Trouble:
In the past we had received so many problems from the readers who have a problem in copying files on their USB portable devices like pen drives, memory card and iPod etc.
According to the mails we had received about this problem, people have seen the following errors when their thumbs drives, memory card etc becomes write protected.
- Cannot copy files and folders, drive is write protected
- Cannot format the drive, drive is write protected
- The disk is write protected
- Remove write protection or use another disk
- Media is write protected
Some times people say that suddenly their drive become write protected and they are not able to delete any files and folder on the drive and also not able to copy new files and folder to USB portable drive.
Let’s see how can you remove write protection on your portable devices like pen drives, memory cards, iPod and other USB mass storage devices.
Fix:
Write Protection on any portable USB Device can be applied by the physical lock provided on the card adjuster or some times provided on the pen drives, so make sure to make your drive not write protected by moving the lock in right direction.
But even after moving the physical lock for write protection the problem can happen due to some virus action. This happens when some virus or script which applies the registry hack to make any drive write protect when connected to the computer, In that case follow the procedure below to remove write protection from your pen drive.
1. Open Start Menu >> Run, type regedit and press Enter, this will open the registry editor.
2. Navigate to the following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies
Note: If the registry key StorageDevicePolicies key does not exist, you will need to create it
Download this batch file called add.bat from here, and double click after download the key will be automatically added to registry.
3. Double click the key WriteProtect in the right pane and set the value to 0 in the Value Data Box and press OK button
4. Exit Registry, restart your computer and then again re-connect your USB pen drive on your computer. That is it, done.
In case you still find an issue, please leave a comment below.

After a lot of user comments telling that the above method does not work for them, we tell you another method which you can follow to solve the “Pen Drive is Write Protected” problem.
If the above method does not work for you, follow the below steps:
1. Copy all the important data from this drive to your computer because this method will format the drive and erase all the data on the pen drive.
2. Now download the Apacer Formatting Utility, Unzip this utility to a folder on your hard disk, preferably on a folder on desktop screen for easy access (Do Not Try To Save it on pen drive). Keep your pen drive plugged in, and double click on the Start.bat file in the folder where you unzipped the above utility. This will start formatting your pen drive, wait till the formatting completes and the LED on your pen drive stops blinking. Remove your pen drive after than and plug it in again.
The above two steps will solve the problem. If you still face the problem, follow the below steps:
1. Goto Start > Run, type cmd and press enter, this will open command prompt.
2. Type the following command on the command prompt replacing X with the drive letter of your pen drive.
CHKDSK X: /F
The above two methods will help you fix the problem.
Note: For all those who are out of luck in fixing the problem with their portable drives, I would suggest you to get your drives checked or replaced by the manufacturer to fix it for you

I have done this procedure too and it has had no effect. I also modified the other control sets ie Control Set 1 Control Set 2 etc so that all backups were modified using the same criteria. Still not working.
I was able to add files for a few seconds at one point (before) editing the registry) and then it stopped. In fact this worked effortlessly on the first computer I plugged it in to, but not on the second computer. I figured it was computer specific and a windows bug or something.

Hi, I was having this problem with an 8GB SDHC card, the tab was in the UNLOCK position, but it never sat quite right in the card reader (when fully inserted it was at a bit of an angle), and today it decided to give me WRITE-PROTECT errors when trying to delete some files.
So the options were either buying a new card reader or cracking open this one for a ‘mechanical’ fix.
Luckily I found your page here. It made sense that there would be a way to disable the lock/unlock check in RegEdit.
So your method worked for me, using my SDHCcard, card reader with a bad write-protection detection switch, and WinXP SP2.
Just thought I’d add this comment after seeing so many comments on it not working out for them.

I think this needs a very strong anti virus or a program made for this kind of virus that can find it and destroy it because I see the files but I cant delete them and my anti virus cant do anything to it.

I tried your solution and restarted my PC to load the changes. But still the problem is not solved. It still says that “Access is Denied.” when i create a file. Is there any Registry Cache or System Cache which i am missing to delete?
I even tried re-installing the USB Driver and removed
INFCACHE.1 from C:\WINDOWS\inf folder. usbstor.pnf file is loading properly and is having current date as last modified date.
Previously it worked by deleting usbstor.inf.diabled and usbstor.pnf.disabled from windows/inf folder. I copied latest usbstor.inf file from c:\i386

I tried your solution and it does not work.
My iPOD classic 80 gb can go to disk mode but iTunes can not restore it. It seems ok when restoring but iPOD does not come back after iTunes finishes the restore proceedure. The disk start and start and start but not run with the Apple logo stuck on the screen.
And HP Format Tool only shows dvice media write-protected.
Windows does not see the hard drive.
May be you have a another solution.

