Windows 7 is becoming more popular day by day for its speed, nice graphics and better performance compared to Windows Vista. I have been using Windows 7 for a few months now and don’t feel like booting into my Windows Vista laptop anymore. One of our readers sent us a problem related to Windows 7:
Search Box Is Missing From Start My Windows 7 Menu
This is not a very common problem to see, but it looks more like a Windows component missing. In this article I will share with you a method to bring back the missing search option to Windows 7 Start Menu. We have already written a similar tutorial for Windows XP Search Option missing.
The most common reason for this is removal of Windows Search component from Windows feature. This may happen due to some software installation which disabled the feature, or it may also be because of the Windows Search Service being disabled or stopped by some software or malware. In case you suspect a malware, run a malware scan with MBAM tool.
To solve this problem, you need to do two things, first see whether the service is running or not, if not, restart the “Windows Search” Service, second thing is See if the “Windows Search” is properly installed or not. I will detail both of these below:
Restart Windows Search Service
1. Press “Windows + R” key together for Run Prompt and type “services.msc”, click OK.
2. This will open the Windows Service Management Window. Scroll down and locate “Windows Search”. Right click on “Windows Search” service and click Restart.
If you are not able to locate this service, see the next section to Install Windows Search Component.
Install Missing Windows Search Component
It may also happen that Windows Search component is not installed or has been uninstalled from your computer because of some reason. To install Window search:
1. Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features
2. Click on “Turn Windows features on or off” link on the left hand pane as highlighted in image below.
3.On the Windows Features Window, scroll Down to “Windows Search”, check the box if it is unchecked and click OK.
This will install the Windows Search feature if it was missing or uninstalled. Just restart your computer and check the start menu, the search option on the start menu should be back.
