The web browser you use will be your window on the digital world and will need to work well for hours at a time. However, like any piece of software, a browser can seem like a temperamental beast from time to time. This means that a little tender attention and troubleshooting will be required to set things right once more, so whether you are a fan of Microsoft`s Internet Explorer, Mozilla`s Firefox or Google`s Chrome browser, then the following tips might be useful.

Microsoft Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer is one of the most popular browsers on the planet, simply because it is include with every copy of Windows. However, it is therefore one of the most vulnerable browsers out there because every hacker and malware writer wants to exploit it. If you are having any problems with your version of IE, whether it is related to page loading or annoying malware, it is essential to update to the latest version. Using IE 6 is not only hazardous, but also old-fashioned as it has none of the advanced features of the latest Internet Explorer 8. The update is free and by having the latest browser onboard you will be able to enjoy all of the new interactive content that exists online.

Mozilla Firefox

Firefox has become a firm favorite amongst those looking for an alternative to Microsoft`s browser. This too is constantly updated and as an open source project new fixes and improvements are made frequently. Basic troubleshooting usually involves closing down Firefox when you encounter an issue and restating it to see if the problem is ironed out. Persistent problems can be addressed by clearing the cookies and cached memory, which is performed by clicking the Tools menus and then highlighting Clear Recent History.

If you want more advanced control over Firefox for troubleshooting, then starting it in Safe Mode will give you a secure environment in which to work. There should be a shortcut for Safe Mode in the start menu next to the main Firefox shortcut, but you can also enter "Firefox -safe-mode" minus the speech marks into the Run function, which is accessed from the Start menu. This will let you know if a theme or plug-in is causing the problem and it can then be disabled.

Google Chrome

Google`s browser is the most recent addition to the mainstream browser market and though its share is still relatively limited compared to its rivals, it is growing in popularity thanks to the strength of Google`s brand. Because of this immaturity, there are still bugs and crashes to fix. Google recommends creating a new user profile in Chrome if you are experiencing problems with your existing one.

General Browser Troubleshooting Tips

If you are having trouble with certain web pages no matter what browser you are using, it might be worth checking your actual internet connection and firewall. Some routers and integrated protection software will automatically block access to certain sites which are deemed to be dangerous. For the most part this is a great thing, as it will keep your PC free from malware, but sometimes a perfectly harmless site can get blacklisted by accident. If this is the case, you may need to look beyond your browser for a solution and when using mobile broadband, remember that connections can be dropped without warning.

This is a guest article contributed by Isabella from Broadband Expert, you can also send in guest articles to us if you want to connect with our readers and share your computer troubleshooting knowledge to help them.

Trouble:

When you manually upload or download files which are other than text files to a Web-Server or When you manually download a file from a web-server using FTP commands or FTP clients like Filezilla or similar clients, the files may or may not work correctly.

Files uploaded or downloaded using FTP get bad mainly because the files become corrupt or damaged because of wrong transfer mode. Most of the client like Filezilla work excellent in selecting the transfer mode for files upload and download, but sometimes this may not work correctly because of encryption on certain files.

I faced this problem when I uploaded an encrypted .php file on my server. This was so because .php files are usually not encrypted, but because I purchased a proprietary script which was encrypted by the author. The Filezilla client considers .php files for ASCII mode FTP transfer. That created problems for me as files were not readable after I uploaded them to the server.

There can be another case when you are downloading a file from the server using command prompt or FTP client like Filezilla and the file does not open or gets corrupt while downloading.

In this article I will share with you the correct settings you should use with Filezilla / while using command prompt to upload / download a file from web-server.

Fix:

I will share methods for command line transfer and transfer using Filezilla.

Correct Settings To Download / Upload Files in Strictly FTP Mode

Using Filezilla Client

Open Filezilla FTP client, go to the Transfer > Transfer type > Binary

Changing this mode to binary ensured that the binary files do not get corrupt while upload or download. You can permanently set this mode to Binary because Binary Transfer Mode supports both binary as well as ASCII files.

