Remove Write Protection On USB Pen Drive or Memory Card or iPod

by Rohit Khurana on December 21, 2008

In the past we had received so many problems from the readers who have a problem in copying files on their USB portable devices like pen drives, memory card and iPod etc.

According to the mails we had received about this problem, people have seen the following errors when their thumbs drives, memory card etc becomes write protected.

  • Cannot copy files and folders, drive is write protected
  • Cannot format the drive, drive is write protected
  • The disk is write protected
  • Remove write protection or use another disk
  • Media is write protected

Some times people say that suddenly their drive become write protected and they are not able to delete any files and folder on the drive and also not able to copy new files and folder to USB portable drive.

Let’s see how can you remove write protection on your portable devices like pen drives, memory cards, iPod and other USB mass storage devices.

Write Protection on any portable USB Device can be applied by the physical lock provided on the card adjuster or some times provided on the pen drives, so make sure to make your drive not write protected by moving the lock in right direction.

But even after moving the physical lock for write protection the problem can happen due to some virus action. This happens when some virus or script which applies the registry hack to make any drive write protect when connected to the computer, In that case follow the procedure below to remove write protection from your pen drive.

1. Open Start Menu >> Run, type regedit and press Enter, this will open the registry editor.

2. Navigate to the following path:

Note: If the registry key StorageDevicePolicies key does not exist, you will need to create it

Download this batch file called add.bat from here, and double click after download the key will be automatically added to registry.

3. Double click the key WriteProtect in the right pane and set the value to 0 in the Value Data Box and press OK button

4. Exit Registry, restart your computer and then again re-connect your USB pen drive on your computer. That is it, done.

In case you still find an issue, please leave a comment below.

After a lot of user comments telling that the above method does not work for them, we tell you another method which you can follow to solve the “Pen Drive is Write Protected” problem.

If the above method does not work for you, follow the below steps:

1. Copy all the important data from this drive to your computer because this method will format the drive and erase all the data on the pen drive.

2. Now download the Apacer Formatting Utility, Unzip this utility to a folder on your hard disk, preferably on a folder on desktop screen for easy access (Do Not Try To Save it on pen drive). Keep your pen drive plugged in, and double click on the Start.bat file in the folder where you unzipped the above utility. This will start formatting your pen drive, wait till the formatting completes and the LED on your pen drive stops blinking. Remove your pen drive after than and plug it in again.

The above two steps will solve the problem. If you still face the problem, follow the below steps:

1. Goto Start > Run, type cmd and press enter, this will open command prompt.

2. Type the following command on the command prompt replacing X with the drive letter of your pen drive.

The above two methods will help you fix the problem.

Note: For all those who are out of luck in fixing the problem with their portable drives, I would suggest you to get your drives checked or replaced by the manufacturer to fix it for you

After following your procedure, i am still facing this problem. Plz Help.

Misschiff January 2, 2009 at 12:17 pm

I have done this procedure too and it has had no effect. I also modified the other control sets ie Control Set 1 Control Set 2 etc so that all backups were modified using the same criteria. Still not working.

I was able to add files for a few seconds at one point (before) editing the registry) and then it stopped. In fact this worked effortlessly on the first computer I plugged it in to, but not on the second computer. I figured it was computer specific and a windows bug or something.

I would really love to know the solution

Is there another step for Vista? Tried but the key is not being added…

Mark January 4, 2009 at 8:10 am

Hi, I was having this problem with an 8GB SDHC card, the tab was in the UNLOCK position, but it never sat quite right in the card reader (when fully inserted it was at a bit of an angle), and today it decided to give me WRITE-PROTECT errors when trying to delete some files.
So the options were either buying a new card reader or cracking open this one for a ‘mechanical’ fix.
Luckily I found your page here. It made sense that there would be a way to disable the lock/unlock check in RegEdit.
So your method worked for me, using my SDHCcard, card reader with a bad write-protection detection switch, and WinXP SP2.
Just thought I’d add this comment after seeing so many comments on it not working out for them.

vishal January 5, 2009 at 11:48 pm

Oh i m very glad that i found solution from you and i will try it………
Thank you very very much……..

