How To Fix "Please Insert a Disk into Drive" Error In Windows

by Rohit Khurana on October 10, 2008

Trouble:

We just got a quite common problem regarding pen drives, one of our reader Emmanuel Ayivi sent us a problem regarding pen drive detection.

When ever I insert my (4GB my flash) pen drive into my PC and any other PC I am
unable to open it. The message that am prompted with is “insert disk into drive”

As it’s clear from the message in quotes, this problems occur when you insert when your removable drive to your USB port, it detects your removable drive but throws an error window saying – Please Insert a Disk into Drive \ Device when you try to open it.

insert-a-disc-into-drive

One of the most possible cause of this issue when you have a removable drive which try to get a drive letter which is already reserved.

This could happen due to the default behavior of Windows XP when you may have e: drive assigned to a network drive or other hardware drive and removable pen drives tries to occupy e: drive as drive letter.

Fix:

In order to resolve the issue, use the following methods given below:

Method 1:

Insert the removable disk in the removable drive before you start your computer. But in this case, make sure that the first boot device in BIOS is not USB drive, else computer may not boot at all.

Method 2:

1. Log in as Administrator account in windows or any other account with administrative privileges

2. Insert your removable disk into the USB port.

3. Click Start, now right click on my computer and select manage

windows-xp-manage-option

4. Now, click Disk Management

windows-xp-disk-management

5. Right click on your removable drive partition and select Change Drive Letter and Paths under Disk Management ( you can find your drive easily through size )

change-the-drive-letter-of-removable-drive

6. Change the drive letter some other drive letter like X: or Z: which is not reserved by some other drive on windows.

7. That’s it! Done.

The drive just says ‘no media’ Have you got a fix? I can see the properties which says 0 space written, 0 space available. I can change the drive letter but it does not solve the problem.

EC January 17, 2009 at 8:23 am

Not working because the removable disk drive will not show in the Disk Managment window.

i have try 2nd method but i didn’t get solution,
please help me !!

Derron August 11, 2009 at 5:22 pm

None of the solutions worked for me either. Changing the drive name didn’t do any good. (This only works if you had that drive letter is mapped; or used by some other drive already. I tryed it anyway and sure enough it does not work.) When I tryed to reformat, it thinks it’s a CD or DVD ROM Drive… and won’t format it because computer thinks there is no disk (CD or DVD) in drive. Still looking for ways to fix it… if it’s even possible. Please post solution if anyone finds a way!

Harsha September 6, 2009 at 6:48 pm

saintgemer September 10, 2009 at 10:46 pm

guy try to used the formating option of your flash disk
on the computer management,

Dave October 8, 2009 at 10:48 am

My experience with fixing this, nothing worked until I tried changing the drive letter. This change took, but I still got an error. But I left the drive plugged in and after about half an hour, something must have timed out and presto, I got the popup asking me what I wanted to do with the drive (open files, play media, etc) that I always get on insertion.

Note, once you have the drive working, write something to it and do a proper disconnect, otherwise you may have to repeat this fix next time you plug it in.

Sanjeev October 12, 2009 at 3:41 am

Hi All, recently I’ve purchased HP 8GB v155w pendrive, from last one day I’m facing the same problem as mentioned by most of users.
I’ve workout something to diagnose this issue and feel due to some reason (either hardware or virus) it’s file system got currupted (something like MBR corrupt in HDD).
Whenever I inster my Flash Drive, XP show “USBest USB2FlashStorage USB Device” hardware found and installed successfully, but when my Flash Drive was working fine, it was showing “HP V155W USB Device” found. Same was showing if I’m going to Device manager and selecting Generic Device and checking the Properties. so it seems, it’s internal default file system got corrupted and Manufacturer can only do something as there no such utility I found to fix this issue.

Sanjeev October 15, 2009 at 9:15 pm

yesterday, I went to HP Service center and shown them the usb flash driver, they have checked it and provided me a new Pack.

AgentSil October 18, 2009 at 2:50 am

just dump it and buy a new pendrive.. im just bought 8gb kingston pendrive and it was ended sumthg like this error..

im forced to buy a new one..:(

indian_volcano January 11, 2010 at 6:16 am

wow awesome THANKS so much

Lankas January 15, 2010 at 7:17 pm

Its because the file system is corrupt. Its not in all cases that opening throws out the error captured in the graphic above is a drive letter conflict. If you get to a lower version, may be 98 which will certainly manage to open.. you can format your pen drive to restore the file system. This has worked for me before, but this time around.. I don’t know where I can get Win 98.

ed January 28, 2010 at 12:53 am

i was getting the “please insert disc” message on my LAPTOP and i fixed it as follows:

1. Purchase an “optical lens cleaner”, they are a disc with a series of tiny brushes.
2. According to the instructions, you must insert the disc and press “play” but of course, your drive will not recognize that there is a disc in the drive!
3. take a clean finger and gently turn the cleaning disc on it axis for a minute.
4. push the disc into the drive and if you have my luck, it will start to play!