You are the MAN. You actually help me to fix my issue with IPOD. Damn I was pissed off for last 1 month. Everytime I had tried to synchronized my IPOD to my system Itune it failed with write protection with error message 1429.
I looked around to fix the issue on MAC forum but all the solution provided there was of no use.
Then I though the error message is all about my IPOD is stopping me from writing anything on the device and hence I reached for how to remove write protection from IPOD and I have found your link.
I just run your BAT file and then edit the DWORD value as per your instruction. Then I re-connected my IPOD and it get re-formated without any hitch.

I have a similar problem with a transcend 2GB pendrive which suddenly has become in accessible just as the discussion in here goes.I tried everything you said and on the internet.
I even downloaded the format utility from transcendusa.com neither ur suggested apache format utility is detecting the drive..though windows does. Moreover the drive can be formatted in safemode so the pendrive is definitely undamaged right… and I have changed the registry values aswell.
Please help me reincarnate my pendrive by suggesting a working solution. Is there any antivirus which can remove the virus from the pendrive?

i brought a 2GB MicroSD card with its adaptor, when i inserted the card into the phone and tried to open the files in it, it said “Error, Try Again”. so i put it in the adaptor and inserted into my digital camera and formatted it. after that it was taking pictures but after i’d imported the pictures from the memory card and i tried deleting them off it it said “Memory card write-protected, Remove write-protection or use another disk”. so its letting me take pictures but it won’t open in my phone and it won’t let me transfer any wallpapers, music or ring tones to itself! help me what shall i do! reply quickly please!

insert ur pendrive, if u have any MAC operating system,just insert into DVD drive then restart,then
-press f8 then
-type ” -v -voodoo”
-then black screen ll go for some times
-click to continue
– in the next window click UTILITY from menu bar then click on disk utility
-then choose ur pendrive in explorer left side
-then click on erase
-format in “journeld-extended”
-again format in FAT
be sure u have put legacy usb:”disabled”.
MAC ll change file allocation table.now come into windows check ur pendrive.

There is a write-protection tab on the sd card HOLDER. Every time you insert this into your PC or card holder, this tab slides to the write protect position. Either keep resetting, inserting & reinserting until it doesn’t slide or tape it down.

I’m facing this problem, the strange thing is, i can copy some files but then let’s say after 4% of the copying job, it stops and says about the write protection issue!

5)PLEASE DONT FORGET TO RUN BOOT SCAN

i am having problem with my pen drive. when i open its properties it shows that the free space and used space is zero.and when i click on open it shows that you should format ur pen drive.when i i start formatting it shows that tyour pen drive is write protected
i repaired a 8GB transcend JFV10 pen drive as follows:
1.)i tried the registry fix and set write protection to 0 but it didn’t work
2.)i tried low level formatting,it did not detect the pen drive
3.)so i downloaded the jet flash online recovery tool from http://transcendusa.com and ran it,i set it to remove all the data,surprisingly the first time it didn’t work,i ran it again
,now i tried to open the pen drive n it showed that i had to format it,when i tried formatting it showed disk is write protected
4.)so now after applying the registry fix i restarted the pc n tried to format it…lo n behold it completed successfully
5.)i don’t know whether it works for other brands
specs:
operating system:windows 7
pen drive:transcend jfv10 8GB
file format:fat32
formatted capacity:7.46GB

If you are not sure whether the bat file is working for you or not, please use the manual method which involved opening regedit and adding the key.

the file is supposed to add a registry entry. If its not working on your PC, then plz follow the manual instructions in this article, it does the same thing as the add.bat file.

I am using Nokia N72 (Memory Card: 1GB MMC). I am using USB card reader to transfer any file to/from MMC (Windows Platform: Windows XP). But one day some problem occurred, it started showing error message that the memory card is write protected. I checked in my mobile, whether any password protection was made. But there was no such password protection. I tried to format it from PC, again it failed. Then I tried to format it with mobile itself, which worked. But still I am not able to copy to/from MMC and getting message that “Cannot copy (file name): The disk is write-protected. Remove the write-protection or use another disk.”

I know this problem is also occurring these days without this switch but not to worry. Just download this helpful software from here(http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/HDD-Low-Level-Format-Tool.shtml) and run it to execute a “low-level format” on the drive. This software is quite handy and may take few attempts to actually remove the error.

1. Run diskmgmt.msc in Run.
2. In the disk management window, select the pen drive, right click on it and click on Format.
3. Now choose the File System and Allocation Unit Size and do not check the boxes below.
Click OK and the drive will be reusable after this.

1. Open Registry Editor by typing regedit in Run dialog.

5. Modify this key and give it a value 1.
6. Click OK, and remember to restart the PC.
Now no more data can be transferred to the drive but to start using the drive again just give the “WriteProtect” key a value of 0 instead of 1 and restart the PC.