fernando January 7, 2009 at 11:08 pm

I have a problem. is the same nothing has changed after I did the whole procedure step by step and I rechecked and the value is still at 0 so does not look like that has anything to do with the write protection on the pen drive. I think this needs a very strong anti virus or a program made for this kind of virus that can find it and destroy it because I see the files but I cant delete them and my anti virus cant do anything to it.

sreekanth January 8, 2009 at 4:17 am

shafeeq January 12, 2009 at 10:50 pm

Thanks Rohit,
I tried your solution and restarted my PC to load the changes. But still the problem is not solved. It still says that “Access is Denied.” when i create a file. Is there any Registry Cache or System Cache which i am missing to delete?

I even tried re-installing the USB Driver and removed
INFCACHE.1 from C:\WINDOWS\inf folder. usbstor.pnf file is loading properly and is having current date as last modified date.

Previously it worked by deleting usbstor.inf.diabled and usbstor.pnf.disabled from windows/inf folder. I copied latest usbstor.inf file from c:\i386

Note:There is no Physical Write Protect key for my Pen Drive.

I tried your solution and it does not work.
My iPOD classic 80 gb can go to disk mode but iTunes can not restore it. It seems ok when restoring but iPOD does not come back after iTunes finishes the restore proceedure. The disk start and start and start but not run with the Apple logo stuck on the screen.
And HP Format Tool only shows dvice media write-protected.
Windows does not see the hard drive.
May be you have a another solution.
I will be glad if you have one.

Hey dude,

You are the MAN. You actually help me to fix my issue with IPOD. Damn I was pissed off for last 1 month. Everytime I had tried to synchronized my IPOD to my system Itune it failed with write protection with error message 1429.

I looked around to fix the issue on MAC forum but all the solution provided there was of no use.

Then I though the error message is all about my IPOD is stopping me from writing anything on the device and hence I reached for how to remove write protection from IPOD and I have found your link.

I just run your BAT file and then edit the DWORD value as per your instruction. Then I re-connected my IPOD and it get re-formated without any hitch.

Thanks a lot for sharing such beautiful information.

You are the MAN of moments 🙂

Note : Guys if you don’t able to utilize the information then I will recomended you to learn about registry by googling it.

The thread creator has tried his best through the forum. Its on us to have some background knowledge to fully utilized all the information mention here.

I have a similar problem with a transcend 2GB pendrive which suddenly has become in accessible just as the discussion in here goes.I tried everything you said and on the internet.
I even downloaded the format utility from neither ur suggested apache format utility is detecting the drive..though windows does. Moreover the drive can be formatted in safemode so the pendrive is definitely undamaged right… and I have changed the registry values aswell.
Please help me reincarnate my pendrive by suggesting a working solution. Is there any antivirus which can remove the virus from the pendrive?

Thankyou.. 🙂

-then black screen ll go for some times
-click to continue
– in the next window click UTILITY from menu bar then click on disk utility
-then choose ur pendrive in explorer left side

-format in “journeld-extended”
-again format in FAT

My micro SD still cannot used using d above method

huikong November 20, 2009 at 7:08 am

There is a write-protection tab on the sd card HOLDER. Every time you insert this into your PC or card holder, this tab slides to the write protect position. Either keep resetting, inserting & reinserting until it doesn’t slide or tape it down.
My problem solve finally
just becos the button

I’m facing this problem, the strange thing is, i can copy some files but then let’s say after 4% of the copying job, it stops and says about the write protection issue!

I’ve tried the chkdsk operation, and i got the following error:

The disk cannot be written to because it is write protected. Pelase remove the write protection from the volume in drive

when I tried to format the pen drive using the Apacer Formatting tool provided by you. I got this error:

Device Not Found/n
Press any key to continue . . .
My pendrive is 16 GB brand “pqi”

I really hope it’s back alive.

Hello everyone,

I am using Nokia N72 (Memory Card: 1GB MMC). I am using USB card reader to transfer any file to/from MMC (Windows Platform: Windows XP). But one day some problem occurred, it started showing error message that the memory card is write protected. I checked in my mobile, whether any password protection was made. But there was no such password protection. I tried to format it from PC, again it failed. Then I tried to format it with mobile itself, which worked. But still I am not able to copy to/from MMC and getting message that “Cannot copy (file name): The disk is write-protected. Remove the write-protection or use another disk.”

