This is part 13 of the Ask Trouble Fixers series, we have picked up five questions from the emails we have received from our readers.

Trouble 1 :

My Gmail does not open on my computer, but if i open on another computer than it opens, actually main login page does not opens. – Pinky

Fix:

There can be two reasons for Gmail login page not opening on your computer. There is a fake hosts file entry which is redirecting gmail.com to some local or non existing address. The other reason could be bad cookies or temporary files. See the solutions below for these two problems:

1. A particular website does not open on my computer

2. Gmail Does Not Open On My Computer

Trouble 2 :

There is no search option in my computer.I am using Windows XP. – Shekhar

Fix:

See this article for solution :

Search Option Missing From Windows Start Menu

Trouble 3 :

I upgraded memory to 2 GB on dell dimension 1100. Restarted ok but screen stated to flash and break up,mouse froze had to turn off power button took out memory reinstalled still same – John

Fix:

RAM upgrade seems simple, but most of the time I have tried itself, I have faced some issues. So the best tips for RAM upgrade is be sure that the RAM you bought is absolutely compatible with your computer. Also be carful not to touch the memory chips on the RAM with bare hands if possible, this can damage the RAM chipset because of static electricity charges on skin.

After you fit the RAM in the slot, make sure that the RAM orientation is correct and its securely fixed into the slot. For your case, It seems that the RAM is kind of loose in the slot. Remove and re-insert it properly. See the tips below for RAM upgrade:

1. RAM Upgrade Tips And Tricks

2. Windows Does Not Boot After RAM Upgrade

Trouble 4 :

system restore wont work, saying there are currently no restore points available any help would be great. – Conan

Fix:

This tutorial explains how you can enable or disable System Restore :

Fix System Restore Not Working In Windows

Trouble 5 :

When i connect my pen-drive my computer hangs. – Rahul

Fix:

The Computer will hang in case it is trying to run some malicious script or virus located in the pen drive or the pen drive has gone faulty. To solve this problem, you need to disable the autoplay for the pen drive on your computer. Secondly, you need to remove any autorun entries in the pen drive. See the below two links for the same:

1. Protect Your Computer By Disabling Autoplay On Removable Drives

This is part 12 of the Ask Trouble Fixers series, we have picked up five questions from the emails we have received from our readers.

Trouble 1 :

I have a problem opening up group policy editor on my laptop running XP home from the run command. – Mark

Fix:

Group policy editor is not available for Home edition of Windows XP. You can use group policy editor by running “gpedit.msc” in professional edition of windows XP.

Trouble 2 :

I recently bought one Acer LCD monitor from our Kuwait local market. My problem is after I connect my Acer LCD to the CPU and just I want to format my computer so i put my Windows Operating system cd (Windows XP professional) in the drive to boot but that time the screen is shows input device not recognized and black screen and its written like "Input Device not Recognized".But if I remove the boot cd from the drive and start the computer its working normally so please suggest a solution to me. – Shan

Fix:

The reason as per what I can figure out is the graphic card to which the monitor has been connected. When you are using an operating system boot CD, that time connect the LCD monitor to the on-board VGA port at the back of the computer casing (which you are calling CPU). This will ensure that the video output is always there even in the absence of the graphics card driver.

After you install Windows XP, install the graphics driver on it, and connect the monitor back to the Graphics card. This should solve your trouble.

Trouble 3 :

I cannot access my registry editor. why ? – Manas

Fix:

The registry editor gets disabled due to malicious scripts or viruses or trojans. To enable the registry editor, see these two links:

1. Registry Editing has been disabled by Administrator

2. Virus Effect Remover – Remove damages caused to computers by viruses

Trouble 4 :

I have dell laptop with windows xp sp2. Whenever I try to open internet via Internet explorer “send / don’t send error appears”.When i click “send or don’t send” all web page are closed. Please help me to resolve my issue. – Hemant

Fix:

This is a case of Internet Explorer crashing on accessing Internet. Read our article to solve this problem : Internet Explorer crashes with a message “Iexplore.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close”

Alternatively you can try using Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome, both of there are pretty nice browsers.

