Increase Windows PC Performance By Adjusting Prefetch and Superfetch

Are you facing issues with the speed of your system? Does it frustrate you when it takes long time to open? If these questions are bothering you then don’t worry, because now we have got a solution for these issue and you may try it to increase the system speed to some extent. Windows operating system comes with two functionalities known as Prefetch and Superfetch. These two functionalities are basically present in order to use caching to speed things up in Windows computer but no one really bothers about it. But, it is quite important to know what is it all about especially if you have a SSD drive in your system.

So, first of all let us briefly discuss these two functionalities and then we will see that how these functionalities can be used to increase the speed as already mentioned. Basically, Prefetch is available in Windows XP, Vista and 7 while Superfetch is only available in Vista and Windows 7 to be précised. If we look further then we may observe that these two functions aim to reduce applications startup time as well as the operating system boot time by preloading it in memory which may help the user. However, in some of the cases where you have a solid state drive (SSD) or the system has less than 2GB of RAM, then you might want to consider tweaking prefetch and superfetch to improve the overall performance for your system. So, for this we are going to discuss a small utility which may prove helpful for the user.

TweakPrefetch is basically a small, easy to use, useful and a freely available application that makes it all easy for the user to configure prefetch and superfetch as already mentioned. It comes up with a pretty simple user interface that displays the options clearly on how you would like to tweak the prefetch and superfetch for your Windows system and that too in a very simple way. It gives you options where you can either enable the fetching for applications only, boot only or the default applications & boot only. One thing which must be noted here is that disabling of Prefetch, Superfetch and its service can only done when Advanced Controls is selected from the Options menubar present in the interface.

So, you may download the utility from the link given below and can easily install it in your system. But, after installing and running it, if you feel that your computer is slow after tweaking the prefetch, you can always revert it back to the default “Application & Boot” from the program.