Please help me on this. Pls…………………………

willwarriorasp April 7, 2010 at 10:01 pm

i repaired a 8GB transcend JFV10 pen drive as follows:
1.)i tried the registry fix and set write protection to 0 but it didn’t work
2.)i tried low level formatting,it did not detect the pen drive
3.)so i downloaded the jet flash online recovery tool from and ran it,i set it to remove all the data, surprisingly the first time it didn’t work,i ran it again
,now i tried to open the pen drive n it showed that i had to format it,when i tried formatting it showed disk is write protected
4.)so now after applying the registry fix i restarted the pc n tried to format it…lo n behold it completed successfully
5.)i don’t know whether it works for other brands
operating system:windows 7
pen drive:transcend jfv10 8GB
file format:fat32
formatted capacity:7.46GB

Brother if it possible come to online and give me your system through remote control by “TeamViewer” tell me the possible timing My ID is…..

Gopinath September 8, 2010 at 9:46 am

Solution: 1
I know this problem is also occurring these days without this switch but not to worry. Just download this helpful software from here( and run it to execute a “low-level format” on the drive. This software is quite handy and may take few attempts to actually remove the error.

Solution :2
For that:
1. Run diskmgmt.msc in Run.
2. In the disk management window, select the pen drive, right click on it and click on Format.
3. Now choose the File System and Allocation Unit Size and do not check the boxes below.

Click OK and the drive will be reusable after this.

Solution : 3
( using which we can easily this write protection problem.

solution :4

Steps to make your drive Write Protected:

1. Open Registry Editor by typing regedit in Run dialog.

2. Navigate to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\

3. Find a sub key inside it named “StorageDevicePolicies”. If it does not exist there then we need to make it. Right click on “Control” key -> New -> Key. Name it “StorageDevicePolicies” without quotes.

4. Now right click on this newly created key and then click New -> DWORD value and name it as “WriteProtect”.

5. Modify this key and give it a value 1.

6. Click OK, and remember to restart the PC.

Now no more data can be transferred to the drive but to start using the drive again just give the “WriteProtect” key a value of 0 instead of 1 and restart the PC.

Thank you all! These are more or less the available resources to fix this problem. I am sharing my experience about the generation of this problem of ‘write protection’. Apart from the virus/trojan horse or physical lock, there is another culprit which has caused this problem to me almost on every occasion. YOU SHOULD TRY TO SAFE REMOVE YOUR PEN DRIVE/HARD DRIVE FROM YOUR PC ALWAYS! Whatever might be your hurry, pls do not force pull out the drive. On many occasions nothing will happen. But, once in 20 or 30 occasion you will find that your drive gets corrupt or ‘gets’ write protected after you have simply pulled out your pen drive out of the PC without going for safety removal. Thanks. Bye.

My Lgear 4gb usb disk write protected by itself, tried windows registry fix and lformat utility… none of them worked. However, with a despair try, I got it fixed by the following steps:
1. pluged in the usb disk to a mp4 player (my model: ainol v8000hdy)
2. deleted several files successfully in the mp4 file explorer (no write protected message pop up)
3. unpluged the usb drive from mp4 player, and pluged it into my pc (windows xp sp3)
4. copyed and deleted a test file successfully no more write protection
5. run chkdsk /f and fixed the corrupt file system, the usb drive was back to life since then.
That’s it. Good luck!

Justin January 10, 2011 at 7:45 pm

I spent 12 hours looking for a solution before finding this page, and I’d just like to say thanks.

My 8GB Maxell Xtractor USB Stick had become “Write Protected”, after I’d tried to batch-encode some media files contained on it. It wasn’t physically damaged, there’s no copy protect switch on the stick… Windows XP Pro was recognizing it as a removable drive, but was unable to format due to it being allegedly “write protected.” It still displayed the correct drive size, albeit as a RAW format and not FAT32.

