You must have seen that in new Windows 7 edition, the option to shut down the system is given at the bottom but if we want to switch the user, log off the windows then we will have to click the arrow sign in front of it and then we can access those options. Today i will tell you some of the methods through which you can easily change that option in the bottom of the start menu.

Many of the users do not prefer to shutdown their system, as they either hibernate their system or they put their system in sleep mode. Theses users have loads of work on their system so they prefer not waste time on booting the system again, shutting down the system becomes very rare for them and it is inconvenient for them to see that Shutdown option in the bottom of the start menu instead of Sleep or Hibernate or Log Off option.

Just follow the steps mentioned below and then you will be easily able to change that option from Shut down to any other desirable option.

  • Click on the Start option to open the Start menu. It will appear as shown below, wherein you will be able to see the shout down option at the bottom.

  • Now right click on that option, a single options named as properties will appear (as shown below in the snapshot).

  • Now click that properties option, an application window named as Start Menu and Taskbar properties will appear which be analogous to the one shown below. You will see that this window will be containing three tabs which are toolbar, taskbar and Start Menu.

  • Under the Start Menu tab you can see an option named as Power Button action and in front of it the initial status will be Shutdown which can be changed by selecting any of the desirable option available in the scroll down menu (as shown in the snapshot below).

  • Select any of the option and then click OK, which will confirm the change and when next time you will open the start menu, the change will be similar to the one shown below in the snapshot (as i selected the hibernate option).

I hope that the above mentioned steps will help you to solve the problem mentioned in the first paragraph. Go for and try it and if you have a better solution then please put it down in the comments as it will be a pleasure of ours to share it.

Thanks for the tip. It’s so simple to change the function of power button on my lappi that I didn’t know.

By the way, can’t we change its action to show us a list of options (as we had in XP)

I went through this process exactly as described above but it did not work. The drop-down menu in the properties dialogue box shows “log off” as the option, but “shut down” is still shown on the start menu. Any idea on how to fix this issue?
