[Privacy] Disable or Enable Facebook Chat Partially Or Completely

by Rohit Khurana on April 11, 2013

Facebook is not only social networking, but with ever evolving online-offline world, it has become a medium to consume updates and information. I use Facebook for both work and pleasure and I am almost on FB all day long either on my PC or my phone. Now there is one big issue with Facebook messaging or Facebook chat that it is very distracting at work. Especially there maybe a large set of people on the friend list, whom you may not want to interact with during work hours. So it becomes a privacy issue when someone pings you on Facebook chat just like that when you might be in the middle of some important task or meeting. In this article, I will show you how you can enable or disable Facebook chat partially or completely.

Simply follow these steps:

Step 1: Log into your Facebook account from your computer.

Step 2: On the bottom left side of the screen, click on the small settings (gear like) icon. Then click on Advanced Chat settings.

Disable or Enable Facebook Chat (1)

Step 3: This will open an Advanced Chat settings window. Here you have three options-

Option 1: Allow all friends except – Use this option to block some friends whom you might not be comfortable to chat on Facebook. It will block only for this/these selected individual(s).

Options 2: Only for some friends-  To me, this option makes most sense, as I can allow only close friends to connect on chat and rest all bee blocked from chatting with me on Facebook.

Options 3: Turn Off Chat- Use this option only when you want to turn off chat for everyone, which maybe the case with many.

Disable or Enable Facebook Chat (2)

NOTE: In all these cases, the people who can not chat with you, will still be able to send messages, but the messages won’t show up as chat, instead they will go in your Facebook messaging inbox like email messages. Hope you find this information useful, do share this tip with your friends.