Trouble 5 :

USB drive is disabled by administrator in LAN based client PCs. how to enable usb drive in client pc though it is disabled/ blocked by administrator? Is there any program or vb script which can enable USB without administrator. – JB Soni

Fix:

Even if you are a not an Administrator, but a user with administrator rights, you can enable the USB. See the article below to enable USB drives : Pen drive blocked-disabled at office or college computer – Unblock it

In case you don’t have administrator rights, see this link, this will help you get admin rights : Get Administrator Rights In Windows Limited Account

Trouble 1 :

I click on Internet Explorer, it goes to open then immediately closes and the only way I can surf the Internet is with Firefox. Is there a way of fixing this problem? – Stan

Fix:

Internet Explorer crashes sometimes due to corrupt or malicious add-ons or some other file corruption problems. You can either disable the add ons or Uninstall Internet Explorer and Install it again.

See these articles for detail:

1. Internet Explorer Crashes With Message “Iexplore.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close”

2. Uninstall Internet Explorer Completely

Trouble 2 :

My laptop uses 100% CPU when I try to open any folder. And it does not show any thing. Computer almost hangs. Does not respond to any thing at all. – Gireesh

Fix:

This usually happens due to some virus or some other malfunctioning application. See this article to solve the problem : SVCHOST Using 100% CPU and Memory

Trouble 3 :

my pc displays a message windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <windows root>\system32\hal.dll – Usha

Fix:

hal.dll is an important file needed for Windows. See this article to solve hal.dll problem –

Hal.dll is Missing or Corrupt in Windows

Trouble 4 :

I have dell d800 latitude laptop and that is protected with the admin password and i don’t know the admin password can you help me how can i removed the admin password ? – Adnan

Fix:

To reset the windows admin password, see our article on : Forgot Windows Password – Reset Windows Password.

Trouble 5 :

When I download a video the video plays but the screen remains dark. I can hear the video but cannot see anything. – Steve

Fix:

The problem seems like either graphics problem or codecs problem. See the two solutions below:

1. Can Not Play Video In Windows Media Player

2. Install Graphics Cards For Windows

Hope you find these solutions useful. You can submit your problems to us at Our Submit Problem Page.

This is part 10 of the Ask Trouble Fixers series, we have picked up five questions out of some problems we received from our readers.

Trouble 1 :

I have Intel 845GL-M motherboard,I have installed Windows XP sp2,but i can not install audio driver because i don’t have that driver software. – Praveen

Fix:

To locate the hardware drivers, you need to know the motherboard brand or hardware chipset.

See the three articles below that will help you in solving your problem related to device drivers:

1. Find / Download Device Drivers For Detected Devices On Your Computer
2. Know Detailed Hardware Configuration of Your Computer

3. Check Details of Device Drivers Installed on Your Computer

Trouble 2 :

During Internet connection when I am surfing or browsing the internet the picture or images are not clear something like blurred images, i use mostly all the browsers but the same problem remains on all browser. – Sunil

Fix:

This can be due to several reasons including:

1. Improper screen resolutions, for this problem, try with different screen resolutions by right clicking the desktop > settings, change screen resolution and try loading images.

2. Improper graphics drivers. Check your graphics drivers and also flash player for dynamic content.

3. Improper browser settings. For this problem, try in different browsers like Google Chrome / Mozilla Firefox / Opera / Safari etc. Try to adjust the browser settings to achieve proper loading of images.

