This is part 5 of our series of Ask Troublefixers , we have picked below problems submitted by our readers via email and answered them.

Trouble 1 :

I have faced a problem in window xp. When i click on changed window firewall setting it show "Window could not start windows firewall / internet connection sharing (ICS) service”

- Rahul

Fix:

Many of the Windows features make use of the services which keep running in background or some of the services which are started or stopped by certain softwares as needed. The problem you are facing is because of one such stopped service. You can restart the service that is causing the problem by following our article which talks about Restarting Windows Service.

Trouble 2 :

While shutting down the computer “END NOW” option is showing for some application always when i try to shutdown. – Ajay

Fix:

“End Process Now” dialogue box appears many times when shutting down windows. It is a very common problem. Try to see what applications cause this problem, you can manually close that software before shutting down, that will make it fast. Alternatively, you can use this tutorial on Registry Hack To Shutdown Computer Quickly by altering the wait time for applications.

Trouble 3 :

When I installed Windows XP on a pc with pentium4 processor and then I upgrade that
pc with Intel Dual Core processor later. Hard disk is not booting Windows and Restarting continuously. Can I use that windows without reinstalling? – Adnan

Fix:

When you make hardware level changes to your computer by adding new hardware having considerably different or upgraded drivers, the windows may not boot. This is because the Windows XP installed on your hard disk is using old device drivers for motherboard chipset, memory controllers etc. To solve this problem, I would advice you to boot the Windows in “Safe Mode” by pressing F8 during windows is trying to boot. Once you boot in safe mode, un-install the old hardware drivers and install the new hardware drivers. See this article to know the new hardware details. After driver update try to boot Windows normally. If you still find it re-staring, I would recommend to take your data backup and install a fresh copy of Windows XP.

Trouble 4 :

How to find if any computer is infected with Virus. What are all the ways to find the virus in any computer system. – Khan

Fix:

The most common way is to observe something suspicions happening with computer applications or files or Internet connection, but this is not advisable, because there are many Trojans and Viruses which will silently steal your data and private information. See our article to Protect Computer From Virus and Trojans. Also if you think that your computer is already infected, then use these free tools to scan and remove viruses. First is Free Kasper Virus Removal Tool and the second one is Free Norton Virus Scan.

Trouble 5 :

My computer has Windows XP Service Pack 2. My problem is that USB devices like pen-drive and ,phone are not detected, but my USB mouse working fine. – R.Abdul

Fix:

The problem of Pen-Drives not working on computer is a typical case of missing or disabled USB Mass Storage Device drivers. To solve Pen Drive not detected problem, see our article on Pen Drive Not working also see this article if your are facing USB drive problem with Windows Vista.

Hope you find these solutions useful. You can submit your problems to us at Our Submit Problem Page.

Trouble:

You may have faced a problem when you insert your pen drive and it gets detected very easily but it doesn’t show up as a drive icon in My Computer. The computer detects the pen drive but data on pen drive is not visible as the pen drive is not visible in My Computer (Explorer).

This problem occurs mainly when windows XP fails to allocate a drive letter to your portable drive(pen drive). It occurs mostly with new pen drives connected to your computer for the first time. If you face such problem then it may not be the pen drive’s fault, rather it may be windows trouble.

Fix:

You can fix this issue by following some simple steps given below.

1. Click Start, click Run, type compmgmt.msc, and then click OK.

2. In the console tree, click Disk Management. The Disk Management window will appear.

3. On this disk management window, you can see some drives including the portable drive. Right click on your portable drive and click change drive letter and paths.

4. Now a assign a new drive letter which is not being used by any of your drives in My Computer.

5. After assigning the new drive letter your portable drive will show up in my computer with other drives

We hope the above solution will help to fix this trouble.