Using Command Prompt for FTP

On command prompt, after you log into the FTP using the username and password, at FTP prompt, type command “bi” to change to binary mode. This will ensure that the files you upload and download are properly in binary mode only.

Hope you find this tutorial will save you from troubles related to file corruption via FTP transfer of binary files in ASCII mode.

Trouble:

We have got some mails from the readers who reported some problems they had with the on screen keyboard in vista, as many of them see this on screen keyboard on the login screen every time they boot up their machine.

Some of the users are so much annoyed by on screen keyboard in vista that they just want to remove this from their copy of vista permanently. We will tell you all the ways with which you can either disable on screen keyboard in vista, disable it or permanently.

Lets figure out different ways to disable on screen keyboard in vista

If you are seeing the on screen keyboard on the login screen, you can disable by following the instructions given below.

Method 1:

Press Win + U together to launch Ease of Access Center. Then click on "Use the Computer without a mouse or keyboard". Then on next page uncheck the box which says "Use On-Screen Keyboard". Click Save button and you are done.

Method 2:

Open Start menu, Ease in the search box, click Ease of Access Center under the search results.

Click Use the computer without a mouse or keyboard, and uncheck the box which says Use On-Screen Keyboard. Click Save when you are finished.

Method 3:

If for some reason you just want to disable the on screen keyboard more quickly just like toggling, then you can use this free utility called Vista On Screen Keyboard Switcher developed by vasanrulez

Trouble:

Many of us face a problem while copying data from USB External hard-drives on our old computers. This problem is faced more with old computers as compared to new computers. The same portable USB Hard works fine on some computers, may not work well on your old computer.

There can be many possible reasons for the same. In this article I will share with you some simple ways to test and fix this problem.

Fix:

Power Related Problems With USB External Hard Disk

Most of the USB external hard drives work on power extracted from the USB port only. This power is used to spin the hard disk motor which is necessary to the read and write on the Hard disk. Standard USB ports deliver a Maximum current of 500mA at a voltage which may vary between 4.4V to 5.25V, this means a Max power output of 2.5 Watt. This is usually enough to operate an External hard disk.

However some old computers with old USB ports and old power supplies may get a degraded current rating which are way below 500mA. These ports can run pen drives well as they require little power compared to a USB hard disk. On such computers, there is a simple way to make these drive work using a USB- Y-Cable. Like the one which is shown in the image below:

These cables are usually included when you buy an external hard drive or External USB hard drive casing. The correct way of using USB-Y-Cable is to plug the two USB ports on same end to the Computer and one port on the other end to the USB Hard Disk Drive. Connecting the two ports of USB-Y-Cable to the two USB ports of the computer uses the current capacity of two ports to drive the Hard Disk, this means that if the max current capacity of one ports is only 250 mA, the combined current capacity will be approximately 500mA which will ensure that the USB HDD can get sufficient power to run.

In case you still face problems, then see the solution below to fix the file system problems. If that too does not work consider upgrading to a new high capacity Power Supply Unit.

File System Problems With External HDD

One of the most common reasons for this kind of problem is hard disk file system errors. These errors can be fixed by running a disk scan. See our tutorial below to fix this problem:

Trouble:

I tried to update google chrome browser on my office desktop running Windows XP SP2. Due to some mysterious reasons, the update was finished but the google chrome did not load. I restarted the desktop but it was on no use. The desktop shortcut was also not working.

After I checked the target path of the shortcut, I realized that the target files were missing.

After all this mess, I realized that during the upgrade, something went wrong, the files got deleted but not installed back again properly. In this article I will share the solutions to this problem.

Fix:

The problem arises because of abrupt or abnormal termination of the google chrome update because of some reason. To solve this problem, try the below steps:

1. In case the Google Chrome was previously Installed, Uninstall the previous one by going to Control Panel > Add Remove Programs (Programs and Features In Windows Vista). This will ensure that the registry entries for the wrongly installed or bad-installation is removed.

