Most of the computers start accumulating lots of junk like temporary files, cache, cookies, temporary registry vales etc. In this article I will review a small freeware utility called Smart Auto Shutdown which helps you improve your computer’s speed by smartly cleaning up all these files just before shutdown, when you don’t need these files anymore.

Smart Auto Shutdown is a small utility that will sit with your tray icons . You can configure the options while installation or later using the tray icon. It gives you options to clean the following files and records just before shutdown :

Cleans files In temporary folders

Cleans Internet Explorer Cache

Cleans Firefox Cache

Cleans Cookies

Cleans Webpage visited history

Clean Opened Documents History

Cleans Temporary Registry values

You can configure the utility very easily to clean or not-clean any of the above mentioned items as per your needs, so its fully configurable.

During installation it will show a wizard to configure it for the first time use.

You can select what you want to clean and what you want to leave just as it is.

The next option asks you to start it with windows start. The benefit of this option is that it will always display a tray icon so you need not go and find it when you quickly want to shutdown your computer.

When you click the small red icon in the system tray, it shows a window like this which tells you how many files and settings are lined up for cleaning.

You can simply remove them without shutdown also by clicking the remove button, or when shutting down, just press the shutdown button on the window above and it will clean the computer and shutdown it.

The above icon is the Smart Auto Shutdown icon as it appears in my Windows 7 system tray. This toll is Windows 7 fully compatible.

We all have some files or folders which we want to protect. These files maybe work related, personal files or any other files which you don’t want others to open. Specially if you have a computer which is used by many people like a home computers or an office PC, you might want to protect some confidential or personal files and folders.

In this article I am going to review a freeware tool called Protect Me which creates secure password protected containers in form of executable files. This means that you can keep these files on a Pen drive and open them anywhere without having to install this tool anywhere. It is protected by AES encryption which is very hard to break, so your files and folders will be safe inside this container.

To use it, just run the tool and drag the files and folders you want to protect inside the container, type in a password (one you can remember, else you will not be able to access the container). After that, click the Create Container Button. This will ask you a path to save the container, also the container name as seen in window below.

Select the path and save the container, it will pack all the files and folders inside the container as seen below. This container file will be slightly larger than the original size of all files and folder put together inside this container.

To access the protected files and folders, just double click the container exe files. It will ask you for the password, provide the correct password and you will get access to the files as seen below.

You can simply click on the file you want to access / open, and press the Run button, it will open the file or folder from that container.

SMART – Service Management And Real Easy Tweaking Tool is a freeware tool which allows you to tweak with Windows Services in a very easy way.

This tool is not meant for playing around with services and must be used with care. There is a built in option to create a Windows System Restore Point before you use the tool. The tool works with Windows 7 , Windows Vista and Windows XP.

This tools will apply tweak to services based on the suggested configurations of Black Vipers.

This tool will help improve the speed of your Windows Computer by disabling some services that might be safely turned off. Using this tool is very easy, just download the tool and run it. The user interface is simple and intuitive.

IMPORTANT: Create a System Restore Point before tweaking any services. Because in some cases, it might make your windows computer in a unstable state. There is a button to create a Restore Point at the left bottom corner of the screen on this tool itself.

Once you select some Service settings, it takes about 1 minute’s time to implement that as it usually requires starting / stopping certain services. Use your judgment to select which configuration you want to select for services. If you are not sure of what tweak you need, just leave it the way it is.

Most old computers, older than 2 years or so, tend to get a lot of fragmented files and folders on the disk. When I say fragmented, I mean that one file is stored at multiple locations on the disk in small chunks.

This is a typical problem with most of the computers which make them slow because in order to access one single file, the computer needs to read all the small chunks of the hard-disk.

There are may tool to defrag your hard-disk drive. In fact Windows also has in-build Hard disk defragment tools to fix this problem.

In this article I am going to review a specialized hard disk defragment tool which is a freeware tool and works effectively to defrag the files, folders, boot time defragmentation and also scheduled defrags.

UltraDefrag is a freeware tool with following features :

system files defragmentation (registry, pagefiles…)

ultra fast NTFS analysis

fast defragmentation algorithm

effective volume optimization algorithm

safety, it can never damage processed files

simplicity, it can be used without reading the documentation

ability to defragment single file/directory from the context menu in Explorer

ability to defragment additional streams attached to NTFS files

ability to exclude any unimportant fiiles based on flexible filters

ability to defragment files which have number of fragments above specified threshold

ability to automatically break defragmentation when the specified time interval elapses

well readable HTML reports

powerful command line interface

ability to automatically hibernate/shutdown PC after a job

small handy scheduler

multilingual graphical interface

little binaries (less than 500 kb)

portable version available which requires no installation

native 64-bit support

open source code licensed under GPL / Free for personal use

Ultradefrag is very light weight and effective tool, I tested it on my computer and it works like a charm.

