Trouble:
We have received a problem from some of our readers, who are not able to access their USB pen drives and other portable devices.
As according to the readers their system was successfully detecting USB devices, but may be after some kind of virus attack their system now does not detect any type of USB devices.
Let’s see how we correct this problem.
Fix:
In normal cases when you think your system is not detecting pen drives, it could be a case when your computer detects your pen drive but does not show up in my computer.
Method 1:
This could be due to no free drive letter has been assigned to your pen drive, you can refer to this post to know what to do in that case.
Still, if you don’t see your pen drive under device manager or if you see some question mark suddenly on your drive in device manager then there could be problem with your registry also,
Read method 2 given below
Method 2:
If none of your USB devices detect ,this could be due to wrong registry entries. i.e you need to delete UpperFilters and the LowerFilters registry values.
Follow the procedure listed below to correct your registry:
1. Open Start >> Run, and type "regedit" (without double quotes), and click OK.
2. Locate UpperFilters registry value. it resides in the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E980-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
3. Click on Edit menu, and select Delete and click OK.
Note: If you receive an error when you try to delete the registry subkey, you may not have correct permissions to edit the subkey.
4. Locate LowerFilters registry value. It resides in the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
5. Click on Edit menu, and select Delete and click OK.
6. Exit Registry Editor and restart your system.

Awrr doing this has messed up my computer, i plugged in a diffrent phone via usb which the computer detected, but then when i opend the folder to view the files on it it kept throwing error messages at me saying that i needed toinsert disk into drive H: but that was where the phone was, then it let me highlight my files from the usb but wouldnt let me copy them over because suddenly “nothing was plugged into the drive” please please pleasssse help me! i need things to work again! is there any way i can reverse what you said to do from up there^ ?

Anyone getting this message “please insert drive” has probably got a dead eeprom on the datapen, they have limited life spans (only so many read/writes) nothing will fix that.
malfunctioned is sometimes other usb devices stopping the pen working or a USB2 device plugged into an old USB port (1.1).

expand the DISK DRIVE menu item
Right click ‘Apple iPod USB Device’ (or pen drive)
Left click ‘UNINSTALL’
Safely remove hardware to remove the drive (won’t have a drive letter)
Unplug USB connector
Plug back in
Windows should now install the correct driver and assing it a drive letter in Windows Explorer

I have 4 gb pen drive. when I insert pen drive in my computer, light inside pen drive start blinking but my computer shows nothing and do not detect this pen drive. actually when i have inserted my pen drive, pc requests for virus scan. i didnot. i tried to open up a doc file which could not be opened. then suddenly the desktop screen came out and pendrive folders closed. after i removed the pendrive from pc, i tried to replug in. pc detects the hardware and successfuly installs the hard ware but in my computer page it can not detect my pendrive. right clicking also i cannot enter into the pen drive. Pen drive not detected, tried on 3-4 computors. Tried what u mentioned about deleting from registry editor, did not solve my problem. Pendrive still not detected, do I need to replace it?

go to your drive >> right click >> change drive letter ( any you wnat form drag down list except your HDD letters>> yes>> ok.

My 4GB pd cannot be opened to view files. HERE’S SOME HELP :
1.Go to Control Panel.
2.Click on System.
3.Click on Hardware.
4.And it’ll shown ‘Device Manager’ bar.Clink on it.
5.Click on ‘Universal Serial Bus Controllers’ title tree.
6.Left Click On ‘USB Mass Storage Device’.Then Click on ‘Update Driver’.Complete the installment.
P/S: Make sure your Pendrive is Connected to your PC/Laptop before doing this method.

My pendrive has got serious problem, it is not appearing in My Computer or Computer Management. Whenever n wherever in any computer it is connected, it shows an error message (43) saying”one of the usb devices attched to this computer has malfunctioned” I have tried many a methods such as pulling out power cable for 10 min., Registering editing or removing etc. When I try to update it in its properties it shows it’z already updated. It only n only shows an error message. When I lastly used it, I was using it as a bootable pendrive . Suddenly it halted working.. Any Solution to this one, plz let me know….

Also I can’t find it in “Disk_Management” which means your step 1 is not possible.When I tried step 2 I found error while deleting the filters registry values. Sir…I have HP v-165 W flash drive…PC couln’t detect it anymore. I tried using devmgmt.msc but not ably to find any listed mass usb storage device. My 8GB TOSHIBA was working properly.I just stored some data to it to transfer to another system.After data transferring(it was done by some other , I don’t know what happened at that time) I received back the pendrive and when I inserted it to my laptop it was not detected. So I tried in another PC.There also it not detected.Then tried in Ubuntu OS and there also no detection.At last in Windows 7 also I tried.It is not detecting.Was it due to any virus inside or crashed?As it is not at all detecting , is there any possibility to recover its data?