I tried all kinds of different formatting utilities. I tried booting in Safe Mode with DOS Commands and running a format; it still appeared to be copy protected. Nothing worked…

So, I added the Registry entry as above, then amended the value to zero – still no luck.

Out of frustration, I decided to try the JetFlash Online Recovery tool – even though my stick was manufactured by Maxell…

Unbelievably, it worked. I don’t know how, but it worked. 🙂

If anybody still has the same problem, I’d urge you try the JetFlash Online Recovery tool. Just make sure you unplug any other external drives with the same storage capacity as your USB stick, because it identifies the USB stick by disk size.

A HUGE thankyou to willwarriorasp whom posted the link in their above comments – I could kiss you!!!

In windows7 place the cusrsor on the drive you want to remove the write protection. Just right click and after that click on the property than a dialogue box will appear and youneed to click on security option. Place the cursor on users and click on edit option. Again one dialogue box appears and you just need to mark right against full control, modify and write but do remember only do those things under allow option colomns…….It really works guys……….. Even you can use this option for memory cards.

Neil.Drew February 7, 2011 at 11:38 pm

hello friends, i have a disk2go pendrive which is telling me that it is write protected. I initially had about 3Gb of files on it but they were only readable. I couldn’t delete or copy files to the pen drive either so i tried to format it. But windows tells me that, it is write protected and that i should use a different disk. I have tried various utilities but still wont work. Can anyone help me out. I would be very grateful and God would really bless whoever is willing to help.
Drive details:
size – 16Gb
model- disk2go silver

Nvidia Geforce Intel April 27, 2011 at 11:12 pm

Eject the Pen drive and put it back 6 times continuously or throw in a very force. This is to erase the current data. And THE Next time when you put it back windows will ask for format. It Will Surely fix the problem.I have tried.

Oyagi May 11, 2011 at 9:11 pm

Allright, tried everything available in here and everywhere. It not working, but I find a simple step to at least ‘save’ the data
1. Eject the troublesome USB (right click, eject. Not safely remove)
2. Unplug it, and plug it again.
3. Try to copy/delete anything. If failed, try step 1-2 again. (I tried 7 times to succeed)

It not entirely fix the disk, but it ‘trick’ the disk protector, allow me to copy and delete file below 150 MB (disk protection still interrupt, thought)

If anyone can help for a full restore, tell me please

I have had this problem come up on 3 of my flash drives, 2 of which are SanDisk brand. The registry fix worked for the SanDisk drives but not the other. After reading through this thread I cannot believe this problem still persists after 3 years! (since the original post).

There *must* be an answer to this somewhere as it seems to affect a variety of media of different sizes. It suggests some undocumented quirk of Windows that has yet to be uncovered. I hope to solve this one some time soon…

IT_MAN August 23, 2011 at 8:24 am

Although there is one problem: I have hidden files.

In order to remove write protection, they must be unhidden (The hidden files do not get write protection removed through this process).

theres nothing happen to my USB CDR KING 8Gb….i want to format but the problem is write protected again and again

Shiraz September 2, 2011 at 3:42 am

Second method worked for me. I think the problem started when i used my flash drive on a Linux machine. It has been giving me problems ever since. I downloaded the apacer utility and ran it, but I couldn’t tell if the drive was formatting or not as the LED remained solidly lit at all times. I just gave it adequate time then removed it. Tried to reformat and it was ok. Before that, if I tried to format it gave me an error message that said the disk is write protected. Thanks for the assistance!!!

Do we need to change the setting of pen drive as well in order to disable the write protection.

I would really appreciate the help.

For those who are having trouble with the batch file, if it doesnt appear go to edit-> find -> type in storagedevicepolicies and you will be directed to the folder to continue

Dilip October 21, 2011 at 1:09 am

when we are use a Pen drive.. sometime we can’t paste or delete any content. it will say write protected. this will happen by virus attack. if we try to format the pen drive through any OS( windows, Linux), we can’t format it. it will say unmount volume in Linux. we can only read the items which are in pen drive. if we scan the pen drive with any anti-virus program it will find some viruses(sometime). but it can’t heal the viruses. so, how can format the pen drive… if anyone know pls reply…
Note:- if this happen to any pen drive it will create “open as a portable disk” in the right click menu.
so, tell me how to format those pen drives

Dilip October 21, 2011 at 1:11 am

when i try to format that pen drive it says…
device media is write protected.
so, what can i do?
there is no any lock switch. it is a pen drive not a player.
and also there is no any security or lock software in that pen drive. it’s a virus problem. i have got two pen drive with this problem.
so, what can i do?

