Trouble:
Sometimes a virus or some malicious script makes the hidden files and folders not visible even when it is explicitly enabled.
In this case even if the user enables the Show hidden files and folders in
Tools > Folder options > View menu, Hidden files and folder does not become visible.
Lets see how to fix it.
Fix:
First and foremost is the point that the user has enabled the Show hidden files and folder
1. Go to Tools > Folder options. This will show a folder options menu.
2. Go to View tab and select the option “Show hidden files and folder”
The hidden files and folders are displayed by this method normally. But in case some virus or script is preventing the hidden files and folders from being visible, follow the below steps:
1. Go to your Start > Run, type regedit and press enter. This will open registry editor.
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folde r\Hidden\SHOWALL
Updated on 9th FEB 2008:
Note:
DELETE the value CheckedValue in the right window if it already there and type is REG_SZ
Now create a new DWORD value again with the same name CheckedValue.
3. Double click the value called CheckedValue, and modify its data value (DWORD Value) to 1 (0×00000001) . Close registry editor after this.
Updated on 9th FEB 2008:
If still folder options is reverted back to don’t show hidden files and folders then it could be due to some virus still in action.
Navigate to the following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden
NOHIDDEN
In the NOHIDDEN folder, select CheckedValue and set the value to 1
4. Go to Tools > Folder options. This will show a folder options menu.
5. Go to View tab and select the option “Show hidden files and folder”
The above fix to the trouble came from one of our readers Chris under a virus post comment.
Thanks Chris.
Note: If above solution does not work for you, make sure to make your system completely virus free by updating your anti-virus and running a complete scan. You can do a free scan using Kaspersky Virus Removal tool here.

hi…
what exactly needed is a good antivirus which wil be able to detect and resolve the problem of “show hidden files”..so could you please suggest a good one..!! plzz
hi
i had tried all the options what you had suggested in the above passages, then also i am not able to view my hidden files. please can you help me out
OMG! Thank you so much guys! Followed the first suggestion and it worked… (i was sweating bullets going into the registry though, hate that place… XD).
I think i aquired a virus on my system, and i cleaned it all off…. Wat the virus seemed to do was to create an “autorun.inf” file on all my drives, and once i accessed them it would run. After scanning my pc with AVG (…. yes i use AVG…dont laugh >.<..) it got rid off the viruses… but i still couldnt access me hard drives normally.
I went in to safe mode, use cmd prompt and i veiwed the hidden “autorun.inf” on each drive and forced deleted them (type “help” and u’ll see how)… and after restarting i could access my drive normally…. now for my flash drive XP
hi..
i have ther same hidden files problem but whats worse is that i can’t run REGEDIT from RUN as the message “your access has been restricted by the administrator” comes.
i tried from system 32 as wwell but with same results. i am the administrator for my computer with all rights and privilages. still i cant do anything… please help me out
I removed a trojan virus from my computer by kaspersky recently. After that many of my folders have become hidden. When I check show hidden Files and Folders and also I check show protected operating system files I become able to see all hidden folders!!!! How to fix this?
@ ez
If you don’t wish to see the operating system files like System Volume Information , Recycled, etc.. then simply check the option to “Hide protected operating system files”.
Many thanqs to trouble fixers
the solution is worked for Show all files option
-Arun
thanks! you saved me from re-installation of windows.

Now delete d “CheckedValue” n recreate it dword type with value as 1.
that’s it
Hi buddy,
Sometimes back I have got a strange problem in my networked computers. Of course, there are all sorts of virus in my computers ranging from New Folder.exe to Amvo.Exe and so on. But this time unusual one is happening with my computer.
Whenever I create Folders by using File *** New *** Folder command. The folder property automatically changes to Application having .exe extension, whenever I hover the mouse over it.
All my photos and documents which are under it becomes unusable since I cannot see the particular folder in Adobe photoshop and others. It has got an icon exactly like the normal folder. Incase of New folder.exe, I know the icons are similar but still we can see the difference.
I kill the process named services.exe running under C:\documents & settings……. and the problem seems to go away.
Any further solution will be greatly appreciated. Thanks….
fix to amvo.exe and disabled taskmanager
amvo.exe
————
the problem is due to a worm .
open a new text document and paste the following
then rename the file as file.bat (the extension should be .bat)(make sure that tool>folder options>view>hide extentions for known file types is unchecked)
then execute that file after that
in no time restart your computer

Did the task of setting HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden\NOHIDDEN CheckedValue set to 1, and I had a very strange reaction: the effects of “Do not show Hidden Files” and “Show Hidden Files” in the Folder Options BECAME REVERSED, so now, selecting “Do not show Hidden Files” WILL SHOW the Hidden Files, and selecting “Show Hidden Files” will hide them. Anyone else experience that?
