Trouble:
A Reader Indranil Mukherjee mailed us this problem that he Cannot See Shutdown Option in Start Menu. But he has also told in his mail that his computer was infected with some virus before this problem started appearing.
This problem of missing shutdown option in start menu in start menu may appear due to following two reasons including:
- Missing shutdown option issue could be due to the Local Computer Policy settings
- Missing shutdown option could also be due to mis-configured registry settings
Let’s discuss the potentials solutions to restore the missing shutdown option in windows start menu.
Fix:
Method 1: ( Local Computer Policy )
1. Open Start Menu >> Run, type gpedit.msc and press Enter key.
2. Navigate to
User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar
3. Double click “Remove and Prevent Access To The Shut Down Command” and select Not Configured or Disabled
4. Close Group Policy
Method 2: ( Windows Registry )
1. Start Menu >> Run, type regedit and press Enter Key
2. Navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
3. On both or one of the path you will find a registry with following details
Key Name: NoClose
Key Type: DWORD
4. Double click the key to set the value
Value: 1 = Disable Shutdown, 0 = Enable Shutdown
We hope at least one of the above solution will help you fix the problem of missing shutdown option in start menu, if not let us know through comments.

I just see a transparent window when I click on start and then on the arrow for restart, shutdown, hibernate options. I am using ‘Windows Vista Home Basic’. When I try to use the ‘classic start menu’ I just see a transparent window & I can’t see options for any program but when I change to ‘start menu’ I can see options for program but I can’t see options for shutdown. I have tried above solution but they do not work. Please suggest a solution for this. Thanks!!!!!

I have a user having this issue. This is the second user I’ve had that had this issue. The first one was fixed by simply using the gpedit.msc fix below. This user it doesnt’ seem to help at all though. Here’s what I’ve tried so far:
open gpedit.msc
User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Start Menu and Taskbar -> Remove and prevent access to the Shut Down, Restart, Sleep, and Hibernate commands -> Disabled.
open regedit
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer created a 32bit DWORD named NoClose and set the option to 0.
open regedit:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\
Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer created a 32bit DWORD named NoClose and set the option to 0.
Scanned entire PC with Malwarebytes.org free anti-virus scanner. No viruses or malware of any kind found.
Machine Specs:
Dell Latitude E6400
Windows 7 Professional
