We all have pictures on our computer, our mobile phones, camera memory cars, pen drives etc. With digital cameras becoming a part of our life through compact cameras, mobile-phone cameras, and other media, we all ten to have lots of pictures. Also there are numerous Wallpapers and other pictures we get from friends and download from Internet.
With pictures getting unorganized and spread over folders, hard disk and memory cards makes it very difficult to determine if we are carrying many copies of same pictures and loosing a lot of disk space in keeping multiple copies of high-resolution pictures at multiple places. A simpler way is to use a freeware tool which can find duplicate files based on file names and sizes. Some such tools are Fast Duplicate Finder . Doing this will clean up your hard disk space by removing duplicate copies.
In this article I will review a very effective and professional level tool called Visual Similarity Duplicate Image Finder developed specially for comparing pictures on actual image processing basis. This is an excellent tool which is not just another file comparing utility, as it will actually match the pictures with other in visual terms and locate pictures which look similar, even if they have totally different file names, location and file sizes. If these pictures look alike, Duplicate Image Finder will be able to locate the similarity and highlight the same.
The user interface of the tool is simple and easy and lets you do all the basic stuff from one single Window with few tabs and columns.
To start with, click on the Add Folder and select the folders where you keep your pictures and wallpapers. You can add as many folders as you want. This will ensure that you can scan all the files at different locations or different drive at same time.
After you are done with the folders you want to scan for Duplicate pictures, click the Start Scan Button. But before you hit the Start Scan button, you can change the Scan settings on the bottom right hand of the screen if you want to scan with some custom settings.
Also If you want to leave a certain kind of files or some folders not to be included in this scan or some specific needs, just click the Filter option on the top Bar of the tool. You can also select the threshold sizes of the files to be scanned saving on scan time. You can also set not to scan files older or newer than a particular date. You can exclude file extensions or file name patterns etc. This is a very detailed level of filtering support and will fit almost all professional needs of image comparison.
Set a filter if you need one or just leave it empty and it will scan every image in the folders that you have selected. After the scan it will tell you the status of the duplicates it finds along with the percentage similarity in those images.
This scan completion will notify you with the number of pictures with similar duplicates and will show you a complete report and preview of the matching images in the bottom pane of the same windows.
The above image has a column with checkboxes which are automatically checked based on these comparisons. You can change the “Auto-Check” preferences to select the way these images are checked based on the duplicates. The bottom pane has the preview of the image highlighted in the report along with its duplicate file path. To delete or move the duplicate files, just click the Auto-Check tab on the bottom pane.
In the After Scan Actions, you can simply delete the duplicate pictures or move them to some folder. You can select the path of the folder where you want to put duplicate pictures as illustrated in the above snapshot.
After you are done, just save the project file by clicking the save button on the top bar of the window, this will save your time in future when you keep adding more pictures. Next time you want to scan, simply run the saved project file, it will run the same scan with same preferences saving you a lot of time and energy.