2. Go to the Location

For Windows XP : C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Google\Chrome\

For Windows Vista : C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\

At above location, you will find some Google Chrome files, delete them manually before trying another fresh installation. Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

3. Download and Install the Google Chrome From Google Chrome Official Website or you can Download Google Chrome Full Setup [ Offline Installer ] and try a fresh installation.

4. If you are reading this step, it means that the first three steps 3 did not work for you. This is quite possible as google chrome beta versions can be bit unstable sometimes. In this case, i would recommend to download the portable version of Google Chrome and extract this package by double clicking it. Paste the extracted folder into the Program files or C:, create a desktop shortcut of file at location “\Portable_Google_Chrome_2.0.160.0\Chrome\Chrome.exe” and Enjoy google chrome without any Installation. You can copy these files to a pen drive also and run it on any windows computer from the pen drive only.

This portable version also had a chrome_update.exe application, that will update the google chrome to its latest version available. It worked like a charm for me. Hope it will work well for you too.

Trouble:

After a long time of neglect, I powered on my old desktop yesterday and decided to install Ubuntu 8.10 on it. I rarely use my old desktop which is why I decided to make it a test machine and run it dual boot with Windows XP and Ubuntu.

I installed ubuntu in dual boot using Wubi : See this tutorial on Install Ubuntu (Linux) Inside Windows Without Formatting Hard-Disk

I had done installation on my HP Pavallion laptop, it worked fine, but not my old desktop.

On my desktop after I enter user id and password at Ubuntu login screen, it will accept username and password, but it will not show the ubuntu desktop after login.

I searched for the reason for this problem on ubuntu forums and found an easy solution. I will share the same with you in this post.

Fix:

Before I tell you the fix lets talk why this problem occurred in the first place. In ubuntu 8.10 CD, there is a Software Problem in Intel video driver for the older Intel 830 and 845 integrated video cards. My old desktop had Intel 845 card. Because of the graphics driver issue, the desktop was not loading.

The solution is fairly simple, disable these derivers and then restart the computer and ubuntu will load without any problems. It will update the drivers to latest drivers afterwards during online upgrade of Ubuntu.

Follow these simple steps to disable the Intel drivers which stop the Desktop to load properly :

1. After entering the username and password, the screen will go blank with the Mouse Cursor still working. In this condition, press these three keys on keyboard together : Ctrl + Alt + F1 . Pressing these three keys together will load the recovery console. It will ask your password, type the password and press enter.

2. On recovery console type the following commands one by one and press enter.

sudo apt-get remove compiz
sudo apt-get remove compiz-core
exit

While running the above commands, it will ask for your password or confirmation. Proceed with Y for yes and press enter.

3. Restart the computer and Ubuntu 8.10 will load normally.

It worked for me, try it out. Share your comments and suggestions below.

We will share the process for both Windows XP and Windows Vista

We will share all steps assuming that the mouse is faulty, so all steps we mention below make use of only the keyboard.

One of our readers Rahul submitted problem saying:

When I start pc it show error message "Intel CPU uCode error" show on startup and show f1 to resume. When i press f1 window start without problem, but how can resolve this issue.

Most of the errors which are detected by the BIOS are displayed at the boot screen with an options to Press F1 key to continue and ignore that error. This error is one such error. There can be several reasons for this problem including:

Problem In BIOS Software

Compatibility Problem Between CPU and Motherboard

In this post we discuss the solution to Intel CPU uCode Error.

Fix:

A bug in BIOS software can really goof up and show error like Intel CPU uCode Error. So in case you are getting such error, first thing we recommend is to upgrade the BIOS software to the latest version available online on the manufacturer’s website.

BIOS upgrade will solve the problem in about 95 % of cases. Rest 5 % can be because of hardware incompatibility like the FSB frequency of the Motherboard and Processor not matching properly, making one of them running in slow mode.

To check for hardware compatibility, check the user manual of Motherboard and see what models of CPU it supports. You need to ensure that the CPU you are using is fully compatible with the Motherboard that you are using,if not, then you need to replace on of them with the compatible component.
