Many a times our PC is used on shared basis, for example a computer at a College used by many students. Sometimes in a large family, a home computer is used by many family member.

If you are worried about your important data saved in your hard disk, and want to prevent users on your computer to access it from My Computer Window, then this is the right article for you.

In this article, I will tell you a simple and easy to follow policy settings in Windows that prevents access to hard disk partitions from My Computer / Computer in Windows Explorer.

This tutorial works with up to latest Windows 7 version as I have tested it on my Windows 7 Desktop computer.

Just follow these simple steps to Restrict Access To Hard Disk Partitions in Windows:

1. Press Windows + R key, in the Run Window, type “gpedit.msc” and press enter. This will lauch local group policy editor window.

2. On Local Group Policy Editor in Windows, navigate to the following path on the left hand side pane of the window.

User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Explorer

3. Now Double Click on the setting “Prevent access to drives from My Computer”. This will open a setting window. On this setting Window, click Enabled and select the drives for which you want to restrict the access. The simply Click OK to save the setting.

That is it, you will now see an error when you try to access a hard disk partition on a drive in My computer. The error message will tell you “The operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect from this computer. Please contact you system administrator”

So next time you see this Restriction Window, you know that Windows Explorer has been restricted. To remove this restriction, just follow the same steps again and in step 3, select the option “Not Configured” instead of “Enabled”.

May new laptops running Windows 7 are configured in such a way that they go to sleep when you close their lid. This might be a really way of saving energy when not in use, but many people, like me, who will schedule some work on the laptop like backups or downloads may not like this feature.

By closing the lid, i just want to get some privacy so that nobody can see my laptop screen and I want the downloads and data backup to continue while I have closed the lid. Closing lid also helps to save power because display of the laptop also consumes considerable part of your laptop battery / power. However you can still turn off your display even when the lid is open using this tool called MonitorOff

3. On this Power Options window as shown below, scroll to the “Power buttons and lid”, click on the small “+” symbol there, it will expand the options. Then click on the “+” symbol in front of “Lid close action” , click the “On battery” option and select the option called “Do nothing”, likewise click on “Plugged on” and select “Do nothing”.

DNS error – cannot fine server.

Oops ! this link appears to be broken.

I found out that its not me alone, there are many people facing similar problem. This may happen when the site you are trying to open is up and running and opens in other web browsers like Firefox, IE, Opera etc.

I have sometimes restarted my DSL router assuming that its my bad Internet connection causing this problem, I also checked the DNS settings, but they seemed fine.

This problem is because of a setting of Google Chrome called the DNS-Pre-fetching which will fetch the IP addresses of all the links on your current webpage so that when you click any of these links, it can save time on DNS resolution. In some rare instances, pre-fetching of DNS may fail, which cause this DNS error.

To fix this problem, you simply need to turn off this setting by following these 2 simple steps.

1. Click on the settings at the top right corner of the Google Chrome browser and click option.

2. Click on the “Under the Hood” and uncheck the option which says “Use DNS pre-fetching to improve page load performance”, press close button.

It was simple, wasn’t it ? After turning this feature off, your page load time will increase very slightly but it will not give you DNS errors if the site you are opening is up and running.

In this article, I am going to review a tool called SpyDLL Remover which is a lightweight and very well targeted DLL scanning tool which can scan for any spyware of infected code by canning the DLL (Dynamic Link Library) files running or installed on the computer. This tool is fully compatible with Windows 7 32bit and 64 bit editions, I have tested it on my windows 7 desktop. I will give a complete review of this effective tool.

One really nice thing about this tool does not require any installation, its a simple EXE file which you can carry on Pen Drive / CD / DVD and run on any PC which you suspect is infected with some spyware / malware.

This is how the interface looks like,

The interface is simple and easy to use. just run the tool and press “Start Scan” button on the tool and it will scan your DLL files for any malicious or suspected behavior.

It will show the results categories on a color coded scheme with different threat levels highlighted in different color.

The red ones are serious threats, the orange one are less severe and yellow one are mild. After scan is complete, you can check the information of the highlighted DLLs online and decide whether or not you want to remove the reported DLLs. It gives you options to remove the suspected / malicious DLL files.

The Process viewer tab on this tool allows you to see all the running processes and their corresponding DLL files and its details. click on the image below to see the detailed options at the bottom of this image which include :

Remove DLL

Check Online

DLL Info

Process Info

Kill Porcess

Another feature of this tool is the DLL tracer, this is very helpful if you want to know details of a DLL file in the extracted package of some software or otherwise. You can put the path of the DLL and SpyDLL scanner will trace the DLL and scan it.

Microsoft has been reported of a vulnerability discovered in Windows operating systems Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003 which exploits the VB Script. Microsoft has recently released an Advisory named “Microsoft Security Advisory (981169)”

As per the advisory there is a vulnerability that if a user presses F1 Key on being asked by a Website or webpage, the website can run potentially malicious code or scrip on such computers. That computer can get hacked, information can be stolen or it may also lead to data theft.

It is an advice to all our readers and Windows XP, Windows 2002 and Windows 2003 Server users to beware of this vulnerability and do not press the F1 Key when asked by a website. This may leave your computer unsecured or infected with virus or trojans.

