<p>One of our readers Errol submitted a Problem saying:</p>
<blockquote><p>SVCHOST is using 100% of memory. However, every time I kill the the program it come back.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>If you open Windows task manager by pressing shift+ctrl+esc key, and go to process tab, you will see numerous tasks with name as SVCHOST as you can see below:</p>

<p><a href="http://www.troublefixers.com/wp-content/uploads/images/HowToKnowSVCHOSTTaskDetails_E374/svchostprocessesintaskmanager.jpg"><img title="svchost-processes-in-task-manager" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px" height="427" alt="svchost-processes-in-task-manager" src="http://www.troublefixers.com/wp-content/uploads/images/HowToKnowSVCHOSTTaskDetails_E374/svchostprocessesintaskmanager_thumb.jpg" width="379" border="0" /></a> </p>

<p>Some of these maybe viruses or softwares that you no longer use. In this article we will tell you a way to see the svchost process details so that you can check whether that is something suspicious running on your computer.</p>
<p> <span id="more-454"></span>
<p><strong>Fix:</strong></p>
<p>To know the details of SVCHOST, you can download a small and free utility from Sysinternal called the Process Explorer. <a href="http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/ProcessExplorer.zip" target="_blank">Download and run Process Explorer here</a>.</p>
<p>You will see the Peocess Explorer window like one below:</p>
<blockquote></blockquote>
<p><a href="http://www.troublefixers.com/wp-content/uploads/images/HowToKnowSVCHOSTTaskDetails_E374/sysinternalprocessexplorere.jpg"><img title="sysinternal-process explorere" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px" height="318" alt="sysinternal-process explorere" src="http://www.troublefixers.com/wp-content/uploads/images/HowToKnowSVCHOSTTaskDetails_E374/sysinternalprocessexplorere_thumb.jpg" width="379" border="0" /></a> </p>
<blockquote></blockquote>
<p>Click on <strong>View &gt; Select Colunms</strong></p>
<blockquote></blockquote>
<p><a href="http://www.troublefixers.com/wp-content/uploads/images/HowToKnowSVCHOSTTaskDetails_E374/selectcolounms.jpg"><img title="select-colounms" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px" height="373" alt="select-colounms" src="http://www.troublefixers.com/wp-content/uploads/images/HowToKnowSVCHOSTTaskDetails_E374/selectcolounms_thumb.jpg" width="379" border="0" /></a> </p>
<blockquote></blockquote>
<p>Check the <strong>Command Line</strong> Option and press Ok.</p>
<blockquote></blockquote>
<p><a href="http://www.troublefixers.com/wp-content/uploads/images/HowToKnowSVCHOSTTaskDetails_E374/selectcommandlineoptioins.jpg"><img title="select-command-line-optioins" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px" height="496" alt="select-command-line-optioins" src="http://www.troublefixers.com/wp-content/uploads/images/HowToKnowSVCHOSTTaskDetails_E374/selectcommandlineoptioins_thumb.jpg" width="379" border="0" /></a> </p>
<blockquote></blockquote>
<p>After this you can see the details of the Applications running using SVCHOST as seen in the snapshot below (click to enlarge).</p>
<blockquote></blockquote>
<p><a href="http://www.troublefixers.com/wp-content/uploads/images/HowToKnowSVCHOSTTaskDetails_E374/svchostprocesses.jpg"><img title="svchost-processes" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px" height="149" alt="svchost-processes" src="http://www.troublefixers.com/wp-content/uploads/images/HowToKnowSVCHOSTTaskDetails_E374/svchostprocesses_thumb.jpg" width="379" border="0" /></a></p>
<blockquote></blockquote>
<p>The command line Column also shows the location of the file which is being executed. Thus you know what applications are actually running and which is eating up all the CPU usage. Once you know that, you can un-install or disable the culprit application from startup using this article to <a href="http://www.troublefixers.com/computer-is-slow-at-start-up-takes-too-long-to-boot-up/" target="_blank">Remove Windows Startup Applications</a>.</p>
