Today I have got an application named Remote Utilities which can be used to do remote access with other computers by bypassing the firewall. The software is also known as remote desktop software which provides secure and an easy access to a remote PC. Using this software you can view the screen of the remote computer and operate its keyboard and mouse using your keyboard and mouse. The software can be used to connect over LAN or Internet as in both the cases the connection is set up using the IP address of the individual Windows Computer. The company which has made the software has given it a tagline i.e. “The Swiss Army Knife Of Remote Computing”.
The application basically consists of two components i.e. A RUT-Viewer setup on a local computer and An RUT-Server setup on a remote computer. From an RUT-Viewer you can access any number of remote computers using either LAN or internet connection. The RUT-Server needs to be installed on the remote PC that you need to administer or want to support. The application has different modes of connection for different tasks you need to perform on the remote PC i.e. Full Control and View Only. The File Transfer mode is used to transfer the files from one system to the other. The application is very secure also as it needs to ensure the security of the password and the data transfer between the two terminals. It uses encryption for the data send over the network using encryption algorithms which have 2048 bit public key and 256 bit session key. The software is compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2008/2003. It is also compatible with both 32-bit as well as 64-bit systems.
This is the first window that will open when you will run the software for the first time after downloading and installing it. The software doesn’t require installation and will run directly from the exe file which you will get after extracting the ZIP file. The application has five toolbar options Connection, View, Tools, Remote install and Help. The above image shows the options in the Connection menu. The various mode available in which you can connect the two systems are specified on the right hand side of the software in the rectangular window whose heading is modes.
The above image shows the menu option in the View menu. The important options in this menu are Show groups, Show connection modes, configure connection modes panel and Reset panels.
The above image shows the tools menu which has options like Ping, Refresh Status, Language, Default connection properties and Options. The Ping option is used to send a text message to the other computer. The language option is used to select the language. Default connection properties will give you the option to modify the connection properties. Options will give you the option to modify various things like Hotkeys, Remote screen, File transfer, Update and Search.
The Remote Install menu has a built in Remote Installation tool that enables you to automatically deploy the RUT-Server in a network or a workgroup environment.