YOU SHOULD TRY TO SAFE REMOVE YOUR PEN DRIVE/HARD DRIVE FROM YOUR PC ALWAYS! Whatever might be your hurry, pls do not force pull out the drive. On many occasions nothing will happen. But, once in 20 or 30 occasion you will find that your drive gets corrupt or ‘gets’ write protected after you have simply pulled out your pen drive out of the PC without going for safety removal. HOW TO REMOVE WRITE PROTECTION IN MEMOY CARD
My Lgear 4gb usb disk write protected by itself, tried windows registry fix and lformat utility… none of them worked. However, with a despair try, I got it fixed by the following steps:
1. pluged in the usb disk to a mp4 player (my model: ainol v8000hdy)
2. deleted several files successfully in the mp4 file explorer (no write protected message pop up)
3. unpluged the usb drive from mp4 player, and pluged it into my pc (windows xp sp3)
4. copyed and deleted a test file successfully no more write protection
5. run chkdsk /f and fixed the corrupt file system, the usb drive was back to life since then.
That’s it. Good luck!

I spent 12 hours looking for a solution before finding this page, and I’d just like to say thanks.
My 8GB Maxell Xtractor USB Stick had become “Write Protected”, after I’d tried to batch-encode some media files contained on it. It wasn’t physically damaged, there’s no copy protect switch on the stick… Windows XP Pro was recognizing it as a removable drive, but was unable to format due to it being allegedly “write protected.” It still displayed the correct drive size, albeit as a RAW format and not FAT32.
I tried all kinds of different formatting utilities. I tried booting in Safe Mode with DOS Commands and running a format; it still appeared to be copy protected. Nothing worked…
So, I added the Registry entry as above, then amended the value to zero – still no luck.
Out of frustration, I decided to try the JetFlash Online Recovery tool – even though my stick was manufactured by Maxell…

Unbelievably, it worked. I don’t know how, but it worked. 🙂
If anybody still has the same problem, I’d urge you try the JetFlash Online Recovery tool. Just make sure you unplug any other external drives with the same storage capacity as your USB stick, because it identifies the USB stick by disk size.

In windows7 place the cusrsor on the drive you want to remove the write protection. Just right click and after that click on the property than a dialogue box will appear and youneed to click on security option. Place the cursor on users and click on edit option. Again one dialogue box appears and you just need to mark right against full control, modify and write but do remember only do those things under allow option colomns…….It really works guys……….. Even you can use this option for memory cards.

I tried the guides above and I know that I follow it well but their nothing happening..I’m using window 7 OS..I saw ‘storage’ and not ‘storagedevicepolicies’ and in ‘storage’ it have ‘writeprotect’ and I’ve change the value to 0, but still it doesnt work. I’m waiting for your reply. thanks

Instead I get this error message with this in part of the message – drive cannot be written because it is write protected. – tried through on line recovery tool of the manufacturer;
– regedit by keeping the “write protect” value as “0”
But could not succeed in emoving the write protection.

Bill… I was using a Lexor 4GB drive transferring files from one PC to another ..I had no problems with multiple transfers then suddenly with 4 files left on my last transfer I got the Write Protect notice..I have tryed everything …Now I downloaded the HARD DISK LOW LEVEL FORMAT TOOL …What happened was it got rid of 3 of the 4 write protected files and left one still on the drive…Thats it….I wonder if there are any other solutions ?? Same happened on my USB Harddisk (JMB352 RAID-1 USB Device). None of the solutions worked but I removed HDD driver from Device Manager and then restart the machine solved the issue.

hello friends, i have a disk2go pendrive which is telling me that it is write protected. I initially had about 3Gb of files on it but they were only readable. I couldn’t delete or copy files to the pen drive either so i tried to format it. But windows tells me that, it is write protected and that i should use a different disk. I have tried various utilities but still wont work. Can anyone help me out. I would be very grateful and God would really bless whoever is willing to help.

Eject the Pen drive and put it back 6 times continuously or throw in a very force.This is to erase the current data.And THE Next time when you put it back windows will ask for format. It Will Surely fix the problem.I have tried.

Allright, tried everything available in here and everywhere. It not working, but I find a simple step to at least ‘save’ the data
1. Eject the troublesome USB (right click, eject. Not safely remove)
2. Unplug it, and plug it again.
3. Try to copy/delete anything. If failed, try step 1-2 again. (I tried 7 times to succeed)
It not entirely fix the disk, but it ‘trick’ the disk protector, allow me to copy and delete file below 150 MB (disk protection still interrupt, thought)

When i placed my memory card in my cell it asked password so i called up my friend and asked him the password. But i replyied that he has forgotten the password. Hey friends its quite easy to remove write protected follow the steps mentioned below:
1: Download “mformat.exe from 4shared .com which is free of cost
2: Plug ur pendrive
3: Run m.format.exe
4: Click on format
5: Click on full format
6: Start
7: After formatting replug ur pendrive
8: Open pen drive
9: Delete mformat icon
10: Close the window nd format the pendrive

tried all methods, tried even more methods than this text offers, and couldnt do it! writing protection remained.. then i just inserted pendrive in another computer, and windows asked me to format it, so i did, and now i have working usb flash pendrive again!!! 😀
