Play Music And Videos On Windows 8 and 7 Computer or Tablet On Any Network Computer Or Device

With new operating systems coming in, one needs some time to adapt and make the new devices work with older and other gadgets. With Windows 8 being the new kid on the block, today we explore some options to make media sharing work among different Windows versions as well as other devices which allow media sharing and streaming like the PS3, DLNA equipped TVs, android TV boxes etc. to name a few. In this article, we share with you how you can enable media sharing on Windows 8 and Windows 7 laptops, computers, tablets and other windows devices so that you can play videos, music, view pictures stored on one of your Windows device on your entire home network device.

Enable Media Sharing To Play Music And Videos From Windows Computer On Network Devices

Its simpler than you think, simply follow these simple steps. These steps are common in Windows 8 and Windows 7.

Step 1: Open Control Panel and go to  > Network and Sharing Center

Step 2: In Network and sharing center, go to “Choose home group and sharing options”.

Step 3: Scroll to the option which says “Share media with devices”, in case this option is disabled, click on the choose media streaming option to enable it.

Step 4: If the options was disabled in step 3, click on the “Turn on media streaming” button, else, jump to step 5.

Step 5: Review the network devices which you want to share your media with and select allowed option for them and blocked for the devices which you don’t recognize. If you have limited number of devices and you recognize all, click allow all and click Ok.

This is it, its all you have to do. In Windows media player 12, you also get an option to turn on media sharing from within Media player as well in the stream option under library as seen below, but it may not be there always, so follow the above 5 steps.

Below are the snapshots of two other computers on my network streaming videos from my Windows 7 desktop. One of the other computers run Windows 7 and other runs Windows 8.

In the explorer also, you will see Homegroup location listing the PC where all the files are available.

Additional Tip: Add more of your video folders to the library on all Windows devices with media sharing, it will ensure more and more media to be available on your sharing homegroup.
