I found out that its not me alone, there are many people facing similar problem. This may happen when the site you are trying to open is up and running and opens in other web browsers like Firefox, IE, Opera etc.

I have sometimes restarted my DSL router assuming that its my bad Internet connection causing this problem, I also checked the DNS settings, but they seemed fine.

This problem is because of a setting of Google Chrome called the DNS-Pre-fetching which will fetch the IP addresses of all the links on your current webpage so that when you click any of these links, it can save time on DNS resolution. In some rare instances, pre-fetching of DNS may fail, which cause this DNS error.

To fix this problem, you simply need to turn off this setting by following these 2 simple steps.

1. Click on the settings at the top right corner of the Google Chrome browser and click option.

2. Click on the “Under the Hood” and uncheck the option which says “Use DNS pre-fetching to improve page load performance”, press close button.

It was simple, wasn’t it ? After turning this feature off, your page load time will increase very slightly but it will not give you DNS errors if the site you are opening is up and running.

Trouble:

We have received many problems in which some sites are not reachable on bsnl dataone or mtnl broadband connection. I myself faced such problem on my own connection. It may has happened with you sometime, when you are not able to access some of the web sites on the other hand all other webs sites are opening properly.

Most common reason for this is wrong dns server entries in your LAN connection properties, or sometimes the DNS server entries might be correct but due to certain errors, the DNS servers used by your connection are not able to locate the web-pages that are not visible to you.

Let’s see how can we fix this issue.

Fix:

In order to solve the problem you need to try alternative DNS servers like OpenDNS , AT&T dns servers or Spectranet dns servers etc.

These are some dns servers sets which you can try (for every set follows the order: primary dns, secondary dns).

Open DNS servers: 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220

AT&T DNS servers: 4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.2

Spectranet DNS servers: 203.122.63.152, 203.122.63.154

How to change dns servers in network connections?

1. Open Start >> Control Panel >> Network Connections.

2. Find your internet connection in “LAN or High-Speed Internet”

3. Right click on connection and select properties.(see the image below to see what happens next).

4. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (tcp/ipv4) and press Properties button. On this screen change the DNS servers by using any one of the dns server settings specified above (as shown in the image below).

Try all the dns server settings one by one at least one of them will work for you.

If you still you are not able access those sites then check if those sites may be blocked by some firewall program or Internet security program installed on your system.

Updated on 30 Nov 2008:

For windows vista users, who might be finding some difficulty in locating the TCP IP properties as described in step 1 , 2 and 3, here is the way.

1. Goto Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Manage Network Connections as shown below:

2. This will open a network connection window as shown below, now just right click on the network connection that you use and click properties, rest of the procedure is same as for Windows XP as shown in steps above
