I frequently use my Windows Laptop outside of my office on my USB wireless broadband dongle which is on e limited bandwidth data plan. Also the speed of the USB dongle is not so good at certain places as the wireless network reception varies from place to place. When along with it, Windows Update starts automatically in background and starts downloading hefty updates (sometimes as large as few 100 MBs), it uses my Internet connection data usage as well as reduces my Internet speed in the browser for other work which I am doing at that time. So I end up wasting money (on limited data plan) and time (because of slow speed of Internet browsing). In this article, I will share a very simple tutorial with which you can configure Windows Update to alert you when Windows Updates are available, but it will leave the option to download and install the updates to you.

Windows Updates

In this way, you can install Windows Update when you are on a faster broadband connection with high data limit or unlimited data plan so that you don’t end up spending too much money for the updates as the data cost. At the same time, you get to update the Windows at convenient times and stay updated for better security of your laptop. The tutorial is fairly simple and easy to follow, just follow the below steps. This tutorial works for almost all version of Windows including Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. In future, it will work with most Windows OS as well as its very basic functionality.

Step1 : Go to Control Panel > Windows Updates

Step 2 : On the settings Windows which opens up, select the option from the dropdown which reads as:

“Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them

and Press “OK”

This is it, it is a simple 2 step tutorial which will show you notifications in tray on the bottom right next to the clock telling you “New Updates are available

When you click on this tray icon, it will show you what all updates are available and you can select to download them or ignore them as per your need and convenience.