Trouble 3 :

I once installed the Nokia PC suite but now I want to uninstall that but I am able to uninstall that. It displays the error message saying some files or missing. I even reinstalled whole Software again thinking some files have corrupted even then when I uninstall it is displaying same message that some files are missing. – Apache

Fix:

There are certain softwares which create problem during un-installation. To uninstall such softwares, see this article : Fee Un-installer Tools To Remove Un-wanted Programs

Trouble 4 :

I got this virus named pagefile.sys – Hanafi

Fix:

Pagefile.sys is Windows operating system file which is usually created on C-drive. This is not a virus but an important file needed to run windows properly. To hide this file see this article on hiding system files : How to hide desktop.ini and thumb.db

Trouble 5 :

How to format the pen-drive/flash which says the drive is write protected. – Raj

Fix:

This is one of the most common and annoying problem these days with pen drives. See our article on : Remove Write Protection On USB Pen Drive or Memory Card . The last method in this article, updated on 28th May 2009 lists the utility to format such pen drives.

Trouble 1 :

Whenever I am trying to format my Pen-drive it keeps showing that windows was
unable to complete the format. – Amal

Fix:

There are several possible reason for which this problem appears. We have already covered it in our article : Problem in formatting pen drive

Trouble 2 :

I get this error with windows media player – Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly. – Noker

Fix:

This problem usually occurs due to sound driver issues or some missing audio/video codecs.

For Codecs related problem, see our article: Cannot Play Video Files In Media player

For Sound Driver realted issues, see this article: Audio not working or Problem with sound in Windows

Trouble 3 :

I downloaded firmware for my Netgear router. It was a .chk file which the router would not accept. – Tim

Fix:

There is a known bug in some of the Netgear routers (including the one I am using) that it will not accept the .chk file using Mozilla Firefox. You can use the same file to upgrade the firmware using Microsoft Internet Explorer. It worked for my router.

Trouble 4 :

I ran the software to remove the WGA notification,it said it was not on my system however, it keeps appearing just as windows opens. How do I get rid of it? – Tim

Fix:

You can suppress the WGA notification, but this won’t solve the problem. Get the copy of Windows Registered properly to get rid of this warning. Here is a tool for suppressing the warning : How To Remove Windows Is Not Genuine Notification

Trouble 5 :

I cant access any Antivirus Website & Microsoft website. Page Can not be displayed error indicates. – Rajoo

Fix:

Not being able to open antivirus websites is a symptopm of virus which is preventing access to search engines and anti-virus update sites so that the virus can protect itself. We have written the solution to the same in our article : Remove Virus Which Redirects to go.google.com | go.google.com Redirect Virus Removal tool for Windows.

Here we are back with part 7 of the Ask Trouble Fixers series, we have picked up five questions out of some problems we received from our readers.

Trouble 1 :

Whenever I starts my computer, after 15 minutes a message displays that Generic Host Process for win32 Services Problem Occurred and want to close” and at the end of that message - end error/don’t send problem to Microsoft .When I click don’t send then my computer theme changes for 1-2 minutes and my internet connection disconnect, after that I am unable to connect my internet connection. – Puneet

Fix:

This problem that occurs because of some windows related socket services, see our article on Generic Host Process for Win32 Services Has Stopped Working to solve this issue.

Trouble 2 :

I am unable to Shut down/Restart/Log off from Windows Start Menu. I have shut down my system every time from restart switch and then shut down. – Sarfaraj

Fix:

Due to malicious scripts or registry problems, the start menu shutdown options get disabled. See this solution to Shutdown Options disabled in Windows Start Menu.

Trouble 3 :

How to remove new folder.exe virus from my PC. This is the virus when I click on it, it spreads in my whole PC and folder option get disabled. – Deepak

Fix:

New Folder Virus is a common virus about which we have given a solution before. See the solution here to Remove New Folder Virus.

Trouble 4 :

I can not uninstall Norton anti-virus which is already in my pc.I tried to remove it from add or remove programs in control panel, but it failed. Please help me to remove Norton antivirus from my PC. – Thasreena

Fix:

Due to some corruption in files and registry settings, this problem arises. See the

Norton Removal Tool to remove Norton from your computer.

