Check whether a file is infected by virus

by Abhishek Bhatnagar on September 30, 2008

These days viruses are spreading so rapidly, our computer systems, pen drives get infected with viruses from our friend’s computers and college or school computers some of which are already infected with viruses.

Many time it happens when your pen drive gets infected with virus and you have some very important files which you want to back up, but also want to make sure that file should not be infected with a virus.

Let’s see how can you test whether those important files which you want to back up from your virus infected computer or pen drives are virus free.

In order to check whether a particular file is virus infected, you may use your antivirus and let your antivirus scan that file. But in most of the cases when your computer is infected by a virus your computer antivirus may not detect the virus in that file. In that case you can try these online-tools mentioned below to run a scan and check whether that file is virus infected.

1. Kaspersky Online File ScannerIt lets you scan a a particular file on your computer or you can also check whether a particular program which you have downloaded from the internet contains any virus, spyware or adware etc.

Limitation: Only 1 file of maximum size 1 MB can be scanned through Kaspersky Online File Scanner

Note: You can also try the free virus scan on your system from Kaspersky if the file is greater than 1 MB or there are multiple files which you think may be infected by virus.

2. Virus Total Virus Scanner – Virus Total is a free service that scan the suspicious files and lets you detect viruses, worms, trojan or any kind of malware infected files.

3. – This is one the most active and effective scanner to scan virus infected files, virus definitions are updated every hour and there is a 10MB file limit per file you upload to check.

We hope these online free virus scanner will let you find out whether the file is infected by a virus, spyware or malware etc.
