Trouble:
Some viruses corrupt the Norton Anti-virus itself sometimes, so much so that the anti-virus stops working, and you can not uninstall Norton Anti-virus.
If you try to Install any other anti-virus program, it will not install and ask you to first un-install the existing norton anti-virus. We have seen this problem ourselves as well as received a mail from one of our readers Susheel saying:
whenever I try to uninstall Norton Anti-virus from the add remove program screen I get a warning pop up that says “fatal error during installation”. It reverses what work it has done and the program is still there. The major annoyance with this program is that whenever I right click on a file or icon, I get a loading task of symantec antivirus saying “please wait while windows configures symantec antivirus” and it begins looking for the source directory, which as I said no longer exists…so I hit cancel and I get an error message reading “error 1706: no valid source could be found for product symatec antivirus.”
Don’t scratch your hair, there is a fix to every trouble
, so there is a simple fix for this problem as well, read on.
Fix:
As we said, the fix is really simple, there is a tool developed by Symentec only that will help remove Norton products in case it gets corrupted due to any reasons.
Its called Norton removal tool, a small exe program (about 650 KB) . Before running this program make sure that you save your product key for installing the anti-virus later. Download the tool from the link at the bottom of this post.
The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton 2008/2007/2006/2005/2004/2003 products and Norton 360 .
Also one more warning from Symantec is: If you use ACT! or WinFAX, back up those databases before you proceed. See this page for detailed instruction on usage of this tool.