Trouble 5 :

My PC is detecting pen-drives. The safely remove icon is coming in tray but in My
Computer, Pen-drive icon is not showing for removable drive. – Nitish

Fix:

This is clearly a problem of drive letter assignment in windows. See this article on Pen Drive Does Not Show Up In My Computer to solve this problem.

Here comes part 6 of Ask Troublefixers after a break of a week. We have been on little vacation in last week so we were not able to take up the question answers in last week.

Trouble 1 :

Can you please tell me how can I remove Service pack 3 from Windows XP because i m not able to install my HDA audio drive. – Rahul

Fix:

There is a way to undo the installation of Windows XP service pack 3. So in case you have upgraded to Windows XP service pack 3, you can downgrade to SP2 using this tutorial to Uninstall Windows XP Service Pack 3. For windows driver related problems, see our tutorial on Finding Windows Drivers, also some Drivers related tutorials here.

Trouble 2 :

My computer responds "Unable to load graphics" when i prompt 2 play a game. – Varchasva

Fix:

This is a clear indication that the graphics the game is using are beyond the capability of your computer’s graphics card or chipset. In such a case, try to reduce the graphics quality in game settings and options. Also turn off un-necessary applications before starting the game.

Sometimes its a DirectX related problem, see our tutorial on DirectX problem with Games. You can also consider to upgrade the graphics card as per your budget and needs. You can test your graphics card using this tutorial.

Trouble 3 :

I have a problem with my one of hardware device. I have assembled my computer
recently, when I am installing windows XP on my computer some times my computer
is automatically restarting with a small noise. – Luckman

Fix:

The noise you hear is a beep from the internal speaker of the computer case or cabinet. The most common reason for such problem is a faulty RAM or incompatible RAM. See theses guidelines while buying RAM for your computer. Read this article on RAM compatibility for further details.

Trouble 4 :

My computer freezes,it gets blue screen. It is even so slow taking more than 15 minutes to load up. There is plenty of room on hard disc ,it turns its self on saying serious error, scanned with Malewarebytes, antimalware, also nod virus detection removed all infected files but still its happening. Please help. – Derek

Fix:

The problems you mention can be because of certain reasons, most likely outdated or corrupted device drivers cause Blue Screen of Death errors. See our tutorial on finding drivers to upgrade device drivers, you can also try this paid Driver Scanner software if you want.

Other reason can be over-heating because of faulty fans.

The reason for it to take too much time to boot is because of too much startup entries. See this tutorial to make your computer fast.

Trouble 5 :

I can’t use microphone in my computer and when i use msn i can hear my friends but they can’t hear me. – Helder

Fix:

Microphone problem is one of the most common problems with Windows Vista as it treats different microphone inputs differently and user has to select the microphone correctly. Once you select the correct microphone input device in settings, the problem gets solved. See this article on Microphone problem with GTalk also this article for Microphone problem with Yahoo Messenger

This is part 5 of our series of Ask Troublefixers , we have picked below problems submitted by our readers via email and answered them.

Trouble 1 :

I have faced a problem in window xp. When i click on changed window firewall setting it show "Window could not start windows firewall / internet connection sharing (ICS) service”

- Rahul

Fix:

Many of the Windows features make use of the services which keep running in background or some of the services which are started or stopped by certain softwares as needed. The problem you are facing is because of one such stopped service. You can restart the service that is causing the problem by following our article which talks about Restarting Windows Service.

Trouble 2 :

While shutting down the computer “END NOW” option is showing for some application always when i try to shutdown. – Ajay

Fix:

“End Process Now” dialogue box appears many times when shutting down windows. It is a very common problem. Try to see what applications cause this problem, you can manually close that software before shutting down, that will make it fast. Alternatively, you can use this tutorial on Registry Hack To Shutdown Computer Quickly by altering the wait time for applications.