Even if you are a Windows Vista User or Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 user, its a safety tip to not click F1 Key when asked by a website.

Most of the computers start accumulating lots of junk like temporary files, cache, cookies, temporary registry vales etc. In this article I will review a small freeware utility called Smart Auto Shutdown which helps you improve your computer’s speed by smartly cleaning up all these files just before shutdown, when you don’t need these files anymore.

Smart Auto Shutdown is a small utility that will sit with your tray icons . You can configure the options while installation or later using the tray icon. It gives you options to clean the following files and records just before shutdown :

Cleans files In temporary folders

Cleans Internet Explorer Cache

Cleans Firefox Cache

Cleans Cookies

Cleans Webpage visited history

Clean Opened Documents History

Cleans Temporary Registry values

You can configure the utility very easily to clean or not-clean any of the above mentioned items as per your needs, so its fully configurable.

During installation it will show a wizard to configure it for the first time use.

You can select what you want to clean and what you want to leave just as it is.

The next option asks you to start it with windows start. The benefit of this option is that it will always display a tray icon so you need not go and find it when you quickly want to shutdown your computer.

When you click the small red icon in the system tray, it shows a window like this which tells you how many files and settings are lined up for cleaning.

You can simply remove them without shutdown also by clicking the remove button, or when shutting down, just press the shutdown button on the window above and it will clean the computer and shutdown it.

The above icon is the Smart Auto Shutdown icon as it appears in my Windows 7 system tray. This toll is Windows 7 fully compatible.

Internet is full of viruses and trojans and that is why we always recommend to use some good anti-virus and anti-rootkit protection for your PC. Many windows computers which are infected with a particular type of rootkit infection are reported to be crashing and restarting abruptly and showing Blue Screen Of Death with following error codes.

WindowsUpdate_8007f0f4

0×8007f0f4

WindowsUpdate_FFFFFFFF

These errors start appearing on the rootkit infected computers after they install security update

977165 from Microsoft. The rootkit infection responsible for these crashes changes some of the system files which cause this crash or BSOD. In this article I will share some information to avoid such crashes and to scan your computer for the responsible rootkit infection.

Fix:

First of all, you need to check that whether your computer is infected with this particular rootkit or not, for this, you need to Download Microsoft FixIT tool and run it to scan your PC for rootkit infection :

If the above tool tells you that – “Your computer appears to be compatible with Microsoft Security Bulletin MS10-015” , this means that your computer is not infected. Otherwise refrain from installing the security update until there is a patch or fix from Microsoft on this problem.

Additionally, you can try the below rootkit removal tool and then run the Microsoft Fix it tool again to see whether the rootkit issue is fixed or not.

Download Sophos Anti RootKit Remover To Delete RootKits

The problem applies to Windows 7, Windows Vista , Windows XP, Windows Server 2008.

We all have some files or folders which we want to protect. These files maybe work related, personal files or any other files which you don’t want others to open. Specially if you have a computer which is used by many people like a home computers or an office PC, you might want to protect some confidential or personal files and folders.

In this article I am going to review a freeware tool called Protect Me which creates secure password protected containers in form of executable files. This means that you can keep these files on a Pen drive and open them anywhere without having to install this tool anywhere. It is protected by AES encryption which is very hard to break, so your files and folders will be safe inside this container.

To use it, just run the tool and drag the files and folders you want to protect inside the container, type in a password (one you can remember, else you will not be able to access the container). After that, click the Create Container Button. This will ask you a path to save the container, also the container name as seen in window below.

Select the path and save the container, it will pack all the files and folders inside the container as seen below. This container file will be slightly larger than the original size of all files and folder put together inside this container.

To access the protected files and folders, just double click the container exe files. It will ask you for the password, provide the correct password and you will get access to the files as seen below.

You can simply click on the file you want to access / open, and press the Run button, it will open the file or folder from that container.

Internet is a place which is flooded with security problems and viruses and you need to stay alert of any suspicious links or messages in the inbox or instant messenger.

There has been a virus which is spreading through MSN / Live messenger which shows you a link in the IM window with a text which says

“Hi,this is your photo? – some link here

Do not click on the link on this message, this takes you to a url which infects your computer with this virus. It downloads a virus file called Picture_2525.exe and installs it.

If you have accidentally clicked this link, below is the method to remove this virus manually.

Fix:

We recommend that you always use a good antivirus tool, free or paid, with real-time protection which can save you from such viruses.

If this virus has already infected your computer, open the task manager by pressing Shift + CTRL + ESC key together and kill the following tasks :

svlost.exe
svlostSrv.exe
tasman.exe

After this you need to kill the virus service. Press Windows Key + R and type the following command and press enter:

sc delete svlostServices

After this is open the following folder - c:\Windows\System32 and delete the below mentioned files:

libeay32.dll
ssleay32.dll
svlost.exe
svlosta.dll
svlostb.dll
svlostSrv.exe
tasman.exe

Now clean the Registry entries by running following commands using Windows Key + R using the run prompt:

reg delete "hkcu\software\microsoft\internet explorer\main" /v default_page_url /f
reg delete "hkcu\software\microsoft\internet explorer\main" /v "Start Page" /f

As a precautionary measure, change your MSN / Windows Live Password.