Hi In windows 7 there is no Storage Device policies.Only policies are available and no bat file are install, tell me how i install the bat file.

toufic November 7, 2011 at 9:14 pm

I have try all three method but still my pen drive shows WRITE PROTECTED.

nemo November 9, 2011 at 6:22 am

Thank you so much!!!! The first method works perfectly to remove the write protection from my flashdrive!!
So for those of you who is having trouble locating the Storage Device Policies, you could try saving the add.bat file onto your desktop and then run it as adminstrator. You should have no trouble locating it afterward and just follow the steps given above.
Hopefully this will help some of you!!! 🙂

Gopal November 9, 2011 at 4:35 pm

Absolutlety perfect method u described. Well done !!! I come out from the write protection problems.

david November 10, 2011 at 12:38 pm

I successfully format back my pen drive ( write protected) after use your steps. Thank you very much.

D November 12, 2011 at 10:36 pm

Hi guys! Don’t forget, if you are using a memory card, that some of them have a little “switch” on the side for locking so just slide it up and it will work perfectly! It’s what I did and it worked after half an hour of brainstorming!
Good luck!

Nicky November 14, 2011 at 9:27 pm

Perfect! Brilliant! This worked exactly as it states above. Thanks cos I thought i would’ve had to buy 2 new flash drives

Christine > Yuuki Cross November 16, 2011 at 10:11 pm

1. Right-click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrrentControlSet\Control\ and select(right click) New -> Key.
2. Enter the name StorageDevicePolicies.
3. Click on the new registry key StorageDevicePolicies and on the right pan right-click, select (right click)New > DWORD and give it the name WriteProtect.
4. Double click on it and set its value to 0.(Choose Hexadecimal)
5. Ok. (^^)b

I tried all methods in this thread but failed many time i.e. morethan a month.
But, finallyI tried the above step of “”””””””””OYAGI”””””””””.

It was miracle for me. It worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Infact I though of it many time becuase my pen drive got write protected due to power failure when it was writing something to it, but I did’nt. Any way thanks. Other’s may also try.

Ooi November 26, 2011 at 9:11 am

Fantastic fix. Clear, simple, effective (for my case)
Query! I have an updated Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 installed.
Why my registry still got hacked?
Better than Kaspersky?

I had also tried to reformat it through Apacer Formatting Utility but it came out ‘Device not found’. I had also tried this : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies, and found the WriteProtect file but the value is already 0 although I have run the add.bat.

Well, if you’ve got a Windows Xp CD or DVD, then your problem is solved.
Just format the drive using the format option provided in the Windows Setup.
Here are the steps:
1) Insert the CD or DVD along with the affected USB drive or other media.
2) Boot your computer through the windows setup
3) When the choice appears to choose the drive in which windows is to be installed, the setup provides the option of formatting the drive. Choose your infected drive, and format it.
4) There’s no fourth step. Your problem is solved. Just stop the setup as your disk is formatted.
Happy New Year everyone.
Happy To Help!

jLux January 10, 2012 at 11:12 am

To everyone trying the solutions offered in the original post: To create the new key in the regedit, if you don’t have this key you must make one. Scroll as far as: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\, In the upper left hand corner, go to “edit” select “New” > “Key” hit enter. Then rename it “StorageDevicePolicies. Download and Run the Batch File called “add.bat” posted in the directions provided in the original post at the very top of this page. Check the value is “0”, if not change it to “o”
This SHOULD at least allow you to copy the files on the disk/card/pen drive/whatever, to a folder on your computer somewhere you choose so that you can then right click on the drive and reformat said drive. Then go into the drives’ Properties and change the Security settings so that the desired user(s) can access it in the future. Then change the Sharing settings as well, to something that suits your needs.
If all the info provided here and above does not work, then your drive has become corrupted, or is defective. There is not much more that can be done in the way of settings being reconfigured, to address the problem.
You can try the FREE Program, “Recuva” made by Piriform, the same people who make cCleaner & DeFraggler. It will help you recover files “trapped” on the damaged drive. As long as the drive shows up as a valid drive, you can recover lost or deleted files from it using ‘Recuva”
Hope I can help someone, J

