Backup And Restore Installed Windows Programs From One Windows Computer To Other

by Rohit Khurana on October 8, 2011

Sometimes you might have come across situations in which you want to install a fresh copy of Windows on your computer and along with that you need to re-install all your utilities and software that were installed earlier in your PC. This becomes a very tedious task as all the settings for all those utilities and software that were saved in your system is lost and you have to save all settings right from the start for each one of them. One more scenario which may occur is that if you decide to change your PC with a new one, then also you have to install all the utilities and software needed by you and similar to previous scenario, here also you need to save all those settings again in your new PC.

So, for this we present you with one of the finest utility which will serve your purpose and will help you out in backing up all your installed applications before buying a new PC or installing a fresh copy of Windows on the system. As discussed earlier it is not necessary that you will find all the installers for all the applications which you want to use on your new system. So, the question is what if you couldn’t find installers of applications which you are intending to use on new system? As already discussed, problems get much bigger when saved settings and preferences of important applications have to be ported as well. So, for all such scenarios and issues we recommend you a small and useful tool.

PickMeApp is basically a small, useful, portable and a very powerful tool developed specially for this purpose. It is capable of capturing all the personalized applications along with all the saved preferences, so that users can easily use them on newly purchased systems without doing all the lengthy installations again followed by setting preferences which may prove to be a very complex task.

Personalized applications that we are talking about varies in a huge range and may be anywhere in between software development IDEs, image manipulation software, desktop publishing programs to simple utilities with which you’ve tweaked in order to use them in a desired way. So, you know very well how difficult it may be to re-install it as one can’t afford to lose them. That is why, this smart utility i.e. PickMeApp may come into picture, but initially it wasn’t necessarily designed to create backups on portable storage mediums, rather it can be used to capture applications on any local or remote location which can be further used and referenced.

You may download it from the link given below. After installing it in few simple steps, you may observe that it comes with simple two panned interface with installed applications on left side while captured application are listed on the other end. You may observe that using this utility is fairly simple and after launching the application, it will automatically start populating left side with all the installed applications, letting users select those which they want to capture for further use.

After selecting all the needed applications, you need to click on Capture Marked Application button which is present there in the interface. The process may take some time as it depends upon the size of marked applications and you may see that this capturing process exports all the saved data of an application into its native TAP format which can be further used on the new system and therefore it can’t be considered as merely copying the application files from one place to another as it involves lot more inner complexity.

So, overall we may say that PickMeApp, offers an easy way for porting personalized applications from one system to a new one. Since it’s a portable application, you can carry it on external drives to install captured applications in multiple systems. It works on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. So, just download it from the below given link and try it on your own.

I presume this “PickMeApp” portable application CAN’T port applications from one Windows XP to Vista or Win 7 and viceversa, can it?! Pretty sure it can run on either of the Windows OSs, but certainly can’t port applications from either OS’s to any other twos!!!

Answering Xantes,

The goal of PickMeApp to move applications from XP to Vista, Windows 7, Vista to Windows 7 and etc.
Those XP windows programs that are compatible with Windows 7 will functional normally after transfer.

PickMeApp is smart enough to do some install adjustments making a program to run on Windows 7. ( For example, an program installation path may be different in Windows 7. Or, for example, if a program uses .net assembles PickMeApp registers it differently on Windows 7)
