Secunia has developed an online scanning tool called the Secunia Online Software Inspector which scans your computer for installed softwares which have security flaws in them of in simple terms they are not secure softwares. These softwares have been already updated but you might not be running the more secure latest versions on these softwares.

The Secunia Online Software Inspector is a Java based scanner which will run from Inside your browser and will scan all the softwares installed on your computers with their version information. When you click the start button as seen below, it will launch a Java based scanner which will prompt you for your permission to run the scan.

Once you allow the program to run, it will start the scan and will list down the vulnerable software versions installed on your computer.

The result page will list down the softwares as seen below with name of the software, Install location, version running on your computer. It will also list the more secure and latest version released by the software vendor which has fixed the security vulnerabilities.

One very useful and important thing is that it will give you the download links to the latest versions within the result as highlighted in the snapshot below.

Problem:

How many times it happens that you start you windows xp computer and you see the warining as below on your task-bar?

I guess the answer is almost every time !

What does it mean?

It is simply a warning from windows security center service when you are using a third party anti-virus or firewall software and not using windows default services.

Solution:

To fix this warning you just need to disable the Windows security center service.

Below are 3 easy steps to do the same:

Step1: Go to Start > Run

Step2: Type msconfig and press enter. This will open system configuration utility as shown below.

Step3: Go to Services tab, un-check the Security Center service. ( BEWARE: Do not change any other service settings, as it can mess with your windows xp and it may never boot again)

Step4: Press Ok and restart your computer.

That’s it Its fixed.

Note: You should disable the security center service only when you are using some third party anti-virus or firewall, otherwise it may really risk your computer’s security.

Problem:

One of our readers "The dark knight" reported a problem that he has recently installed a game which he wants to play offline, but it tries to connect to the Internet every now and then. There are some times when some applications like games ,software’s installed on your system try to connect to Internet for various reasons. This becomes very annoying specially when you don’t know how to block it.Don’t worry here is the way you can fix it.

Solution:

The solution to this type of problem is different depending whether you have Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or Windows XP without Service Pack 2.

For Windows XP with Service Pack 2

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2. Click Windows Firewall.

3. In the Windows Firewall dialog box, click the Exceptions tab, and then click Add Program

4. Now locate the program executable which tries to connect to Internet.

5. After you select your program, click OK.

6.Uncheck the check box for the program you just added if you don’t want it to connect to Internet.

For Windows XP without Service Pack 2:

In this case we prefer you can install a third party tool like Zone Alarm or free avast home edition which comes with free firewall if you don’t want to buy any firewall.

This will Fix the trouble.
