Trouble:

Few days back, when I configured Gtalk on my new laptop, I could not chat via Gtalk because the microphone was not working. We have written vista microphone problem some time back, but this problem is focussed on Gtalk voice chat. This problem can be checked by looking at the microphone status bar as you speak. See the snapshot below:

The bar did not move even on speaking loud into the microphone. In this post I will share the fix of this problem with you.

Fix:

For this, click on the settings link on the top right of Gtalk Window as below:

google-talk-settings

This will open up a settings window as shown below, on right hand side, click on Audio, this will show you Input – microphone or headset options . Under this drop-down menu, select the mic you are using. If you are not sure, which mic you are using, change them one by one and check if it starts to work, by seeing the progress bar.

audio-microphonr-settings

Similarly there is option to change the output – headset or speakers options. Set the correct output and press Ok.

gtalk-speaker settings

After this settings, my voice chatting worked absolutely fine.

Hi
I have internal microphone on my laptop and in that drop-down-menu there is only one choice: “default device”. I am sure about my mic, it works correctly with other software. how can I fix its problem with Google Talk?
Thanks!

I faced the same problem. I use laptop’s internal mic to talk. But after installing gtalk suddenly even sound recorder does not work, also other party does not hear me when i call by Gtalk.

Early resolution I did was: Reinstalling audio/sound drivers, and it worked.

But a few days later also I faced this problem suddenly while calling using gtalk.

Simple resolution that always works for me:
1. From task bar open you audio/sound symbol.
2. Go to Options > Properties
3. Select radio button before (.) Recording
4. Just click ‘OK’
5. The selected option should be ‘Digital Mic’ whih gets changed to ‘Microphone’ and it reates problem to detect your sound from internal microphone.
So keep it ‘Digital Mic’

It works then.

Strange?

You know whats strange = this did Work.

I say strange because I spent endless hours (well maybe possibly more like 2) tramping through the highly unhelpful Google help/faq. Then, even more time through lots of other detailed online forums with people helping other people (who usually had older OS’s than my Win 7) and nothing worked, or was easy do to trying to figure out how to follow the outdated to me instructions. Finally, your extremely simple & well laid out article did the trick. (Though I would swear I had done nearly if not exactly the same thing earlier, on my own, before trudging through all the online mess; but as it was directly after following your advice & when I was on the verge of giving up entirely, that it all came together I happily give you the credit.)

Thank you!
p.s. my only recommended addition to your article would be one extra picture showing users how to/where to find/click the “Verify your settings” button/link under the current Gchat settings version as this is what clued me in to the miracle that had finally occurred!