Trouble 3 :

When I installed Windows XP on a pc with pentium4 processor and then I upgrade that
pc with Intel Dual Core processor later. Hard disk is not booting Windows and Restarting continuously. Can I use that windows without reinstalling? – Adnan

Fix:

When you make hardware level changes to your computer by adding new hardware having considerably different or upgraded drivers, the windows may not boot. This is because the Windows XP installed on your hard disk is using old device drivers for motherboard chipset, memory controllers etc. To solve this problem, I would advice you to boot the Windows in “Safe Mode” by pressing F8 during windows is trying to boot. Once you boot in safe mode, un-install the old hardware drivers and install the new hardware drivers. See this article to know the new hardware details. After driver update try to boot Windows normally. If you still find it re-staring, I would recommend to take your data backup and install a fresh copy of Windows XP.

Trouble 4 :

How to find if any computer is infected with Virus. What are all the ways to find the virus in any computer system. – Khan

Fix:

The most common way is to observe something suspicions happening with computer applications or files or Internet connection, but this is not advisable, because there are many Trojans and Viruses which will silently steal your data and private information. See our article to Protect Computer From Virus and Trojans. Also if you think that your computer is already infected, then use these free tools to scan and remove viruses. First is Free Kasper Virus Removal Tool and the second one is Free Norton Virus Scan.

Trouble 5 :

My computer has Windows XP Service Pack 2. My problem is that USB devices like pen-drive and ,phone are not detected, but my USB mouse working fine. – R.Abdul

Fix:

The problem of Pen-Drives not working on computer is a typical case of missing or disabled USB Mass Storage Device drivers. To solve Pen Drive not detected problem, see our article on Pen Drive Not working also see this article if your are facing USB drive problem with Windows Vista.

This is part 4 of our series of Ask Troublefixers , we have picked below five e-mail problems and answered them in this article.

Trouble 1 :

In my computer the loading of installed softwares is very slow when I switch on the computer for ex. virtual cd. system explorer, antivirus. Please solve my problem, I have to wait for 15 min every time – Sharath

Fix:

This problem occurs when there are lots of programs in start-up list which start automatically and the computer has low RAM or old hardware resources to handle so many softwares speedily. We have covered the steps to disable some start-up tasks which are not critical for startup. Here is the article on Computer Is Slow And Takes Too Long Time To Start.

Trouble 2 :

I cannot format my pen-drive ,data can not be stored in it more than 10gb though it is pen-drive of 16gb,cut paste option also not available? – Miheer

Fix:

Formatting Pen-Drive is a very common problem these days mainly because of fake or spurious pen drives in the market which are hacked to show that they are high-capacity whereas theta re not. See out article on Not Able To Format Pen Drive to see the details.

Trouble 3 :

What is CRC error? I get CRC errors while copying data from CD or DVD. – Mahesh

Fix:

CRC is called cyclic redundancy check, is nothing but a calculation done after copying a file from CD/ DVD or after download of a file. If the CRC at the Source (CD) and Destination (on Hard-disk) does not match, this means that file was not copied correctly. Now if you get a CRC error while copying data from a CD / DVD there are high chances that the CD is scratched or the lens of the reader is too weak. First of all, try to clean the CD / DVD with a soft and dry cloth, also See the Article on How To Read Scratched CD.

Trouble 4 :

I have a VGA card and I didn’t have the cd of the driver of it and I formatted my pc. I remove it to see the model to download it but I didn’t see any model on it what I can do is there any program can know the model of this VGA – Mohammed

Fix:

Yes, there is a nice utility which shows you the hardware details of the devices connected to your computer. See this article on Know Detailed Hardware Configuration Of Computer.

Trouble 5 :

When I boot up and log in before the hour glass disappears ‘my documents’ opens 52 times. I then need to close group down. – Vicki

Fix:

This is generally because of RUN entrees in Windows Registry which are created by some malicious scripts. See the Solution in the Article My Documents Opens Automatically On Windows Startup.
