Giveaway – Handy Backup For All Your Backup And Synchronization Needs – 10 Licenses To be Won Worth $39 Each

by Rohit Khurana on April 23, 2010

Internal Computer Hard disks are still the main storage area for our important data and these hard disks certainly have a limited life which is usually between 3 to 5 years. We have out most important data, photographs, documents and other important files saved on our had disk. Its always advisable to keep a copy of your important data on some external disk like DVD / external hard drives or any online backup servers etc.

I usually take a backup of my important data from my computer’s hard drive to an external drive to ensure that I have duplicate copies of my important data in case of a hard-disk failure or crash. In this article, I will review an excellent and professional grade backup, restore and synchronization software called Handy Backup. I have previously tested some tools like Sync Toy, which is a very simple and light tool and words well. But Handy backup has loads of options and features to take almost all kind of backups and it can run scheduled backup operations.

It also supports Incremental Backup mode, Differential Backup mode and Synchronization mode, in short it can fulfill almost all kind of data backup needs.

Above all, its simple and easy to use, I am really impressed by the ease of creating a backup task. This is how it looks at the first screen:

You can create a simple backup activity in a few steps which are detailed enough so that they take care of al important aspects of the backup and simple enough that one can use them without confusion. Click on New task and a Wizard will start with about 8 to 10 steps depending on the type of backup you want.

I had setup a backup of the photographs and videos I shoot with my phone and keep them inside a folder. For that I selected Folder Backup option on step 2 of the New Task Wizard of the Handy Backup.

Next screen will ask you what do you want to backup, by default it was set to Incremental backup which seems appropriate for backup of photographs. If you want to backup at the level of parts of changed file, you can use differential backup, but differential backup is not appropriate for image and video files, it is more apt for text and code files.

Next it asks me the location of the destination folder where it will put backup files. As a good practice, it should be either an external media, drive or another physical hard drive from the one you are using. You can also use FTP and online backup services, but don’t use the same physical hard drive even on a different partition because if the drive fails in future, you loose both copies of your data. I selected an external drive for backup.

Next screens asks you about using file compression and encryption of data. Its not a very good idea to use compression if you have small amount of data and a large space to backup the same, because un-compressed data can be accessed and browsed more freely and easily compared to the compressed data. Encryption option is really important if the data you are backing up is too personal or its confidential. Since I did not need compression or encryption, I just left the options un-checked.

The next screen allows you to set-up a schedule for the backup you are creating, this way, Handy Backup will automatically backup the data on a regular basis without needing your attention.

If you select to schedule the backup, it will ask you how frequent to backup.

It will also ask you the start day, date and time on basis of the interval you set.

Just name the backup and Finish the backup.

name the backup

The above process may look length, but it takes just a few minutes and saves a lot of time and energy later which is otherwise needed to backup data manually over and over again. I found the steps very easy to follow and it worked like a charm for me. After the backup was created, the files were properly backed up on an external USB hard drive.    backup-in-progress

This is how it looks in the explorer Window, it will contain backup folders / files along with a backup.hdi file. This backup.hdi file is the file which is maintained by Handy Backup for its monitoring and scheduling purposes. It contains the backup information and schedule. Do not remove this file as the backup may not work properly later on if you remove it. There are Professional and Server editions of the Handy backup available for additional functionalities over the standard editions which includes – database backup and server backup
