Windows 8 is a very different looking interface compared to the older Windows versions up to Windows 7 which all had a Start button in Windows. This interface has been deliberately kept this way for freshness, simplicity and ease of using the same interface on a touch screen tablet device as well as a normal desktop or laptop PC. However, being a new operating system interface, it does confuse the newbie users who start using a very different looking operating system. This is not strikingly a different environment like a Linux or Mac OS, but it is quite new. In this article, I will share some very basic ways to manage tiles on the Windows 8 Metro User Interface or UI.

How To Remove A Tile From Windows 8 Metro Start Screen or UI
To make any change to a tile in Windows 8, simply right click on a tile, for example in below screenshot, I have right clicked on the Messaging App on Windows 8 UI. As soon as you right click, there are two things that happen, first is that a tick mark symbol is added along with a border on the tile to highlight the selected tile which you can see below, second thing is that you will start to see additional options which rise from the bottom of the screen on Windows 8 Metro Screen.

To remove a tile or App, you should first make up your mind whether you need to remove it from the UI and keep it on the computer for later use or you want to completely remove it (uninstall from PC). If you want to use it once in a while, click on the option which says Unpin from start, this will remove it from the UI but will not uninstall the applications. But if you are sure that you don’t want to use this application for a very long time, it is better to uninstall it and remove it from the PC. If future, if you ever need it again, you can re-install the application to use it. I just unpinned it from the Start screen. So you can see one missing tile or empty tile space on the screen below.

How To Resize A Tile From Windows 8 Metro Start Screen or UI
In Windows 8, you can keep a tile large (approximately twice the size of a small square time) or small which is square in shape. To change the size of a tile, simply right click on the tile and click Smaller (to reduce the size), as you can see in the snapshots, the Calendar App is reduced in size on the Windows 8 Start Screen.

When you click on the “Smaller” option the tile reduces to half the original large size. If you want to enlarge or increase the size of a tile, simply right click on the small tile and click “Larger” option.
NOTE : This feature may not work on all tiles as some tiles may not have graphics to support larger or smaller picture. For such tiles, these options (Smaller and Larger) do not display at all.