I recommend that you use this tool to optimize your PC. It will not make it extremely fast, but will make some considerable improvements in disk access.

I also strongly recommend to optimize some startup tasks for a considerable difference in speed of your old windows computer, See this tutorial for the same – Computer is slow at start up, takes too long to boot up

Trouble:

Flash drives now a day are most common and easy way of data transfer, but due to improper use your flash drive may get faulty and may cause issues like it does not format, data you stored disappeared etc.

It could be a case when you have a fake flash drive, we had written an extensive post on how to identify fake flash drives and this tool also will let you whether is a fake pen drive which is creating issues for you.

Here goes some description about this tool

Fix:

H2testw is a simple to use programs which allows you to test USB sticks for various kinds of errors, which occurs with USB Drives. It can also be used for any other storage media like memory cards, internal and external hard drives and even network volumes.

This application can be used to check other storage media like big space data drives, memory cards and even network hard disk partitions.

Note: If the drive you want to test is not empty, it can still test the drive for errors but wont be able to test the complete space on the drive, it will produce a prompt like the one shown above.

It fills the chosen target directory with test data and then reads it back and verifies it. H2testw does not overwrite or erase any existing data.

Download H2testw

MAC (Media Access Control) Address of any network device is a code which identifies that device uniquely. Usually all of our computers have a Network Card which has a unique MAC address which is a code of 6 Bytes (48 Bits).

This MAC address is usually fixed for the devices and is programmed into them while manufacturing, but most of the modern network adaptors can have a configurable MAC address.

Also there are free tools which can help change the MAC address in case you need to change the MAC address for some reason. Usually these tools are useful for Network Administrators and Internet Security professional.

In this article I will review a freeware tool DynaMAC which allows you to view and change your Network’s MAC Address.

DynaMAC is freeware tool Developed by Jonathan Danucalov. This is an easy to use tool which will display your Network Adaptor’s MAC Address. It gives options to set a custom MAC address or Reset it.

This tool may not work properly on some computers because of group policy restriction and Windows security settings. So give it a try if you are in a need to change your Computer’s MAC address.

Trouble:

Windows hard disk have Recycle Bin to recover your files that you delete accidentally. Recycle Bin Works for Hard Disk drives but not for removable pen drives and memory cards. Imagine that you accidentally hit delete button for an important file on your pen drive or some precious pictures / music on your memory card for phone or camera. As there is no recycle bin provided for Pen-drives and Memory cards, this data gets permanently deleted.

Although there are tools which help you recover permanently deleted files if they have not been over-written, see tutorial – Recover Deleted Files and Folders On Memory Card or Hard Drive For FREE . But the chances of recovery using recovery tools are not 100 %.

Its better to be safe than sorry, so now you can install a small utility called iBin on your pen drive and use it as a Recycle Bin for your Pen drive. In this article I will review the free tool called iBin which can save you from mess of recovering accidentally deleted files using complex and costly data recovery methods and services.

Fix:

iBin is a free tool for Windows and is very easy to use. You need to copy it on your pen drive / memory cards and run it there. After this it will stay in you system tray and will monitor any delete actions on the pen drive / memory cards.

Whenever you delete a file using delete button on keyboard or delete option on the right-click menu, the deleted file will move into iBin folder. Thus if you accidentally deleted a file, you will have an option to recover it as it is still lying in the iBin Folder. You can clean the iBin Folder later on using the iBin options.

With time the number of startup tasks becomes large and this slows down your Windows Computer booting time. In this article I will review a tool called Startup Discoverer which can display each of the startup tasks classified by the type of startup tasks.

Fix:

You can simply download and run this portable tool called Startup Discoverer. On running this tool it will show you a set of icons, each will filter the startup programs based on the type of startup programs.

You can also print the list if you want. After analyzing the startup processes, if you feel like removing any of these tasks from startup to make your computer boot up faster, you can follow out tutorial – Computer Is Slow At Startup, Takes Too Long To Boot

Beware – Do Not Remove Any System task like Winlogon.exe etc else windows may not boot again.
