Copy Data From Virus Infected Pen Drive

Pen drives these days has become some major mediums behind spreading viruses which cause various troubles on your computer. Many of friends often got their pen drives infected by virus and they have crucial data on their virus infected pen drive.

Now the question arises here is how can you back up data from a virus infected pen drive. If you insert you pen drive on your computer it may infect your computer also. Some times you may not be able to open the virus infected pen drive in that case it becomes more difficult as the pen drive does not open on double click.

Today we will tell you how can you back up data from your virus infected pen drive. Let’s discuss two most simple methods to backup data from your virus infected pen drive.

These are the two methods which you can use to back up data from pen drive.

Note: Before backing up data form your virus infected pen drive make sure to disable autorun before connecting your pen drive to your computer and don’t double click on the pen drive icon in my computer to open it.

Method 1: Simple Windows Procedure To Backup Data From Pen Drive

1. Right click on the Removable pen drive in My Computer

2. Select Properties >Tools.

3. Click the Back Up >> Choose the file to back up from your removable pen drive

4. Choose the Destination path where you want to store the back up files.

Method 2: Backup Using Free Commander ( Alternative Windows Explorer )

1. Download Free Commander from here and install it.

2. Launch Free Commander and click on your removable pen drive letter to explore it contents

3. Now right click and copy your crucial files from your virus infected pen drive before formatting it.

Note: You can also see the hidden virus files which you may not be able to see in windows explorer, so you can even delete those virus files on your pen drive to make your pen drive free from viruses.

The most common source of virus infection for computers these days is Pen-Drives. This has become a big annoyance, we have received lots of emails from our readers regarding infected pen-drives ruining their computers.

We have written a series of articles about the same:

In continuation to the useful topics covered above, we are going to tell you about another useful utility called Ninja-Pendisk.

You simply run it on your computer and will monitor every pen drive you plug in, and remove any potential viruses.

Fix:

You can simply Download Ninja Pendisk and run it, it will sit on your system tray, and monitor any pen-drive which u connect to your computer. It works for Windows XP and Windows Vista both.

Also you can set it to start at start-up, so that you need not run it every time you start windows, it will come automatically.

How to protect your computer from virus in pen drives

We have received lot of problems where computers got infected easily by the viruses in the pen drives, pen drives have become one of the most easiest carriers of various types of viruses these days.

We will tell you how pen drives normally infect your computer systems and how can you open pen drive safely and back up your important data.

How a virus in your pen drive infects?

Most of the active viruses infect your windows system as soon as you double click on the Pen Drive icon in your my computer. As virus always creates a autorun.inf file which is a system ,hidden and a read only file on your pen drive. It point to the main virus file which is also located on the pen drive. When user double clicks on the pen drive files pointed by the autorun.inf got executed which copies the virus files on your system.

The image below shows the Autorun file entries in some special characters when you right click on the drive.

Let’s see how can you protect yourself by following certain practices.

Fix:

Let’s discuss these practices one by one:

1. Disable Autorun on Your Pen Drive:

Open to Start >> Run and type “gpedit.msc” (without quotes) and press enter. This will open Group policy editor.
Browse to Administrative templates >> System >> double click on Turn off Autoplay click on Enabled and Under Settings >> Select All Drives in the drop down and click OK (as shown in the image below)

2. Scan Your Pen Drive:

Whenever you insert your pen drive / portable drive into USB port on your system make sure to run a virus scan with your anti virus before opening your pen drive contents in windows explorer.

3. Use FreeCommander:

FreeCommander is again a file explorer like windows explorer, so you just need to download it by clicking here and install it.

After installing open your pen drive through FreeCommander (as shown in the image below)

Check if there are some additional files like autorun.inf , Funny UST Scandal.avi.exe ,Ravmon.exe ,New Folder.exe etc or any other file which you have not copied or created, delete all these suspicious files on your pen drive.

4. Use your virus infected pen drive: You can also use your virus infected pen drives to copy your important data in worst circumstances.

How to backup your important data when your pen drive is infected with a virus

a. Insert your pen drive into the usb port, if it detects your drive you will see it in my computer.

b. Now don’t double click on your drive, rather open the pen drive contents by typing the drive letter.

For Example: type g: and press enter if your pen drive is shown as new g drive under my computer.

c. Copy your important files from your pen drive close the window and format your pen drive after then.