Lifa January 10, 2012 at 10:29 pm

well thanks to the team it worked hey, I was to stupid to toggle the switch physical on the USB!

me2u2jb January 13, 2012 at 7:48 am

I just want to add my thanks to such a clear well-organized and most importantly effective solution. I learnt a lot and appreciate your help in fixing corrupted files on a USB that prevented their deletion or drive reformatting.

Mike January 14, 2012 at 1:45 am

If none of the above works ( minus the reformat cause you have important stuff)

I tried letting the USB do the recommended scan when you first plug the USB in. This allow it to check if there is any error etc…

After awhile no error came up for me, which then allowed me to put stuff back on.

I have install an “add” as recommended, but still i am not getting storagedevicepolicy. please help me.

Corey H February 10, 2012 at 7:15 am

I tried all three methods listed above. I had already tried adding the registry key with regedit. I have done that on 2 seperate computers with no results on either. I attempted to use Apacer Formatting Utility, but I get the message,
“Device Not Found/n
Press any key to continue. . .”
It exsist the command prompt as soon as I press any key. I tried several times and the same thing happend.
I also tried downloading the HDD Low Level Format Tool, but when I ran the program and selected my disk there was a message where the details should be, “Details are unavailable for this device” I run, “FORMAT THIS DEVICE” and hit okay when it warns me that all my data will be lost. While it is running it gives me hundreds of messages, “2/9/2012 3:59:28 PM Format Error Occurred at offset 37158912 19 – The media is wrte protected” Obviously the date and offset changed as it continued. I tried 5 times on a windows 7 computer and once on a Windows XP. The same result occured with both. And odly enough the serial number listed in the low level format tool program was 000000 although I don’t know if this is relevant.

Any more suggestions? I still am unable to remove the write-protection, and even unable to format my flash drive.

Hello. If the storage that your use is SD memory card, try to slide the lock slider to the lock postion. When the slider is in lock position, the write protection will not be a problem!

hi! just wanna say something that I hope would help. I experienced this kind of problem with my generic flash drive (32 GB) and fix the problem by doing the following:

WARNING!!! This will delete all data in your flash drive so back-up first…if it could still be done.
STEP 1: Insert your flash drive on the USB port and take note of the label(i.e…e:, f:, or g:)
Let us assume that your flash drive is drive F: which is my case.
STEP 2: Reboot your PC/Laptop and while it booting, press F8 to bring boot menu and select to
boot in Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
STEP 3: On the Command Prompt, navigate to your flash drive. (In this case, F:) Type in F: and you will be inside your flash drive.(or copy the following: F:\>format f:) You then will be presented with a choice and always choose yes. After the process, you will be informed that your flash drive is unusable but don’t worry, this will only remove the format of your flash drive. Now reboot…
STEP 4: Format your flash drive and VOILA! Problem solved!! Your flash drive should be good as new…..:P

I was trying to add songs to an iPod and was running in to this same issue. Here’s how I resolved it:

Hit the start button
Type regedit
Navigate to this location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies
Double click the ‘WriteProtect’ file
Change the ‘Value data’ field to 0

If it shows a 1, I believe that means it is write protected.

Hopefully it works for you guys to!

USB Problem write-protect March 13, 2012 at 11.00 am
i created that systemRestorePolicises and I set the value as 0 and i restarted my computer and then i tried to format my hp pendrive which is showing that the disk was write protected. Now it is showing windows was unable to fromat your disk.
ALL The above methods did not work for me. My USB is: 16-gig A-Data USB FLASH DISK. When I try to access it, it says “you need to format your disk” or something like that. then when I try to format it, it STILL SAYS “cannot be formatted because disk is WRITE-PROTECTED! this is so frustrating.. HELP!!!…
