Folder options disabled by Virus / Trojan

by Rohit Khurana on December 25, 2007

Are you among those who are not able to access or see your folder options under File Menu>>Tools in Windows Explorer on your Windows XP ? This problem of hidden or disabled folder options occur normally due to malicious virus (w32.rontokbro@mm) activity.

The virus creates an entry in registry to disable “Folder Options” in Windows explorer.

Let us see how we can fix it.

In most of the cases, even if the virus is been already removed by your anti-virus program, it doesn’t restore the registry back to the original state. Also anti-virus usually does not delete the registry entry created by the virus.

For restoring the registry settings, follow the steps given below

Enable your folder options in explorer.

1. Go to Start > RUN

2. Type regedit and press enter.

3. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Policies > Explorer

4. On the right side of the screen, you can see some registry entry names, out of them, right-click on NoFolderOptions and click Modify option.

5.A new small screen pops up, on this screen, sen the value data field as 0 (zero).Press OK.

That’s it but it requires reboot. Trouble Fixed.

If you don’t want to play with the registry yourself ,you can also download the registry file and double click it to add it to the registry.

Thnx alot!!!

None of the fixes I found on other websites worked(neither did doing yours manually – registry didn’t have “NoFolderOptions” entry) but the registry download did the trick!

Thnx alot – your help is very much appreciated – all the way from South Africa :-)

Even after following the steps the error is not rectified. i.e. the folders are still hidden. The registry value was already 0.
Any other ways to do this?

has anybody tried using gpedit.msc in the command prompt to fix this problem? i’m using this instead of regedit

worMz August 11, 2009 at 4:00 pm

this is how to use gpedit.msc:

A. Start–Run–type gpedit.msc then click OK

a window will open:

B. go with this menu: (Click the + sign to see further menu)

-User Configuration
-Administrative templates
-Windows components
-Windows Explorer

C. it is with this menu to do the trick”

1. When Windows Explorer is click, options will open at the RIGHT SIDE of the window. Find “Removes the Folder Options menu item from the tools menu”
2. Point the the cursor of the mouse to this option then right click where you will see the option “Properties”. Left Click this option.
3. Option will we be presented:
a. Not configured
b. Enabled
c. Disabled
4. Choose “Enabled”
5. CLOSE the entire window (Click x from the window)
6. Repeat this trick from A to C no. 1 to 3.
7. This time choose “not configured”
8. End of trick.

worMz August 11, 2009 at 4:04 pm

hope this help except for Windows Xp Home Edition where there is no gpedit.msc

Jahangir August 22, 2009 at 9:33 pm

I have also face this problem in past. U just install Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware

Scan your Pc with Malewarebytes and it will fix registry issue automatically.

And I Suggest you to Use Kaspersky Antivirus or Kaspersky Internet Security for Protect your computer for viruses. If you couldn’t find these software so email me I’ll send you links for both with keys or patches……

Josh August 20, 2010 at 6:20 am

Same issue, but when I get to the Registry Editor and follow the folder path and end up at Explorer, I don’t see the exact registry on the right side that says “NoFolderOptions”. I do see NoActiveDesktop, NoDriveAutoRun, NoDrives, etc… What do I do?????

lester November 17, 2010 at 11:33 am

to enable hidden check mark to unhide check mark go to. properties /customise/change icon/choose folder
and ok close properties and open again and check hidden to uncheck…. kuala your folder back to unhide.

Aftab Anwar December 18, 2010 at 2:44 pm

I used your tip step i.e.
3. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Policies > Explorer
but there is no registry entry of NoFolderOptions but i Created the new one and modified its value accordingly but the Hidden Property of the Folder is still Disabled and Checked although i can see and access this folder but when i move to my mobile Memory Card there i can’t use/View. Please
give some other tip/s to work on
