Not able to open drives on hard disk by double click

by Abhishek Bhatnagar on January 14, 2008

Sometimes it happens in windows XP that you are not able to open drives on your hard disk. When you double clicking on the drives icons or right click on the drive>>explore in My computer ,the drive does not open.

This problem is generally caused by most of the viruses which infect windows XP system. They block or restrict your access to any of the drives.

But don’t worry this is not a big trouble it can be fixed easily.

Normally when a virus infects a windows system which causes a drive opening problem, it automatically creates a file named autorun.inf in the root directory of each drive.

This autorun.inf file is a read only ,hidden and a system file and the folder option is also disabled by the virus. This is deliberately done by the virus in order to protect itself.  autorun.inf initiates all the activities that the virus performs when you try to open any drive.

You have to just delete this file and restart your system to correct this problem.

Follow the set of commands below to show and delete the autorun.inf

1. Open Start>>Run and type cmd and press enter. This will open a command prompt window. On this command prompt window type the following steps.

2. type cd\

3. type attrib -r -h -s autorun.inf

4. type del autorun.inf

5. now type d: and press enter for d: drive partition. Now repeat steps 3 and 4. Similarly repeat step 5 for all your hard disk partition.

Restart your system and your trouble will be fixed.

If you find the above procedure difficult, the use:  Scan and Remove Suspicious ‘autorun.inf’ with Autorun Eater

Note: For all those who are not able to correct this problem, after following the above procedure can use a tool called Ravmon Virus Killer designed by Muhammad Abdullah, download it from here

Abhijeet February 23, 2008 at 6:38 pm

hi, my brother has a transcend mp3 player.
yesterday whn he attached it to the usb port, i faced the problem. i used nod32 v3 to get a trojan removed. but it didn’t do anything to the problem. then i opened folder options and enabled show os files and show hidden files.
it showed me autorun.inf, a dll file and another kind of file, named 610 (something like that), i deleted both and detached the mp3 player. after reconnecting it to the usb port it worked fine.
So people, remember to detach your pen drive after removing the malware and then reconnect

Rohit March 7, 2008 at 10:36 am

There must be an entry for autorun.inf which causes the message everytime.

Locate and delete autorun.inf or autorun.ini if any in the “c:”

Dear All,

One of my drive (G:) is not opening. When I double click the drive, it is showing “The disk in drive G: is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?”

But I have lots of important files in that drive. How can I open the same drive in Windows XP?. Any easy method is there?
Kindly let me know.

udaya August 19, 2009 at 4:42 am

There is an another way if you found this difuclt commands just go to tools in options tab select folder options in that select secound tab view and in that hidden files and folders in select show hidden files and folders now go to all drive that you have in yiou can see autorun.ini delete these files and restart your pc.

udaya August 19, 2009 at 4:46 am

there is another way also just go to you registery (select run from your windows button in desktop type regedit and press enter) in that search for mountpoints2 you will get 2 to 3 folders simply delete these it will work.

jasbir August 20, 2009 at 12:51 am

Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

Looks like E: on your computer is a DVD drive. Use this command only on the drive letter which are valid HDD partitionss drive letters. To know the same, open My computer Window and see what all drive letters are there for hard disk drives and pen drives etc.

Hi, I also have this problem but the thing is i could’nt open anything on my computer
i try clicking the icons even if i click the start tab still nothing is happening i was going to format the computer but the CD drv is not there on the boot sequence how can i do this? thanks!

elmer r valdez July 19, 2010 at 8:24 am

When you double Click it theres an Open With Dialog Box because there is an Autorun.inf file inside your hardrive or USB flash disk.

1. Type CMD at RUN from Start menu
at DOS Command Prompt Environment

2. type C: and press enter to explore your local Drive C
3. type DEL /F /AH AUTORUN.* then press ENTER

(it will remove all autorun variant on your drive C (such as autorun.inf, autorun.ico, autorun.png, autorun.exe ) note the “*” /F means force delete for read only autorun file, /AH delete autorun with hidden attributes.)
(it will create autorun.inf folder on your drive C, since there is an autorun folder on your drive C
autorun.inf file virus will get conflict with the autorun.inf folder therefore you will not be infected by autorun.inf again) autorun.inf file will not be created since there is a presence of autorun.inf folder on your drive.

I am not sure what the problem is but i am not able to view the conntents of my hard drive, i re installed XP which took a very loooong time. I had vista previously but it crashed and was not able to re-install it again as the system just refused to load the setup starting window. I left my system overnite to install XP and it worked out fine. But not able to view any of the drives.I formatted one of the drives to be sure it does not contain any viruses but still the drive did not open.
One more thing is that, my HDD are being displayed with a folder icon on them. I am not sure where the problem could be. TO be sure i flashed my BIOS also. But even that did not wrk out. Please suggest what actions i need to take. I would do all things in my power b4 going to any system repair guy.

Thanks in advance very much,
