This is part 13 of the Ask Trouble Fixers series, we have picked up five questions from the emails we have received from our readers.

Trouble 1 :

My Gmail does not open on my computer, but if i open on another computer than it opens, actually main login page does not opens. – Pinky

Fix:

There can be two reasons for Gmail login page not opening on your computer. There is a fake hosts file entry which is redirecting gmail.com to some local or non existing address. The other reason could be bad cookies or temporary files. See the solutions below for these two problems:

1. A particular website does not open on my computer

2. Gmail Does Not Open On My Computer

Trouble 2 :

There is no search option in my computer.I am using Windows XP. – Shekhar

Fix:

See this article for solution :

Search Option Missing From Windows Start Menu

Trouble 3 :

I upgraded memory to 2 GB on dell dimension 1100. Restarted ok but screen stated to flash and break up,mouse froze had to turn off power button took out memory reinstalled still same – John

Fix:

RAM upgrade seems simple, but most of the time I have tried itself, I have faced some issues. So the best tips for RAM upgrade is be sure that the RAM you bought is absolutely compatible with your computer. Also be carful not to touch the memory chips on the RAM with bare hands if possible, this can damage the RAM chipset because of static electricity charges on skin.

After you fit the RAM in the slot, make sure that the RAM orientation is correct and its securely fixed into the slot. For your case, It seems that the RAM is kind of loose in the slot. Remove and re-insert it properly. See the tips below for RAM upgrade:

1. RAM Upgrade Tips And Tricks

2. Windows Does Not Boot After RAM Upgrade

Trouble 4 :

system restore wont work, saying there are currently no restore points available any help would be great. – Conan

Fix:

This tutorial explains how you can enable or disable System Restore :

Fix System Restore Not Working In Windows

Trouble 5 :

When i connect my pen-drive my computer hangs. – Rahul

Fix:

The Computer will hang in case it is trying to run some malicious script or virus located in the pen drive or the pen drive has gone faulty. To solve this problem, you need to disable the autoplay for the pen drive on your computer. Secondly, you need to remove any autorun entries in the pen drive. See the below two links for the same:

1. Protect Your Computer By Disabling Autoplay On Removable Drives

Here comes part 6 of Ask Troublefixers after a break of a week. We have been on little vacation in last week so we were not able to take up the question answers in last week.

Trouble 1 :

Can you please tell me how can I remove Service pack 3 from Windows XP because i m not able to install my HDA audio drive. – Rahul

Fix:

There is a way to undo the installation of Windows XP service pack 3. So in case you have upgraded to Windows XP service pack 3, you can downgrade to SP2 using this tutorial to Uninstall Windows XP Service Pack 3. For windows driver related problems, see our tutorial on Finding Windows Drivers, also some Drivers related tutorials here.

Trouble 2 :

My computer responds "Unable to load graphics" when i prompt 2 play a game. – Varchasva

Fix:

This is a clear indication that the graphics the game is using are beyond the capability of your computer’s graphics card or chipset. In such a case, try to reduce the graphics quality in game settings and options. Also turn off un-necessary applications before starting the game.

Sometimes its a DirectX related problem, see our tutorial on DirectX problem with Games. You can also consider to upgrade the graphics card as per your budget and needs. You can test your graphics card using this tutorial.

Trouble 3 :

I have a problem with my one of hardware device. I have assembled my computer
recently, when I am installing windows XP on my computer some times my computer
is automatically restarting with a small noise. – Luckman

Fix:

The noise you hear is a beep from the internal speaker of the computer case or cabinet. The most common reason for such problem is a faulty RAM or incompatible RAM. See theses guidelines while buying RAM for your computer. Read this article on RAM compatibility for further details.

Trouble 4 :

My computer freezes,it gets blue screen. It is even so slow taking more than 15 minutes to load up. There is plenty of room on hard disc ,it turns its self on saying serious error, scanned with Malewarebytes, antimalware, also nod virus detection removed all infected files but still its happening. Please help. – Derek

Fix:

The problems you mention can be because of certain reasons, most likely outdated or corrupted device drivers cause Blue Screen of Death errors. See our tutorial on finding drivers to upgrade device drivers, you can also try this paid Driver Scanner software if you want.

Other reason can be over-heating because of faulty fans.

The reason for it to take too much time to boot is because of too much startup entries. See this tutorial to make your computer fast.

Trouble 5 :

I can’t use microphone in my computer and when i use msn i can hear my friends but they can’t hear me. – Helder

Fix:

Microphone problem is one of the most common problems with Windows Vista as it treats different microphone inputs differently and user has to select the microphone correctly. Once you select the correct microphone input device in settings, the problem gets solved. See this article on Microphone problem with GTalk also this article for Microphone problem with Yahoo Messenger

Hope you find these solutions useful. You can submit your problems to us at Our Submit Problem Page.

Trouble:

One of Trouble Fixers reader, Pritam, reported a problem saying “After installing RAM display comes but OS did not load. and system restarts automatically“.

Strange co-incidence is that today only I bought some new RAM for one of my friends computer and I too faced such issue. I tried installing it on my computer and my computer also did not boot with new RAM. It was restarting again and again and again, not loading windows.

One thing I realized on comparing the RAM module which I am using and the new one is the number of Memory Chips on memory module.

Let us see in details.

Fix:

On observing closely,I found that there are 8 Memory chips on the new module on front side and no chip on the rear side as you can see in the above picture .

The module which I am using is having 8 chips on front and 8 at the back.

This simply means that each chip on new RAM is high density chip and contains twice the memory as compared to the old module. Due to this high density memory, my old motherboard is not able to read it properly and thus is not booting normally.

So next time you want to upgrade ram, be sure that the one you are buying is compatible with the old computer that you have. See this post for some more precautions before buying a RAM.

I didn’t have such good luck. Now I will find some of my friend whose computer can handle it, or I will get back to the vendor and ask him for a replacement with a compatible version.

Trouble:

Are facing troubles in running latest application software or games that demand a lot of RAM?

You may be feeling the need to upgrade your RAM?

But If you are going to add another RAM module to increase the RAM size without removing the old module, it may cause more troubles than good. Let us see the troubles that you may face:

Poor performance even after increasing the RAM.

System becomes unstable and restarts abruptly.

Only one of the two RAM modules is detected.

New RAM module is not detected.

Now lets us have a look at the precautions that you should take to avoid the above mentioned problems.

Fix:

If your computer motherboard has dual channel memory support ( see the motherboard’s user manual), then you must install two identical RAM modules for best performance. For best performance, put the two modules in two different memory channels (see motherboard manual for correct way of installation). So you can buy an identical RAM module as your existing module, or better approach would be to sell off the existing one and buy two new of same type, brand, capacity and frequency.

If your computer’s motherboard does not support dual channel memory support, then it is recommended that you replace your old RAM module with a new module of higher capacity. But before you buy a new RAM module, check your motherboard’s manual for maximum RAM frequency it supports, buy the new module of the maximum supported frequency for good performance.

If you want to add a new RAM module without removing the old one(not recommended), it is highly recommended that the two modules (old and new one) must be of same memory frequency. If the frequency is not same, system becomes unstable and restarts abruptly, which can be fatal for your computer.

In case the two RAM modules are based on different chipset technology (which changes the memory density, i.e the memory contained on each chip on the module), it may happen that only one one of the two is detected.

If the memory density of the new RAM module is not supported by your motherboard, it may happen that the new RAM module is not detected at all. So be very careful before buying a new memory module. Buy only after checking the supported memory types from motherboard’s manual.

So, The thumb-rule is – Always look carefully into the motherboard’s user manual before any kind of RAM upgrades.
