I have done this

1. Open Start >> Run or press window key + r

2. Type “services.msc” (without quotes) and Click OK , this will open services window.

3. Right click on Automatic Updates Service and select Stop.

4. After the service is stopped, press window key + r

5. Type “%windir%\SoftwareDistribution” (without quotes) and press enter.

6. Open the Download folder and delete all contents of the Download folder.

7. Close the window, press Window Key + r ( or Open Start >> Run )

8. Type “services.msc” (without quotes) and Click OK

9. Right click on Automatic Updates Service and select Start.

10. That’s it Done

>>> NOW ICON REAPPEARED

I had a client with many viruses that disabled Windows Update and had corrupted already downloaded updates. With this tip I was able to clear the downloaded information and re-run windows Update to re-download the files.

Thanks!

after doing this you can also disable automatic updates if you don't want to be bothered anymore by that pesky icon on your taskbar and stop it from downloading/installing or even notifying you!.. heheheh!..

to do this..

>go to control panel..
>doubleclick on "security center" icon..
>once inside, click on "automatic updates" under the "Manage security settings for:" and turn it off..
>after that, under "resources" on the security center, click on "Change the way Security Center alerts me"..
>uncheck "automatic updates" and there you go!!!

http://www.petri.co.il/hide_updates_windows_vista.htm

"The solution lays in the right-click...right-click the update you want to hide, and select Hide Update..."

I did this, and after stopping the updates service, the icon disappears from the system tray. After rebooting, or restarting the service, the icon reappears, and they are the same updates. If I check the Download folder in the %windir%\SoftwareDistribution directory, it's empty. I don't want the updates it is trying to install. One of them is the sp1 update for MSOffice, which I don't use, and the other appears to be a tool for removing Paradox's Vista Ultimate Crack.(or some other product activation bypass crack) I don't have any cracks installed on my machine, but I still don't want that update. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
