This is part 12 of the Ask Trouble Fixers series, we have picked up five questions from the emails we have received from our readers.

Trouble 1 :

I have a problem opening up group policy editor on my laptop running XP home from the run command. – Mark

Fix:

Group policy editor is not available for Home edition of Windows XP. You can use group policy editor by running “gpedit.msc” in professional edition of windows XP.

Trouble 2 :

I recently bought one Acer LCD monitor from our Kuwait local market. My problem is after I connect my Acer LCD to the CPU and just I want to format my computer so i put my Windows Operating system cd (Windows XP professional) in the drive to boot but that time the screen is shows input device not recognized and black screen and its written like "Input Device not Recognized".But if I remove the boot cd from the drive and start the computer its working normally so please suggest a solution to me. – Shan

Fix:

The reason as per what I can figure out is the graphic card to which the monitor has been connected. When you are using an operating system boot CD, that time connect the LCD monitor to the on-board VGA port at the back of the computer casing (which you are calling CPU). This will ensure that the video output is always there even in the absence of the graphics card driver.

After you install Windows XP, install the graphics driver on it, and connect the monitor back to the Graphics card. This should solve your trouble.

Trouble 3 :

I cannot access my registry editor. why ? – Manas

Fix:

The registry editor gets disabled due to malicious scripts or viruses or trojans. To enable the registry editor, see these two links:

1. Registry Editing has been disabled by Administrator

2. Virus Effect Remover – Remove damages caused to computers by viruses

Trouble 4 :

I have dell laptop with windows xp sp2. Whenever I try to open internet via Internet explorer “send / don’t send error appears”.When i click “send or don’t send” all web page are closed. Please help me to resolve my issue. – Hemant

Fix:

This is a case of Internet Explorer crashing on accessing Internet. Read our article to solve this problem : Internet Explorer crashes with a message “Iexplore.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close”

Alternatively you can try using Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome, both of there are pretty nice browsers.

Trouble 5 :

USB drive is disabled by administrator in LAN based client PCs. how to enable usb drive in client pc though it is disabled/ blocked by administrator? Is there any program or vb script which can enable USB without administrator. – JB Soni

Fix:

Even if you are a not an Administrator, but a user with administrator rights, you can enable the USB. See the article below to enable USB drives : Pen drive blocked-disabled at office or college computer – Unblock it

In case you don’t have administrator rights, see this link, this will help you get admin rights : Get Administrator Rights In Windows Limited Account

Trouble 1 :

I click on Internet Explorer, it goes to open then immediately closes and the only way I can surf the Internet is with Firefox. Is there a way of fixing this problem? – Stan

Fix:

Internet Explorer crashes sometimes due to corrupt or malicious add-ons or some other file corruption problems. You can either disable the add ons or Uninstall Internet Explorer and Install it again.

See these articles for detail:

1. Internet Explorer Crashes With Message “Iexplore.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close”

2. Uninstall Internet Explorer Completely

Trouble 2 :

My laptop uses 100% CPU when I try to open any folder. And it does not show any thing. Computer almost hangs. Does not respond to any thing at all. – Gireesh

Fix:

This usually happens due to some virus or some other malfunctioning application. See this article to solve the problem : SVCHOST Using 100% CPU and Memory

Trouble 3 :

my pc displays a message windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <windows root>\system32\hal.dll – Usha

Fix:

hal.dll is an important file needed for Windows. See this article to solve hal.dll problem –

Hal.dll is Missing or Corrupt in Windows

Trouble 4 :

I have dell d800 latitude laptop and that is protected with the admin password and i don’t know the admin password can you help me how can i removed the admin password ? – Adnan

Fix:

To reset the windows admin password, see our article on : Forgot Windows Password – Reset Windows Password.

Trouble 5 :

When I download a video the video plays but the screen remains dark. I can hear the video but cannot see anything. – Steve

Fix:

The problem seems like either graphics problem or codecs problem. See the two solutions below:

1. Can Not Play Video In Windows Media Player

2. Install Graphics Cards For Windows

Hope you find these solutions useful. You can submit your problems to us at Our Submit Problem Page.

Continuing with our series of Ask Troublefixers , here is part 3 of the article on computer problems we published last week. This time also we will pick some common computer problems.

Trouble 1 :

I have a peculiar problem. When i try to open few websites in my office like www.cnnibn.com, its not loading..The page is blank. But when i use proxy server I can able to load that website and some other websites like www.ndtv.com is not opening and I m getting blank page. – Praveen

Fix:

This problem occurs due to two reasons, your office IT team have blocked these particular domains on their DNS, or they have blocked these sites using CHOSTS file entry for these sites. If you want to access them in such a case, you can keep using proxy, or change the DNS to Open DNS or Other DNS as suggested in this Article. Also check for the CHOSTS entries.

Trouble 2 :

When I try to open my Network Connections I get an error message "The Network Connections Folder was unable to retrieve the list of Network adapters on your machine. Please make sure that the Network Connections Service is enabled and running". – Amit

Fix:

This Problem usually occurs when there is some problems in starting of windows network service, see the tutorial on Windows Network Services to solve this problem.

Trouble 3 :

When i bought my laptop some things were not there, but later on on found (auto exec.bat,bootmgr,config.sys,hiberfil.sys,pagefile.sys,$recycle.bin,boot,config.msi) these ones there. I don’t from where all this came from. – Rohit

Fix:

These are windows system files which are always there and are always hidden and not visible to users. Some times accidently or due to some software or malicious script, this settings get enabled. See this tutorial on hiding the system files to solve this problem.

Trouble 4 :

I am using windows xp sp2. My problem is when I am starting the computer the windows xp logo is coming very slowly (blurred view to normal view). Please tell what the problem could be? – Mohammed

Fix:

This problem occurs not because of windows, but usually because of old and dusty monitors. If that is a CRT monitor, the chances are high that its getting old and the tube is getting dusty and weak in power. See this article on flicker of old monitors.

Trouble 5 :

I downloaded a game called DELTA FORCE,(trial version)and later uninstalled from my computer. But, thereafter one file named DF7BDE.tmp in temporary folder could not be deleted even using after `Remove on next boot’ application. What to do? Is it a virus? How to delete this? – Rajkumar

Fix:

There are some applications which might be holding the temp file. We have already covered this problem in this article on Unable To delete a file in windows.