THE PICTURE HELPS A LOT.!!

THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oglasifwd July 14, 2010 at 5:43 pm

Just sent email today to Transcend people.

Their online recovery tool is amazing. I was not only able to restore the functionality of the USB drive but also to restore absolutely all the data. It seems that tool gets forced access to USB, solves corrupted controlling sectors which means that files are left physicly.

Of course if first option will not work you have then option 2 to format drive and erace all the files (that is only if you want to save USB without data – but it is always good to choose the above option first).

Thanks Transend once again for this amazing fix.

WHEN I GOES TO DISK MANAGEMENT THERE IS ONLY C: , D: , E: , F: THERE IS NOT H: ANY WHERE PLZ TELL ME WHAT TO DO.

Steve July 18, 2010 at 6:22 pm

A problem that some people have with the same error message is that the pen drive is noticed, but it cannot connect with the SD card. I have done this with an external one (SD Can be put into the USB) and it worked when i used a different (but same type of) USB. You will unfortunately have to get rid of it, or take out the memory and put it in a different USB (not recommended).

Having same problem with usb stick. Change letter didn’t help.

nIRAJ August 23, 2010 at 1:15 pm

OK, But what if the pendrive is shown as distk1 in “Disk Management”, it also has a drive letter that has not been reserved, it is shown as “no media” and I can’t see any partition. Please guide. Has the chip been corrupted.

oglasifwd August 23, 2010 at 2:29 pm

It seems that previous comments have to be checked on the section PREVIOUS COMMENTS and that will confuse the users. For all the new users on board check the description supplied by Girish before in PREVIOUS COMMENTS to solve your problems.

Skeptic August 26, 2010 at 8:13 am

I tried the methods described above, but they didn’t work for me.

However, I have a program Lexar Image Rescue 3 that can read the files. Unfortunately, when they wrote that program, they only thought of rescuing image files.

So, if Lexar Image Rescue can read those files, other competent USB drive readers should be able to do that too. The question is, who else produces tools like Lexar Image Rescue 3 that rescue all files.

Hvine August 26, 2010 at 11:52 pm

Hi There,

It didnt work for me either. The problem started while trying to format my laptop. I also tried by format via external hard disk but doesnt work. Actually, its worst. Please help urgent.. I need to finish this before saturday.

Many Thanks,

Hasvine

Hey,
I faced the same problem , let me explain it how it all started:
I was installing the fresh Windows version (XP) on my machine & My pen drive was already connected.
I had chosen the option of formatting the C:\ Drive & Pen drive (just by mistake).
After the successful installation of windows I found that my pen drive is detected by am getting the same error “Please insert the ……”, it showing Actual Size, used Size & Free size all of them of 0 Bytes.
So, my first concern is whether the above specified method will work in my case also? & second when we purchase any pen drive does it have some software already installed in pen drive which was required ?

I Have Inserted My Usb In to Computer The Option Is Given that Please Insert the Disk In Drive K: kindally tell Me Proper Solution Of THis PROBLUM I Am Very Thank Full To You

hamid December 17, 2010 at 10:30 pm

I recently bought a 4Gb USB stick and initially it seemed to work fine. However, one day when I plugged it into my laptop, when I tried to access it, it came up saying “Please insert a disk into Drive E:”
I unplugged it and plugged it in again, and it seemed to load correctly – all the correct messages came up in the baloon on the bottom right hand corner of the screen (i.e. it said “this device is ready to use” etc).
The light on the USB stick is on, and I can see it in my computer, but I can not access it as it gives me the same error message. I have tried to google this and I have played around with the drivers in device manager, but to no avail. I am using XP Pro (SP2) and usually have no problems with USB devices.

Gaurav December 24, 2010 at 12:21 pm

I was not able to find “Change Drive Letter and Paths” as shown in the picture above. Please let me know if there is any other way to sort that problem out.
Thanks

Unfortunately when you get this error message, more than likely your flash drive is toast. Changing any settings in windows doesn’t help. It is worth a shot, but don’t get your hopes up.

eddie February 9, 2011 at 1:29 pm

worked for me. One thing you might be overlooking is if it shows
“unallocated” you have to right-click and choose “simple ……’ , change drive letter to x,
and finish wizard. And wait for a couple of seconds to allow it to do its thing.

