I don’t know how it occurred but suddenly I see HomeGroup icon on windows 7 desktop, no matter how I tried but I could not remove these icons form my desktop either by dragging theme to recycle bin or by pressing shift+delete [permanent delete]. When I right click on these icons they do not show any option to permanently delete.

After some googling I figured out that the only way to remove these icons from desktop it to tweak windows registry, Windows Seven Forums has already posted a resolution to this problem by creating registry files which you need to merge to your windows registry to add or remove the libraries icon on desktop in windows 7

Seems you can also open it up and choose to ‘leave the homegroup’ which disables and removes the icon.

Type services.msc in RUN or Startmenu Searchbox and press Enter. It’ll open “Services” window.

Look for the following 2 services:

HomeGroup Listener

HomeGroup Provider
Once you find them, double-click on each and change the “Startup type” to Disabled. Apply the changes and exit from Services window.

That’s it. It’ll permanently disable “HomeGroup” feature and its icon will also be removed from Windows Explorer.
