Windows Vista Power Options are different from Windows XP wherein you could simply enable and disable Hibernate options from Windows Control Panel > Power Options > Hibernate settings

There is no such simple setting windows in Power options of Windows Vista. In this article we share a method to restore Hibernate option in Windows Vista Start Menu.

Fix:

Follow these steps to enable Hibernate option in start menu of Windows Vista:

1. Press “Window Key + r” or go to Start > Run to launch Run Prompt. Type “cmd” and press enter to open Command Prompt.

2. On the command Prompt windows, type the following two command in order:

powercfg /hibernate on

powercfg -h on

That is it, its done. Now you can see and use Hibernate Option in Windows Start Menu as seen below:

We have been receiving some emails form the readers who face different type of error messages while trying to standby or hibernate their computers.

This type of abnormal behavior at the time when your computer tries to enter standby or hibernate occurs due to following reasons:

Incompatible display drivers or no display drivers

Hardware may not support hibernation and standby

Some of the users reported that the standby button was visible in shutdown option menu but grayed out or disabled to click.

Some error messages which appear when system enters standby or hibernate mode are:

Unable to enter Standby mode.

0×0000009F: DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE

Even in some cases computer goes into standby or hibernate mode but cannot resume back again and results in system restart. It may also happen that your computer resumes back from hibernate or standby but mouse or audio does not work properly.

Let’s see how can we fix these issues.

Fix:

There are some simple practices which you can follow in order to avoid hibernation issues.

1. Do not make major changes to computer state after putting it on standby or hibernate.

2. Do not force hibernation or standby while running heavy applications.

How To Make Your Computer Enter Hibernation or Standby

One of the most common reasons when your computer refuses to hibernate or standby is always due to Basic video drivers installed which comes bundled with windows.

In order to support hibernation and standby features you need to install the graphic drivers from the CD which comes with your motherboard, or you can search for the advanced display drivers for your motherboard model on web.

After installation of the advanced video drivers you will need to restart in order for the changes to take place.

Check to see whether your hardware supports hibernation or standby

1. Open Start >> Run or Press Window Key + r

2. Type “powercfg.cpl” (without quotes) then click OK

3. Now Click on the Advanced Tab Check whether Standby and Hibernation appear in the drop down. (as shown in the image below)

4. Click on Cancel button to close Power Options.

We hope this will help to fix the trouble

One of our readers is facing a problem, whenever he hibernates his computer, the computer does not hibernate properly and restarts. Isn’t it annoying? It surely is.

What is difference between hibernate and shutdown?

Shutdown : All the contents of the ram and other resources are cleaned up and computer is powered off. When you turn on your computer, all the operating system files are loaded again to boot the computer.

Hibernate: All the contents of ram are stored in a file on hard disk. When you turn on the computer, the same file is copied back to the ram and your computer will start in the state you hibernated it.

But what to do in case your computer restarts on hibernating or standby ?

Lets see the how to get rid of this problem.

Fix:

There are primarily two main reasons why computer restarts on hibernate, they are:

In compatible hardware driver.

Too much RAM on computer.

Make sure that you have compatible drivers for the hardware on your computer. This is one of the main reasons which causes improper hibernate and which results in computer restart.

For example, in one case, the user had Windows XP on his system and his keyboard drivers were as per Windows 98. Such petty things may also cause problems. Check that all your hardware has compatible drivers installed.

Also too much RAM causes hibernate problem, reason is simple, more the RAM, more the content to copy onto hard disk while hibernating, so in such case, certain builds of Windows XP crash and restart while hibernating. Windows update or installing latest service packs may or may not help, but its worth a try. So if you have good amount of RAM, like 1GB or more, it is recommended to shutdown the computer rather than hibernate.

Hope the information helps to fix the trouble.