Doug April 15, 2011 at 8:57 pm

I had this problem and tried all the fixes to no avail. One piqued my interest as it said the issue was related to a CD/DVD writer, which I (thought) did not have. Turns out I did… I had installed the entire Rimage software suite (no other way load the printer driver according to Rimage Support) in order to be able to use an Everest CD/DVD thermal color printer. In addition to the driver, is also installed writing software for their Producer series of duplicators. Once I uninstalled the software, the problem went away. Uber-specific to my situation, I know… but if I had the issue, perhaps someone else will as well. If none of the other “fixes” help you, search for ANY software that may have access to CD/DVD writing and uninstall.

ConnieD May 26, 2011 at 6:47 am

I have a similiar problem: XP Pro SP3.

It neither reads nor writes to the floppy drive.

I tried to format a floppy disk, purchased formatted, just in case.
I got this message:

There is no disk in Drive A:
Insert a disk and then try again.

I installed a floppy drive.
It shows in the BIOS Drive A: 1.44
It shows in My Computer 3 1/2 Floppy (A:)

It does not show in Computer Management>Disk Management.

I have C, D, E, F hard drives.
I also have CD-ROM O DVD (G:) that show.

I have the latest BIOS update for the motherboard.

The motherboard has a floppy controller.
I put the pink stripe in position 1 on the floppy drive.
I inserted the power plug.
I did the reboot.

I do not have a clue how to have this installation function properly.

ConnieD May 26, 2011 at 8:33 am

I had the identical symptoms installing a floppy drive.

I decided I would make the computer read the floppy drive by listing it as one of the boot devices. I made it third, after hard drive and CDROM.

It did! The light lit up.

Once booted up into Windows XP Pro SP3, I was able to write a .doc to Drive A. I was able to double-click and see what was on the floppy disk.

In “Computer Managment” I do not see Drive A.

I say, if the BIOS in your computer allows you to select your device to be added in the boot sequence, maybe this will help.

NOTE: I had updated the BIOS and I noticed that the new BIOS allows for every sort of device being designated as a boot device.

Johny Pitbull May 26, 2011 at 7:18 pm

chugs September 23, 2011 at 5:54 am

Hi All,

After experiencing this issue all morning I discovered a fix that you can all do that software recovery from Transend failed to do (or changing the mounted drive letter).

With my Lexar Retrax drive there is a small LED that indicates data transfer/connection. What I noticed is that when inserting the drive fully into the USB port that the LED would not light up. I tried multiple USB ports but the same error continued. Although Windows 7 noticed a device that it didn’t properly mount it despite see it as a storage device (it installed the default drivers which are probably meant for mounting a floppy/diskette drive to a USB port, hence the request to insert a disk).

Consequently it was inaccessible and the “Please insert a disk” error was shown whenever attempting to access the ‘drive icon – f:’.

However I did recall from problems with this USB on another computer that it was very sensitive to how far you inserted it into the USB port.

So carefully I inserted the drive in, millimetre by millimetre until I saw the LED light up. At one point the drive lit up but did not unlit/flash. So starting again millimetre by millimetre I got it in. It gave its customary several flash and bam instantly windows 7 detected it as a Lexar retrax drive and I was back up and running moving the data.

On a side note this is the lesson you all pay for when you buy a cheap and nasty USB drive.

IF CHANGING THE LETTER & REGISTRY FIX DOESN’T WORK, FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Plug in your USB drive and Right click on my computer and then select ‘Manage’.
2. Choose ‘Disk Management’ from the left side pane.
3. Right click on your particular USB drive and select ‘Create partition’.
4. Choose ‘primary’ , click ‘next’ you will see a format screen, default is FAT32, no need to change.
5. Complete the format. Done!
Hope it helps.

NEW SOLUTION! Here is how I ended up getting it to work:

since I was unable to select the flash drive on the disc manager (was grayed out as unreadable), I changed my dvd to the T drive (anything later in the alphabet would be fine). reboot. then the flash was able to work as the E drive, which was the old dvd’s drive letter.

Shekhar June 1, 2012 at 1:59 am

okay..my solution deals with absolutely no technical stuff..all u gotta do is..
1) Insert a pen-drive that your PC detects
2) Then insert the pen-drive having the problem

That’s it..browse and enjoy..

This set of instructions assisted me in finding the right answer for making my thumb drive usable again. I would get the “Please insert a disk into the removable disk ()” each time that I clicked on the disk. So I tried the instructions given in this read but the disk partition was not listed nor readable. I was not able to read the disk nor could I follow the instructions because the changing of the drive letter was not an option when I clicked on the disk management. So I decided to use the “Create a new simple volume” option and followed the instructions there. With this option I was finally able to format the disk though it did not save my disk information but it did make my drive readable and usable again. I am happy because I did not have to lose the disk though I lost the information stored in it.

I thank you for helping me to find the answer to making my drive usable again!

The drive just says ‘no media’ can you fix it, I can see the properties which says 0 used bytes, 0 free bytes. I can change the drive letter but it does not solve the problem. And in properties not shared the Network Path??????please send
