It could happen that you suddenly see some useless files created on your USB portable devices like pen drives, iPod and Memory Card etc. These files may be sometimes created by some virus infection which might have come after you had used your USB drive on any other computer which is already infected with some virus.

When you drive get infected normally the virus will create some virus executables and autorun.inf files which will make the executable run the next time you connect that drive to any other computer, so in order to remove virus from pen drive you will need to remove autorun.inf and other virus files

Here is how you can remove these files and make your drive free from virus

Fix:

It will remove the files like thumbs.db, or .Trashes folder etc and moreover you can also configure what to delete and what not to delete on your USB portable drive.

You simply run it on your computer and will monitor every pen drive you plug in, and remove any potential viruses.

Fix:

You can simply Download Ninja Pendisk and run it, it will sit on your system tray, and monitor any pen-drive which u connect to your computer. It works for Windows XP and Windows Vista both.

Also you can set it to start at start-up, so that you need not run it every time you start windows, it will come automatically.

Trouble:

Many Viruses infect and harm the system with the use of malicious autorun files. This post is from the series of solutions we have prepared in order to protect windows from autorun.inf viruses which normally spread through pen drives or cd’s and other portable devices.

Recently we came across a program called USB Firewall. It prevent windows to process the malicious instructions while opening a virus infected pen drive or any portable USB device.

USB Firewall automatically detects the malicious autorun.inf file on your portable USB device, you can also see what command are written there in virus autorun.inf file.

Let’s see how can you use USB Firewall to protect yourself from all sort of autorun.inf viruses

Fix:

USB Firewall monitors all the USB device and ignores CD or DVD drives. USB Firewall is good enough to provide a basic level of protection from autorun.inf viruses which spread through USB Pen drives.

How to use USB Firewall?

You need to download and run USB Firewall application rest will be taken care by USB Firewall.

Features of USB Firewall:

You can delete the suspicious autorun.inf files

Show autorun.inf files

Clean All Partition

USB Firewall will always alert you about any suspicious autorun.inf file if its running when you have inserted your USB pen drive.

This tool is a freeware and free from any adware, malware and spyware etc, we have already tested this tool of some pen drives it works great and easy and solves the purpose.

Most of these viruses cause the following most common problems on your windows computer.

Folder Options Hidden

Task Manager Disabled

Registry Editing Disabled

Command Prompt Disabled

All the types of viruses which infect from your system, through a file called autorun.inf created on the root directory of your pen drive. So, when you double click your virus infected pen drive the virus automatically copy itself to your system.

Let’s see how can you still open your infected pen drives on your computer copy your data.

Fix:

1. Firstly insert your pen drive into the USB port, windows will run autorun menu but don’t open your pen drive through autorun menu rather cancel it.

2. As your pen drive will get detected and will show under My Computer with a drive letter associated.

3. Press Window + R and type <drive letter of pendrive>: and press Enter.

For Example

e:

4. Back up your files from your pen drive, but remember to copy files only not folders.

5. Now, Click on Tools >> Folder Options and Click the View tab.

Scroll down and select to show hidden files and folders and click Ok

6. Move back the focus to your pen drive, you will see many virus files and folder. Delete any files or folder which looks suspicious to you from your pen drive.

We hope this will help you to backup your data from your pen drive when it is also infected with a virus, you can also refer to our post on How to troubleshoot Top 10 USB Pen Drive Problems or you can refer to out virus problems and solutions category.

How a virus in your pen drive infects?

Most of the active viruses infect your windows system as soon as you double click on the Pen Drive icon in your my computer. As virus always creates a autorun.inf file which is a system ,hidden and a read only file on your pen drive. It point to the main virus file which is also located on the pen drive. When user double clicks on the pen drive files pointed by the autorun.inf got executed which copies the virus files on your system.

The image below shows the Autorun file entries in some special characters when you right click on the drive.

Whenever you insert your pen drive / portable drive into USB port on your system make sure to run a virus scan with your anti virus before opening your pen drive contents in windows explorer.

3. Use FreeCommander:

FreeCommander is again a file explorer like windows explorer, so you just need to download it by clicking here and install it.

After installing open your pen drive through FreeCommander (as shown in the image below)

Quick Update: 26th March 2008

4. Use your virus infected pen drive: You can also use your virus infected pen drives to copy your important data in worst circumstances.

How to backup your important data when your pen drive is infected with a virus

a. Insert your pen drive into the usb port, if it detects your drive you will see it in my computer.

b. Now don’t double click on your drive, rather open the pen drive contents by typing the drive letter.

For Example: type g: and press enter if your pen drive is shown as new g drive under my computer.

c. Copy your important files from your pen drive close the window and format your pen drive after then.
