Trouble:

One of readers, Raj Kumar, reported a problem which I have heard from some of my friends as well. He Says: “I have problem viewing icons on desktop, unable to see icons on desktop” The desktop background appears blank with no icons on it (as shown in the image below).

no-desktop-icons

The problem is related to disappearing of desktop icons and task bar on windows startup. In some cases even when the user tries to open windows explorer by new task-option in task-manager the explorer flashes for a second but doesn’t start properly.

Let’s see how can we solve this problem.

Fix:

There are different types of methods which you can follow to repair your windows to show desktop icons properly.

Normally this problem of disappearing of desktop icons caused by the virus called called F-Nimda which creates a file named bxomebc.exe which aborts the windows explorer from starting. But this problem could be due to the corrupted registry also.

Let’s discuss the possible solutions one by one.

Firstly before following any of the methods given below download the F-Nimda virus removal tool.

Method 1:

1. Start Windows XP, after starting press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to launch task manager.
2. Click File menu and select “New Tasks (run…)”
3. Now type CMD and click OK, this will open command prompt.

4. Type following command on command prompt:
Reg add “HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RpcSs” /v ObjectName /t REG_SZ /d LocalSystem and press enter.

Note: You can also try downloading this registry entry in order to re-enable the showing of your desktop icons. Download from here, double click and press OK button to merge it in registry.

Method 2:

Start Windows XP, after starting press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to launch task manager.
2. Click File menu and select “New Tasks (run…)”
3. Now type CMD and click OK,this will open command prompt.

4. Type cd %SystemRoot% and press enter.

5. Now rename the file Shdocvw.dll file by typing ren shdocvw.dll shdocvw.old and press enter.

6. Restart windows.

Method 3:

1. Download this shell fix registry settings from here , merge it into the registry by double clicking the downloaded file and press OK.

2. Download process explorer from here and run it.

3. Locate a process called bxomebc.exe in process explorer, end this process and delete the file from its location (You will get to know the file path by taking mouse over the process).

4. Restart your computer.

We hope at least one of fixes provided above will help you fix the trouble.

Hello

This may happen if the explorer file and user login file is corrupted.
Connect the harddisk on another computer as slave then copy the explorer.exe (typically in C:\windows directory) and Userinit file(typically in c:\windows\system32 directory)

After replacing both the files, restart your computer and the issue might be resolved.

This issue also will be resolved by installing K7 Total security after updating–do a scan in safe mode.

Hi guys,

I found the cause of the misteriously disappearing Windows 7 desktop icons and the reason why Show desktop icons now and then gets unchecked.

It’s INFRARECORDER !! Try for yourselves, when you start Infrarecorder and close it again, go have a look at “Show desktop icons”, it is unchecked (but the icons are still there). Check it on again and start Infrarecorder…. it is unchecked again.

This Windows 7 “bug” is irritating me since the beginning and now I found the cause: It’s Infrarecorder which is causing this problem.

Test it, please let me know and spread the news.

U star! After trying lots of other fixes (Virus/Malware removal, taskbarplus, registry fixes, reinstall XP SP3, System Restore, etc…) and *still* being faced with only the Desktop Wallpaper and My Document window, I tried your method1, and it worked. tyvm!

Today I had laptop with the same problem, most of the time icons and task bar wont show up, and only sometimes they would load up normally. After trying every solution and failing I scanned the drive with Avira System Rescue CD and found that C:\Windows\system32\pci.sys was a virus. I deleted the file and expanded the original file from the Windows XP CD and everything is working now. Maybe this can help you. Something funny is that sfc /scannow didn’t fix this issue.

I had a similar problem on XP.
Windows start, but only the Desktop wallpaper is visible.
And “My Documents” folder would be open, but Explorer.exe wasn’t running!
I had to start Explorer.exe via Task Manager.

In the Registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon

Look for an Entry called “Shell.
It’s Value should be “explorer.exe”.
“Shell”=”explorer.exe”

Just that.
Nothing else.
Mine had “crss…..” at the end.
I deleted it, and rebooted.

That worked.
