[Solved] Fix Internet Explorer Close Automatically After Launch

Yes, there are many windows users which face this problem when they try to go to website using internet explorer which comes pre installed in windows, they see IE open up and then shut down automatically without any warning and sometimes with some warning which says “Internet Explorer has encountered an error and needs to close” with some error signature. As per most of the users on their PC, Internet Explorer crashes, stops working, or closes immediately after being opened, you might get an error message about Internet Explorer not working or that it encountered a problem and needs to close.

Normally if this is the same thing or some thing similar is happening with the internet explorer on your windows pc, there are many reasons which could be behind this and they can vary from one PC to another. Following are some methods which you can try and see if they can fix the the internet explorer hanging or frequent closing for you.

Try Disabling The Add-ons In Internet Explorer

Most of the time there are some addons in Internet Explorer which may cause problems, you can follow the procedure below to disable these addons.

1. Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Internet Explorer.

2. Click the Tools button, and then click Manage Add-ons.

3. Under Show, click Downloaded controls to display all ActiveX controls.

4. Click the ActiveX control you want to delete, and then click More information.

5. In the More Information dialog box, click Remove. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for every control you want to delete. When you are finished, click Close.

Note: If you are not able to follow the above steps because internet explorer close automatically when you try to follow the above steps, you can try launching internet explorer without addons by following the procedure below. But for this you will need to have Internet Explorer 8 or above.

Click the Start button, click All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools, and then click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons) or launch IE by typing the following command in run prompt.

“iexplore -extoff” [ Type Without Quotes ]

Another possible reason behind internet explorer crashing or shutting down unexpectedly could be wrong settings, you can fix the internet explorer settings in this case by using Microsoft Fix It tool designed to fix reset internet explorer settings or else you can follow the steps below to reset internet explorer without any software needed.

  1. Close all Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer windows.
  2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  3. In Control Panel, open Internet Options.
  4. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Reset.
  5. In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset.
  6. When Internet Explorer finishes restoring the default settings, click Close, and then click OK two times.
  7. Close Internet Explorer, and then reopen it. The changes take effect the next time that you open Internet Explorer.

The Reset Internet Explorer Settings feature restores the following items to their default settings:

  • Home pages
  • Search scopes
  • Browsing history
  • Form data
  • Passwords
  • Appearance settings
  • Toolbars
  • ActiveX controls

Additionally, the Reset Internet Explorer Settings feature disables all add-ins. However, it does not remove the add-ins.

You can easily remove internet explorer under windows components in Control panel >> Add remove programs >> add remove windows components in older version of windows like XP. In case you are running windows 7 and you have IE 8 or 9 you can uninstall them under Control Panel >> Programs and Features and re download internet explorer from IE Website and install them to fix the entire issue.

Procedure To Uninstall IE in Windows 7 or Vista

Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

To uninstall Internet Explorer 8 or Internet Explorer 9 from a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, follow these steps:

  1. Close all programs.
  2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Click Programs, and then click Turn Windows features on or off.
  4. In the list of Windows features, click to clear the Internet Explorer 8 or the Internet Explorer 9 box.
  5. Click Yes when you are prompted.
  6. Click OK. Internet Explorer 8 or Internet Explorer 9 will now be uninstalled. The system will restart after the installation.

To install Internet Explorer 8 or Internet Explorer 9 on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, follow these steps:

  1. Close all programs.
  2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Click Programs, and then click Turn Windows features on or off.
  4. In the list of Windows features, check the Internet Explorer 8 or the Internet Explorer 9 box.
  5. Click OK, and then wait for system to restart.

Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008

To uninstall Internet Explorer 8 or Internet Explorer 9 from a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, follow these steps:

  1. Close all programs.
  2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Click Programs, and then click Uninstall a Program.
  4. In the Tasks pane, click View installed updates.
  5. In the list of installed updates, double-click Windows Internet Explorer 8 or Windows Internet Explorer 9, and then click Yes when you are prompted for confirmation.
