Trouble:

There are many parental control softwares to block unwanted websites or a certain type of websites. But if you want to block a few specific website for certain reasons, you can do it in much simpler way by editing hosts file.

I recently wrote about Editing Windows Hosts File Manually , but if you are not sure how to make changes to hosts file, then don’t worry, there is a free and simple tool called Proxy Blocker.

Fix:

Hosts file is the file which contains the domain names and IP addresses corresponding to it. If a domain name is present in the hosts file, it will not be searched from DNS server, hence it is blocked if that domain is forwarded to localhost. Many Viruses use the same technique to block certain websites, covered in this tutorial – A Particular Website Not Opening On My Computer

Proxy Blocker Tool by Schyzosoft edits the hosts file to add and remove entries in a convenient way in which you just need to specify the IP address or website name and it will add its name to the list of blocked websites by redirecting it to the localhost.

Proxy Blocker is a stand-alone utility of about 2 MB and does not require any Installation. In case of Windows Vista / Windows 7, you need to right click and select Run As Administrator Option to make it work correctly.
