m running Windows 7. I have an iPhone 3GS, however, the fix should work for any newer version of the iPhone. I also am running iOS5 which I had just recently upgraded.

Anyway. I trying to start the Apple Mobile Device service and I got the error mentioned above. I tried all of the fixes, i.e. disabling firewalls and anti virus, unplugging the iPhone, turning off iTunes, and nothing worked.

The solution was simple. I just upgraded to the latest version of iTunes. Restarted my machine, and then everything worked. iTunes found my found immediately.

Hopefully, this will work for everyone who is having this issue. It was a pain in the butt when the service would not start. I tried for over an hour to fix it. The upgrade of iTunes worked like a charm. Please let me know if this helps anyone else out and solves their issue.

All the best!

Stupid 2nd Gen iPod April 19, 2012 at 5:04 am

I’ve installed and reinstall iTunes, downloaded the iTunes file and extracted as a .rar file installed separately te Apple Mobile Device Support, nothing worked… someone said something about a virus but how could possibly be the same virus affecting all 3 computers in the same way? Please if anybody knows what to do I’M BEGGING YOU help me!

i need a help my i pad is not working for one day and everytime i try to open it there is a sign the say Itunes and like a charger between them an arrow

Ryan From Baltimore October 5, 2012 at 1:15 pm

Hi Everyone,

I posted on this thread months ago and posted my solution. However, now, that solution doesn’t work.

Now, I have my latest solution, which, I’m telling you, works. At least for now it does.

I have an iPhone 3GS running iOS6 ( iOS 6 ).

All you have to do to fix this problem is to uninstall iTunes and also the Apple Mobile Update program from your computer. Do this by uninstalling in your add / remove programs. Then, reinstall iTunes.

After that, everything worked fine.

This is the quickest and best way to solve the problem as far as I have found.

Take care!

Esther October 9, 2012 at 3:29 am

Thanks a million! This was exactly what I needed. Thanks for sharing!

cham November 7, 2012 at 7:27 pm
